    • You’re very welcome! 🙂

    • It’s not really complex, I just broke it down to simplify it and remove any doubt that may arise, and to anticipate potential questions that may arise during the procedure. It’s actually only four steps:

      Click the menu icon.

Click the “Customize” button. That will open the “Customize” box.

Left click on and drag the “Screenshots” icon into the middle of the Customize box from the top of the Firefox screen. Release the left click when you’re done dragging the icon.

Click on the “Exit Customize” button at the bottom of the Customize box, and you’re done. 🙂

    • … That last link has a “message from Google” “Ad Closed By Google”. This is somewhat confusing because I don’t know what that means… 🙂

That simply means that Google may have detected the ad was not following Google’s guidelines for how an ad should perform on a page. It can also mean that Google has received many complaints about the ad or its placement, so they have decided to remove it for the time being.

    • I removed Firefox Screenshots icon by clicking Customize on the Firefox menu…

@walker-Just how to do that you may ask? Here’s another way besides the one in your post above this one:

At the top of the Firefox window, over on the right side immediately to the right of the “Search” box, there’s an icon that looks like three heavy black lines stacked on top of each other.

Click that icon once and you’ll see a new “box” open up. All the way at the bottom of that box is the word “Customize” with a plus (+) symbol next to it. Click on that word, and it will turn green and the rest of the Firefox screen will look a little different as well.

Now, with your LEFT mouse button, click on top of the Screenshots icon (the one with the scissors and bluish color) and hold that click. In other words, press the left mouse button down and don’t let go. Your mouse pointer will not look like an arrow, it will look like a hand that has grasped an object instead.

While still pressing the left mouse button, move the mouse and icon (you’re now “dragging” this icon) over the box that opened up when you clicked the “Customize”  button

When you have the mouse and your dragged icon in the middle of the other icons in the middle of that box, release the left mouse button. The “Screenshots” icon should now be in that box and NOT on the top of the Firefox window where it was.

Click on the green button that says “Exit Customize” at the bottom of the box, and you’re done! 🙂

    • (This post is meant as a reply to post #141663 of Oct 29th, 2017 at 10:19 am. My earlier reply wound up in the wrong place on this thread for some reason, even though I clicked on the reply link in post 141663.)

… So, I’ll just DL KB3020369, put it in the CheckSUR folder (I already have it, don’t worry)…

      Zemplin-

Please make sure you put the downloaded file in the packages sub-folder of the CheckSUR folder. If that sub-folder (packages) doesn’t exist, you can create it, as @mrbrian mentioned.

That should hopefully enable the DISM command to produce the results @mrbrian is expecting from it when you run it.

      c:\windows\CheckSUR\packages

I have added the bolding above for emphasis only.

      I hope this helps!

      walker-

As I write this reply, the site is being VERY VERY slow. It took me a full three clock minutes to get logged in from the time I clicked the login button after typing in my info until the page began loading with the indications that I had successfully logged in. Then, it took the site a full four minutes on the clock to load this page after I clicked the “Reply” link above your last reply to me.

In a nutshell, the site is extremely slow, possibly bordering on going down based upon my experiences right now. By the way, I have a very decent, speedy broadband connection, so it’s not my connection that’s down, is this site that acting funny again.

With the above in mind, all I can say is to be VERY patient when coming to this site. Also, before deleting your bookmarks that refer to this site, go through them, and please make sure NOT to delete any bookmarks that refer to the following URL (web page address), as that’s the address for this individual topic:

      https://askwoody.com/forums/topic/error-code-80070308-prevents-kb4034664-update-install

Please review the text above very carefully to ensure you keep the bookmark of this page.

In my last reply to you, which you quoted above, please notice that I made it so the individual post I wanted you to look at is highlighted in brown. That means you can click directly on it and you’ll be taken directly to the post to be able to read it. If you haven’t done so yet, please do so when you finish reading this post.

For now, looks like we’ll all need a good dose of patience and some extra time on our hands when coming here for good advice. Now, let’s see how long it takes the site to acknowledge successful submission of this reply.

