Error Code 80070308 prevents KB4034664 update install

Error code 80070308  is preventing KB4034664 from successfully installing.  After the update has downloaded and “shows” installed, a prompt comes up showing “FAILED”.

Mr.Brian provided instructions for “computer illiterate” users such as I am  in another forum and I will attempt to follow them to the letter.   I am creating this as a “new” subject as advised, and hoping that there are others who have had this problem, and were able to resolve it.

I would suggest to:

1. Open an elevated command prompt.

2. In the elevated command prompt. type this command and then press Enter key:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth

In case you’re wondering why we’re doing this, here is a reference.

3. Try to install KB4034664 again and tell us if it works or not. If not, there are more things we can try.

@Mr.Brian:   I have attempted to begin checking this out, and am hoping that I am listed as an Administrator.   Normally, I do not have an Administrator listed as I am the only user, so I do hope that is not going to be a problem.  I will attempt this maneuver and hope that I am listed as an Administrator.   Will report back as soon as I have information.  Thank you once again for your help – – – –

@Mr. Brian:   I have been trying everything under the sun to even locate the “command prompt”, I spent a lot of time just trying to locate the Accessories.  I did locate it once, and at that time, it only showed my name, so I’m assuming that I am NOT the Administrator, ergo I will be unable to move forward with the solution you have set forth.   I have not been successful in even locating the “Accessories” again.   I cannot ascertain being able to follow the directions without being the Administrator, and now (again) being unable to locate the Accessories file.    My apologies and gratitude for the time you have expended in attempting to provide help to me.    My Win 7 x64  (no Office or other updates) is very simple, however a lot of the “control panel” items have difference names, etc.).

I do not see any method out of my dilemma.    Thank you once again for your advice, I do appreciate your assistance very, very much.     Please accept my deepest gratitude for your help.

@Mr.Brian:    As I was shutting down, I noted that I had added the Command Prompt window to the computer icons, and it only shows my “name”, and it’s dated 2009.    I had this computer custom built in 2014, so I’m not certain as to why this is dated 2009.   It doesn’t matter since I have no way to add becoming an “Administrator” at this late date I’m sure.   As always, thank you once again for your outstanding help…..

@Mr. Brian:  A quick P.S. – – – – –  I found that when I       R clicked that it had an “option” to “Run as Administrator”, however I don’t know if it would be functional or not since it’s so old.    Just thought I would add this since there may be a slight “Ray of Hope” there yet.

@Mr. Brian:  Apologies that it took me a while to get back here.  I had difficulty once I signed in to say a “thank you”, and then the “reply” also seemed to be bogged down.

I read the information you posted, and was able to access the site.    I will try to proceed as the website says, and from that point on, do I return to your original directions as follows:

@Mr.Brian:  Continuing to have problems with the website, however managed to get back here.     I attempted to Use the “Command Prompt” & clicked on Run As Administrator.  A new box opened up asking if I wished to allow MS to make changes to this computer.   At that point I stopped, as it appears that this program is too old to even use.  I noted in the properties that it was only valid from 2009 to 2011, which was long before it was installed on this computer.   It appears that I cannot do “anything” to obtain Administrators rights under these circumstances.   I cannot get past the prompt which is asking permission to allow MS to make changes to this computer.

I never could determine what is wrong with the website that I cannot navigate to the Forums, Blogs, etc.

If there is some “miracle” out there (I know you’ve tried them all), I would be willing to try it, however between this “ancient” “Command Prompt”, and the request to allow MS to change the computer I am “doomed”.   Thank you very, very much for the time and effort you expended to attempt to assist me with this onerous problem.  I appreciate it more than words can ever adequately express.    YOU ARE A “TRUE STAR”.

This is expected behavior. You can allow this. Then you should have an elevated command prompt. Then you can follow steps 2 and 3 in post #132886.

@Mr.Brian:  I hope to have time to get back to this today, and hope that it will “cooperate”.  I’ve been “out of the loop” for such a lengthy period of time that it has created a more serious “insecurity” problem, however I will continue to “try”.

BTW, I had an “okay” from one of our “STARS” a while back, and I think it was for Belarc (?).  If this is reliable (I don’t have the original message), perhaps I can try it was well (?).

There should be no need to stop the Windows Update service.

Belarc probably won’t fix your installation issue.

@Mr. Brian:  I had problems with the vehicle yesterday (and today), so was unable to get back to this, and am hoping that I may be able to do that later.

I think I should (“leaving the updates at”NEVER UPDATE”), do the update thing and see what is now pending in addition to everything else that was already there.

There were comments which never went through to you (frozen “somewhere”), so I don’t know how far I was able to go on Sept. 10th.   Thank you for your recommendations, which I sincerely appreciate as I know you are very knowledgeable.  I am hoping that I will be able to get back to this today if at all possible.   Your help is appreciated more than words can adequately express.

@Mr.Brian:  Have the vehicle problems resolved, and in the interim I did the “check for updates” (with the NEVER CHECK on), and I am only seeing the “new” updates from September.  (none of the “old updates” are listed).

The Important ones as follows:

KB4041083 (Sec. & Qual. Rollup for .NET Framework)

KB 4038777  (Qual. Rollup for Win 7 x64 Based)

and MSRT, and Win Def. Update for the Windows Defender are there as well.

Nothing “new” in Optional, only the “old”  KB2952664 which has been there “forever”.

Therefore it appears that I will wait for the Defcon3 or higher to appear  and hope for the best.

The MS-Defcon status applies to the most recent batch of updates, not the older updates. We could try to install the August update(s) if you want to.

@Mr.Brian:  I finally located this last message from you.  The messages have been “in disarray” because of the problems getting into the website.

I apologize about being unable to try to install the older updates, however I think I noted above that they were not there after I did the last “Check for Updates”.   Only the new ones appeared.   That is the same situation I have presently after checking for updates again.  I don’t understand the reason that the old updates disappeared (from August) but they did.  I don’t understand the reason this occurs  (they are listed in the history as “Failed”).

Thank you so very, very much for the excellent guidance that you have provided.   I presently only have 2 Important updates listed, and am waiting for the Defcon3  hoping that I can get these downloaded and installed without any problems.   I think it would be best to not check for anymore updates, and hope and pray that I can get the remaining 2 Important Updates from September to install. However I have to use the “check for updates” to get them to show up, so that does not appear to be an “option” either.

Once again, thank you for your outstanding information – – – – I only wish I knew the reason that every time I “check for updates” with the “NEVER CHECK FOR UDPATES” on, I only receive the new ones, however it’s possible that the 2 which were from August did not appear because I was unable to get them installed (they show in the “history” as failed). One was for the .Net Framework, and I was not concerned about that one, however the other one was the KB4034664 which I finally gave up on.

The reason the August updates no longer show as applicable is because they have been superseded by the September updates. If you (temporarily) hide the September updates and then check for updates, the August updates should show up. Alternately, we could install the August updates manually by downloading the updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

@Mr.Brian:  Thank you for the reply to my questions about the disappearance of the August updates.   I had no idea that this could be done in that manner.

Now, I do have another question (as usual).    Is it “Important” that I install the August updates prior to updating the Sept. updates (after the MSDefcon 3 is reached)?   If it’s not necessary to do that, I wouldn’t have to go through that “process”.  Insofar as the nightmare of trying to DL & install from the Catalog (which I’ve had abysmal luck).   I’ve not had a successful DL & install from the Catalog since about May 2017.

I’m just searching for the “easiest” way to get the updates for  September DL & installed from the “checking for updates” process.  I’ve had so many problems I’m becoming more and more intimidated by the “updating issues”.   I’ve had no problems with the MSRT or the Windows Defender updates at all.   Thank you once again for the very detailed reply you posted.   Your knowledge, and abilities are nothing short of “AMAZING”.    Very much appreciated, as always.

Is it “Important” that I install the August updates prior to updating the Sept. updates (after the MSDefcon 3 is reached)?

Technically, there is no need to install the August updates first. However, I predict that you will have no luck installing the September updates until you do the procedure in post #132886 and possibly more things that I haven’t mentioned yet.

@Mr. Brian:   I attempted to reply to the Message number you mentioned in your post, however I don’t know where it disappeared to.   I had a difficult time trying to locate that one with all of its many replies back and forth.   I hope I can go back and research it again – – – as I recall you did have some advice, however it was at a time when the messages became inaccessible.