    • To answer your other question from your post above “Will KB3177467 be reversible via a W7 restore point, on the off chance anything would get messed up during the installation process or after?” the answer is that the process of installing the update will create a restore point of it’s own automatically. After you double click on the installation package you downloaded, the window that comes up will show the progress the installer makes, including the creation of a restore point.

At least that’s what has always happened with me when I’ve had to do stand-alone installations of Windows updates. So, you should be all set.

      walker-

Please see post number 140902 below to see @MrBrian’s latest instructions. It was posted Oct. 26th at 7:23 pm Eastern Time.

To make it a little easier to get back here to this thread, you might wish to bookmark this thread in your favorite browser. That way, one click (and some occasional patience after that click) and you’re here! If you’re not too sure just how to do it, just ask and either I or someone else will surely be able to help you with that.

In addition, due to the ongoing issues accessing email, it might be a good idea to check in here on a regular basis (see the prior paragraph) rather than waiting for emails to catch up to you. That way you may very well get resolution of your questions sooner rather than later. I sincerely hope this tidbit helps! 🙂 🙂

    • Your experience above with the NVIDIA driver is a great reminder for all of those thinking about taking the plunge into FCU 1709 to first make sure you have ALL the latest drivers for your hardware from the hardware manufacturers’ sites BEFORE proceeding with the upgrade to 1709. That way, if you have device issues after the upgrade, you’ll be ready with the latest driver to hopefully remedy any problems that crop up with any devices’ functionality.

    • Woody wrote: “… I wonder if the Win10 FCU ransomware blocker “Controlled folder access” effectively blocks Bad Rabbit?”

Personally, I think this would be a great “acid test” of sorts for that feature!! However, it would probably get caught by the real time protection feature of Windows Defender and its’ definition database before activating the folder access feature, since there are reports of Defender successfully catching the rabbit!

    • D’OH!! Forgot about the ownership aspect!!  :-[  :-[  Nice catch!!

      walker,

With regards to your post #140700 (directly above this reply), you don’t need OneNote at all. The program MrBrian is talking about, Notepad, is a text editor and viewer that’s been built-in to Windows for a great number of years now, so every edition has it. If you simply double click on a text file, it should open up in Notepad by default with no additional effort needed on your part.  🙂  🙂

    • …Remember that creating files on your system that nothing can access due to permission denial could cause unexpected issues – such as error messages when making backups – in the future. There probably won’t be any real problems, but just remember that you’ve created these files on purpose if you see things go wrong in the future. … -Noel

However, having removed ALL permissions from the files, if you do have issues either upon reboot or in the future sometime and wish to delete the files because the threat may have loooong since passed, wouldn’t you be unable to do so because of having removed even the system level permissions?

Just something to think about before proceeding with the permission change to the files.

      @walker-

No, this topic is still open and probably won’t be closed anytime soon. 🙂  @MrBrian will probably be here in the next couple of hours to continue helping you out. Please be patient.

To help him out a bit, and to answer your question, from what I can tell of what he has said in a couple of previous posts, please leave KB4038777 hidden for now. It does still have an issue or two that might affect you, but that’s another thing to tackle later.

The next item @MrBrian would like you to do (based on what he has said in post #140449 just above this area of this thread) is to provide one of your logs to him that Windows has created during all of the troubleshooting you’ve been doing. He will provide you with instructions on just how to get it to him later this evening after he signs on to this site.

Wishing you all the best in your endeavors!

    • in reply to: Error Code 80070308 prevents KB4034664 update install #140262

      Anonymous-

The initial issue causing the error code has been solved, and the initial poster (walker) and the respondent (MrBrian) have slowly moved on to other items that may again trigger the same error code.

They are in the process of trying to avoid another occurrence of the code by examining various files for clues to what may have caused the problem in the first place.

If you are experiencing the same symptoms or error code with Windows update not wanting to install an update, you may wish to try the solution used in the posts above. However, just because it worked for this situation doesn’t mean it will guaranteed work for you, as every situation is different.

A simple google search using terms such as “Windows Update error code 80070308” is a great way to get started if you’re having problems.