If your advice is to try to follow the “hiding” the Sept. updates (only 2), then that it what I will do, and hope that the August updates will reappear.   Will try to do that ASAP.   Your advice is worth its “weight in gold”.    Thank you once again.    I will report back after I proceed, and hope that it will be successful.

@Mr.Brian:  I have written one message to send to you, and that too has disappeared.  After this topic was moved to the “AskWoody Forum”, it has not been possible (as you mentioned) to access the “new” messages.   I don’t think there is any way to resolve, this issue.

I was attempting to return to the Sept. 10th information to try to find out where we were with the process when everything “went down on Sept. 10th”.   I have tried to list the messages, etc., however it’s been such a long time since we worked on this, I cannot recall which method I tried and it was in the process of “working” when everything “went south”.    I don’t know if this older information can be salvaged.  I have the August critical update (KB 4034664) ready to DL and install, however don’t know which “Command Prompt” process we were in the middle of using when everything was “lost”.

Is this such a “mess” now that there is no way I can “try it once again”.  The fact that the “topic” was somehow moved to the “AskWoody Forum” made it even more “impossible”.

Thank you once again for your help, patience, and “miracles” you caused to occur.   Your expertise, and knowledge are all outstanding, and appreciated more than words can say.  I hope this message goes through.

@Mr.Brian:  I think this is where I lost the missing messages, which is the reason I don’t have the “directions” to get the Administrator Rights  Losing so many messages when I almost had things under control at last (about Sept.10th) caused a  problem from which I have not been able to recover.   Even messages which I had bookmarked have disappeared, showing “You are looking for something that is not here”, or a similar message.

I just “checked for updates” again so I would be “current”.   It now does NOT show either the August or the Sept. Security & Quality Rollups.  I’m Group A, Win 7 x64.  It only shows KB4025341, published July 11, 2017, Security & Quality Rollup, and the current .NET update.  I think the reason for the “old July” update being there is because I had no way to keep up with the “updates” for a period of time.   I installed the CURRENT Windows Defender update just now, so only have these two in the Important Updates.

The optionals only show the PREVIEW  KB4038803 (which I understand we are never supposed to install), and one other one for a new printer, and a “Realtek” something, which I haven’t looked at yet, and the OLD BAD ONE:    KB2952664, showing published 3-15-17.  It’s been sitting in the Optionals a long time. Would you recommend that I try to DL & install the JULY Security & Quality Rollup (IF I CAN)?

Trying to get “back on track” if I can only get the Security & Quality Rollup from July installed, then the others (Aug. & Sept.) should appear sequentially (one at a time)?  Just trying to get around having to try the “Administrator” thing again if it’s not necessary.

@Mr.Brian:  I tried to attach a screen shot of what the “black box” that appears looks like.   It was rejected, and I was directed to remove it.  I have never done anything with a “Command Prompt” previously therefore, of course, I don’t have a clue as to  how I should try to proceed.

I am ashamed to even ask again about this since I was so close at one point in obtaining my objective.   I have noted that about Sept. 28th you provided some directions, which appear to have additional information.    Whatever response you provide I will do my best to follow it to the letter.     I do apologize profusely.   Above all else I sincerely say “thank you” once again to you.

It seems that you did step #1 successfully. Step #2 involves clicking the “black box” window, and then typing these letters into the black box window:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth

and afterwards press the Enter key.

@Mr.Brian:  I’m sorry I missed your response last evening.   It is wonderful to know that I actually did “something right” for a change.    I will do as you have directed.   It seems that I recall in the past that MS asks if they can change things on the computer and you stated “yes, it’s okay to allow that”.   I will proceed as you have indicated and hope that I am recalling that “older message” correctly, and then also how do I proceed after completing this last step as you have directed.

I will forge ahead and hope and pray for the best.  Thank you, once again, for the wonderful help you provide, Mr.Brian.      I cannot think of enough positive adjectives to describe how much your help is gratefully appreciated,   in addition to “Thank you” again.

@Mr.Brian:   I successfully got the Administrator’s Rights (however in a different manner than proscribed).   PROBLEM IS that there was ONE New Important update, dated YESTERDAY, Oct 10th.  It’s KB4041681, a new Monthly Quality Rollup for 7×64 (202.4 MB) for Obtober.     .

Since I can’t “sit here” and not “do something”, I think the only “thing I can do” is to “hide” this OCTOBER update ??????????  If I hide the October update the September update should appear so I can install it – – – right?

I hope and pray that you read this message – – – – The Administrator Command Prompt is still open.   Should I close it when I am finished?   I don’t know what to do.   There is one “Optional”  for .NET as well, dated yesterday too, however I’m not concerned about that one.

PLEASE SENT ME A REPLY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO “ANYTHING” UNTIL I KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO, INCLUDING “COMMAND PROMPT”.    NEED HELP DESPERATELY, PLEASE.

Did you type the command

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth

into the command prompt black box and press Enter?

You may hide the October 2017 monthly rollup if you want to install the September 2017 rollup.

@Mr.Brian:   Yes, I did type the command  “DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth” and hit enter.    Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.    Now do I leave the “Command Prompt” box open as it’s been on the desktop as a shortcut for quite a while??

I will hide the October update, as you advised.    Then can I just close the updates, after I  hide the October one and check later to determine if either the Aug. or Sept one appeared and itstall it?

Can I just leave the shortcut for the Command Prompt on the desktop?  If there are any other problems I will try to get back here.  THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR “SAVING MY SANITY”.    You are the BEST!!!

Running that command that you typed into the command prompt should take maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Yes, please leave the command prompt window open and allow it to complete. I’d like to wait until that command completes until any further actions are done.

@Mr.Brian: I was not at the computer long enough for the process to complete, IMHO.   I am so unfamiliar I did not know what to do.   It’s very possible that the “short-cut” on the desk top already had the “Command Prompt” enabled (from September 10th) as I was “ready” to proceed when everything went “south”.   When I    R. Click on the “short-cut”, it already has the “option” to “Run As Administrator, and that is what I clicked on.

Now I will try the “updates” again, and see whether or not there was enough time for the process to do its job.    I will do my best, and hope I have “good news”.   Thank you so much for providing the information for me to have an opportunity to get the updates back in shape after such a long time of not being updated.     I have a very high regard for your expertise, and knowledge, and many, many others are as grateful as I am

@Mr.Brian:   Quite a few surprises when I checked the “Update History”.   I found that there were 4 updates that failed, and I don’t have the details on them.  This started in late April 2017 with:

KB4014661    (4-29-17 Failure)  (History shows Sec. Update for Win, MS shows this as being a cumulative update for IE  (4-11-17)

KB4019263    (5-28-17 Failure)  (Security Update for Win. Security ONLY)  5-9-17

KB4034664    (9-8-17  Failure)   (Sec /Monthly Quality Rollup Win7x64)  8-8-17

May 2017 .NET  (9-9-17)

I attempted numerous times to get these DL & installed, however was unsuccessful. I think that some of them were listed in the “Catalog”, and that caused me problems previously.

The only ONE that I would like to get for sure is the one which I am listing now.   Other than the MSRT and a .NET Framework one, there is nothing else listed in the Important List.  I could get the MSRT installed now, and that leaves 2 (one of which is from May 2017).

Do you have an opinion about whether or not it would be “safe” to try to install those that I’ve listed that have “FAILED”.

I have not installed the OLD one – – –  KB4025341 because I’m not certain if any of these “failures” will cause problems with this one.   What do you think about this?   This is KB4025341 the one which is showing up in the IMPORTANT updates now and shows that it was published 7-11-17.  It’s 2017-07).

I will not make any moves until I hear from you, and get your perspective.  I am completely baffled on the discrepancy on the following:

KB4014661    (4-29-17 Failure)  (History shows Sec. Update for Win, MS shows this as being a cumulative update for IE  (4-11-17).

Before trying to install updates, please do:

1. Open an elevated command prompt.

2. In the elevated command prompt, type this command:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth

Press Enter key then wait 60 minutes. Please do not close the command prompt black box window until the 60 minutes have elapsed.

@Mr.Brian:  Question:    What is the difference between “Command Prompt” and “Elevated Command Prompt”?   When I go to the icon in my programs, the black box is always there, and I can “right click on it” and it has these options:

Open

      Run as Administrator

Pin to Task Bar

Pin to Start menu

Remove From This List

Properties

As I mentioned, I’m almost certain that I was just about “ready” when the website went down and it’s too long ago to recall what occurred, especially with all of the missing messages.

Now if you can tell me “exactly” what to do, I will do my best – – – I do not know what an “elevated Command Prompt is.   I’m feel badly about that, however if you could explain (to this very computer knowledge deprived individual) I will see if I can understand it.   Thank you once again.

@Mr.Brian:   I cannot tell you how sorry I am!   My computer just went out completely, and I tried everything I could think of to get it started again, and finally gave up.   I don’t know what occurred, however it was very “hot”.    I had to leave it off long enough to determine whether I was going to have to take it in, or if it was just over-burdened by being on for too long.

I was going out of my mind because I had intended to start the process you had delineated.   Is it now too late?   I will wait at least 30 minutes to see if you get this message.  I just cannot begin to convey my apologies for not being able to respond to your message.    I will be here for a while in the morning, before having an appointment in the afternoon.   I am so upset over being unable to access a computer so I could at least send a msg. so you would know it was not intentional.    Thank you for your patience, and help, so VERY, VERY MUCH!

Perhaps your computer is having overheating issues indeed. But if it will run long enough, you could try:

@Mr.Brian:  All right, I will try, and I hope and pray that I don’t mess something up.   However I do not quite understand what it means when it says “confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click “Continue”.   

I will begin to follow the instructions NOW, and so will leave the computer on for the sixty minutes as you have directed.  My fingers are crossed.

@Mr.Brian:  Not wanting to edit the previous message I will try to explain.   There is one icon already in the program list, and now when I click on the “Accessories”, there is another Command Prompt box.   I think this is the problem, as I was able to type the command in previously however now I don’t have that option.  ???  Yes, I know I’m about as dense as it gets.

@Mr.Brian:  I am having a problem because there are TWO of the Command Prompt boxes, and when I try to use one of them, it doesn’t even allow me to type anything.   All I can do is R Click on Run as administrator.   Then MS pops up and wants to verify making changes, and when I click “yes”.   It goes back to the black box.    Don’t I need to delete one of these boxes??

Well, I tried, however here is what I came up with:

Did the  Run as administrator, and it reverted to the black box, and I typed in the DISM/Online/Cleanup-Image/Scanhealth

and it stated Error 87

The online/cleanup-image/scanhealth is unknown

refer to the help by running DISM.exe /?

DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

C:WINDOWS\system32>

That was all I could come up with.   I will try the other method as well, however I don’t know if it will work.   IF THE 2 BLACK BOXES ARE DELETED WHERE CAN I FIND ONE?  I had to go back to the recycle bin to get one out and it only showed it as a shortcut

I still had one of the “old” Command Prompts which I had “restored”, so guess I must delete that one since I’ve copied the information, however I don’t know if I can find the “command prompt” if there is none there (??).

I have searched for a Command Prompt, and cannot locate one, so how can I delete the other Command Prompt too?   How can I find the “actual Command Prompt function” itself?  I know I’m as dense as they come, however I can’t understand how to make this work.   I apologize for wasting your evening – – – – it is already getting late here, however I would stay here another hour to find out how to get this “right”.

@Mr.Brian:   I just now had a chance to check emails and read your message.     No, I did not have the spaces where you indicated they should be.   My vision is not too good, however I did attempt to copy and paste that verbiage into the box, and it would not work, so I typed it in, and of course, did not notice the spaces you indicated.

It is too late for me to try to start anything at the moment, however as soon as I return from the afternoon appointment I will get back to it immediately.   Thank you so much for finding my error!   I am very anxious to try it once again.

@Mr.Brian:   I have returned from a very long appointment, however I will “try” to get the “elevated command prompt” box open again, and this time type in the characters exactly as they were written, with the spaces which are supposed to be in there.

It appears there are a ton of emails about the “Patches”.   I am concentrating on re-trying to get what I need in the “Black Box”.   It may take a while if I get any interruptions, however will try to do it as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for noting that the characters I put into the “Command Prompt” were incorrect because of omitting spaces where they should have been.   I sincerely appreciate your help.

@Mr.Bryan:    SUCCESS!!!!   This process was finished in only 13 minutes, however I left the box open as you directed for 65 minutes to ensure that it was “safe”.

Now what actions may I take to utilize this Administrative authority to look at getting rid of the “old” update that showed up after I hid the September update  ***the KB4025341 appeared from July (pub. 7-11-17)  191.8 MB***.

The September update which we hid was  the Quality Rollup for Win7x64 based.  Is it safe now to update this “old one from July” (KB4025341) because apparently this could possibly be the update that caused all of problems with my update failures (?).

Other than the MSRT there is nothing else remaining which “needs” to be installed in the Important list that I am aware of.   I hope now that the Command Prompt giving me Administrator Rights will allow me to clean up the “updating problems” I’ve had for months.

I hope you will have time to reply to this message.  I’m “late”, however I will try to check the emails as soon as I’ve had something to eat.  I know how busy you are, and sincerely, as always, appreciate your ABSOLUTELY “invaluable” help!

Congratulations :).

Before installing any updates, I’d now like you to type this command in an elevated command prompt:

sfc /scannow

and then press Enter key and wait for about 30 minutes (or until it’s finished).

This command checks if there is corruption in important Windows files, and tries to fix corrupted files.

Please tell me if it reports no issues, or some issues.

Thank you!   I could have never done anything without your amazing help!  I had an unexpected interruption, or I would have checked and seen your message before now, however I will start the process in a few moments.

I have long suspected that there was the possibility of corrupted files, however had no knowledge about how to search for them.     I will start within a few moments and then report back to you about the results (which I probably will not be able to decipher).  Thank you again, so much for “making my day”!!

The process went quickly (8 minutes to be exact, however I ran it a few minutes more), and the result was:

Verification 100% complete.   Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

It is good to know that there are no corrupted files!  I don’t have a lot of programs on the computer and I think it’s an I-3 so it is fairly “fast”.   I don’t use Word, Excel, etc., so that relieves me of a lot of the nightmares that users of those programs have so many problems with.

Thank you very much for being so patient, and considerate in teaching me so much about the computer.   It’s a great feeling to know that I’m not “totally” ignorant!

The next step is to check for updates with Windows Update. If an update named “System Update Readiness Tool” appears, please untick all updates except for that one, and install just that update. It may take 15 minutes or so to install because it’s doing similar things to the DISM command you ran before. Please tell me if you see that update or not; look in both the Important tab and Optional tab.

@Mr.Brian:     PROBLEMS with email were resolved, and it won’t occur again I am happy to report.

So now the only question I have is:

Is it “safe” to DL & Install the “old” update from July 11, 2017, or should I hide that as well, since there may one which is “older”??  This is the Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7x64.  I have noted above that I have already hidden the August and Sept. versions of this one.   These are always listed as “Important”.

Everything at the present time is running without any problems other than the “vulnerabilities” posed by not having the Sec. Monthly Quality Rollups” for those months listed.

Once again, I say “THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING, INVALUABLE ASSISTANCE”.

Mr. Brian:   It did install successfully, however did take about 18 – 20 minutes.   My question now is:   Am I supposed to do the “restart” as we normally do when we install an update?  I would like to know before I close that window if possible.

After the DISM command is done running, you can try to install any of the recent Windows monthly rollups, such as the July Windows monthly rollup. It may or may not install.

Afterwards, we could do the manual steps mentioned in section “How to fix errors that are found in the CheckSUR.log” of https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947821/fix-windows-update-errors-by-using-the-dism-or-system-update-readiness.

Mr.Brian:  I sadly report “utter failure”.   I did take 2 screen shots, however the last time I tried to add a file to a message, it would not accept it.   I have one as a Jpg. and the other one as a Gif.   I will try to add one of them to see if it will be accepted.

The process appeared to be going great…. no problems with the downloading, and then when the installation began, it ran for a while. getting to the “Restore Point”, and then when the installation began, it stopped it.   It has the following text on it:

Failed:    1 Update

Errors found:     Code 80070308; Windows Update Encountered an unknown error.  I will try one again to add a screen shot, however I have not been successful in the past, which is the reason I used 2 types of file (normally I just use the Jpg).  I think I succeeded this time with the Jpg.!

Is there any “hope” for this error?   I see this is the same error number that stopped the other rejections I had.   Would you rather wait until tomorrow to try something else?   This is a very frustrating problem, and I have no clue as to what the problem could be, however I still suspect that this occurred the first time back earlier in the year when I was trying to install a Catalog Update.   When that rejected, I’ve had problems ever since, and I almost wonder if it’s related to having the patch partially downloaded and stopped in mid-stream that did this (however I could be wrong).

Just let me know if you would like to wait until tomorrow to go to the “20th round”  (I have to “try” to laugh at anything right now).

Apologies for being “later than usual” to get to the emails, and subsequently to your text.  WOW!   What a great surprise!  I hope that I can follow these directions without messing anything up.   I will try to be VERY careful.   I was not aware that a person only needed to open the Elevated Command Prompt once, and could continue to use it and hit “enter” each time.   I am learning something “new” once again.

BTW, I erred in my reference to the “time” differences between here and “there”.   I am actually an hour later, not earlier.    I’ll blame that one on “burn-out”.  

I hope that I will be able to get a good screenshot of the command prompt output.     Thank you, Mr.Brian, and a “Hat tip to Bob99 for this tip” as well.

Thank you for the heads up on when you will be back.    I will attach a screen shot of what the command prompt shows.   Sorry to hear that it doesn’t “fix anything”, however  there must be some “purpose” (?).     I am absolutely baffled by the fact that this “error” cannot be “cured” in some manner, but then I don’t understand much about computers.   Thank you for everything you have done to try to help with this impasse.  Your help is sincerely appreciated, as always.

Your last screenshot is helpful because the presence of “PendingRequired” indicates that your system thinks that there are pending Windows update-related actions to do. Please do the following to revert pending Windows update-related actions (you’ll want to print or write these instructions):

1. Start or restart your computer.

2. Press F8 key repeatedly while computer is restarting to get Advanced Boot Options screen.

3. Choose “Repair Your Computer” and press Enter key.

4. Press Next button.

5. Choose an admin account and type its password and then press OK button.

6. Click “Command Prompt”.

7. In that command prompt, type

dism  /image:d:\  /cleanup-image  /revertpendingactions

and then press Enter key and wait until it’s done. Tell me what the command outputs.

8. In that command prompt, type

exit

and then press Enter key.

9. Press Restart button.

I have read all of the instructions you have listed, and I see only ONE problem.  I do not have a “Windows Password”.      I don’t even have a “user name” insofar as  know.  I found one method to find a “user name”, however nothing about getting a password.  There must be “some way” to do this, however what if I never had one?  This is a “custom built” computer, Win 7 Premium, and I don’t recall ever seeing anything about this.    There is an  “m-“then a number”\“my first name” however I don’t know what it is.

I can’t begin to proceed until I find the “password”  (listed as Step 5 in your instructions). 

I hope that this will not be a roadblock which I cannot pass.  Fingers crossed.

Do you type a password when Windows starts normally? If so, that’s the password to use. Maybe it doesn’t have a password in your case.

Need HELP please, Mr.Brian.    I followed the instructions about hitting the F8 key continuously, and here is what popped up (nothing else other than this box on the page)

Highlighted everything that was in the “box”.  The box was smaller to medium size and in the middle of the page.

I attempted that twice, and it came up the same way both times.   I did not KNOW which option to select, so I didn’t have any choice and hope that didn’t mess anything up (??).

I don’t understand the reason I did not see an Admin Account instead of what I am reporting.    I am totally “lost” with this now, and very demoralized.

Pressing the Esc key in that situation was the right thing to do :).

Let’s change step 2 to this:

2. Press the F3 key repeatedly while computer is restarting to get “Windows Boot Manager” screen. Then press F8 key to get “Advanced Boot Options” screen.

Mr.Brian, I actually “did it”!!!   Followed each step very, very carefully (a lot of typing that had to be proof read to ensure that it was correct), and it all went through with no problems I’m SO happy to report.      I won’t be able to be on the computer much longer, however will wait and see if there is anything else that must be done today.   Hopefully you will see this message and I’ll still be waiting for about another 30 minutes before I shut down.  Thank you once again for the “marvelous” help!

Mr.Brian, it would not go through.   The screenshot wouldn’t go, and then it wouldn’t let me send a msg.  It said “error” something about the attachment.   I can tell you that there was a reply on the Command Prompt on the first command that it was completed.   The second one did not have any comments.   Other than that there was nothing else.   Apologies about my inadequacies.     I am upset with myself, although there was “nothing” there.

Apologies for the lengthy amount of time.  I had one message ready to send, then noted that there was an extra light on the top row of the computer, and that took me a while to determine what that is.   It’s still there and has something to do with a “scroll-lock”, which I don’t know h how it got there.

I have been having all kinds of delays with the website.   I also have another “problem”, I’ve never had previously.   On the top row (right) of the computer there are 3 lights.   I know what the first 2 are (numbers lock) and Caps Lock.   I checked and this light is for a “scroll-lock”, and I have no idea what that is, and I think that could be what is slowing everything down, however do not know.   Also do not know how to get rid of it.

I got quite a lot of information about the computer, however I do not know if you need it or not.   It is a Win7 Home Premium, SP1. Then there is data about the processor if you need that.  System type:  64 Bit OS.  Computer name, domain & workgroup settings.  I did not know I even had a Workgroup.

I followed the directions about restarting as set forth on your reference, using the “restart” method referenced there.   Please let me know if there is any other information that you may need?   And Please, please, tell me how to get this “scroll-lock” light turned off on the computer?   Thank you for any help with this – – – I have never had that light on previously because I don’t even know what it is.

Now I’d like to see the contents of file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log, which contains the results of the most recent DISM command that you ran.

1. Run Window Explorer.

2. Using Window Explorer, navigate to folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.

3. Double-click on file CheckSUR.log. This should open file CheckSUR.log in Notepad.

4. In Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select the entire contents of that file, then press Ctrl-C to copy the contents to the clipboard.

5. In your web browser, go to site https://pastebin.com/.

6. In the “New Paste” textbox, press Ctrl-V to paste contents.

7. Press “Create New Paste” button.

8. Tell me the URL that appears in the browser’s address bar.

Well now comes my short-comings in knowledge.    I have never used Windows Explorer, and I NEVER use the IE because, of course I haven’t been able to get the cumulative updates which are so necessary to have whether we ever “use” it or not.

Second, I don’t think I still  have OneNote because I never used it, however I would have to check on that to find out (if I can determine a method to “check” to find out).  Also it appears that it was part of Office 2010 which I understand is no longer operational.   I have not received ANY updates on any Office version.   So I don’t know how to approach this issue.  I show “One Note” listed when I do a search, however I thought I had deleted it.   I will need to try to see what I can find that will provide some information for me.    I got rid of a lot of programs (or just never used them) because I prefer Corel Word Perfect, and even that I have not used except on an “old” XP which is never on-line.

Example:     ” navigate to folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS”.   I don’t have a clue how to execute this maneuver (like a lot of other commonalities which most “users” know.  I have seen a lot of files which reference OneNote, however never used any of them.

I am not optimistic that I can overcome all of my short-comings in this regard.   For some reason I am having more and more problems accessing “Our Topic”.   I go to the bookmarks, using Firefox, and there is “nothing there”.    It just “spins”.   I don’t know what is wrong.   I am going to go back to the emails and try another link or 2 from those that are sent about various topics.   I hope that I will have more time to research information relevant to what I have (no Office 2010 from what I’ve read).   It seems that it takes “forever” for me to get “anything” to come up in our discussion here – – – – whether it’s a reply, or whatever, it just has “no speed” at all, and I can’t determine “why”.   I’ve never had a problem such as this previously.

I sincerely apologize for once again being so utterly deficient regarding all of MS programs.

I don’t think I’ve ever used the Internet Explorer that I can recall.   I’ve spent literally TONS of time just trying to get my updates back, haven’t had time for much else and am ready to pull my hair out.    I won’t have time today to start trying some of the options, however I will if at all possible do what I can.   Have appts. for this week (2 in one day) so it really cuts into my time.   I feel guilty about how much of your time I have encroached upon with all of the wonderful, amazing help you have provided for me.    Thank you SO much!

I have been trying for “ages” to get into this site…..   Apparently it’s been “up and down” which explains the reason I felt it was ” quirky”.   At any rate I’ll try to type fast – – – I wanted to get this message to you ASAP.    The attempted update FAILED once again, attaching screenshot of it.

Now I still feel that the FIRST time this occurred (and has been continuing was KB4014661.  It failed when I was trying to do an update from the CATALOG – – – I don’t know exactly when it came out, but I had the failure on April 29th, so it was either a March or April update.  It was a Security only update (I was doing the Group B at that time – – – a really DUMB thing on my part).   What occurred was that as it was downloading, the connection was broken, and I had the “services stopped” as we were told to do.   Well, when I tried to DL & Install again, it FAILED.    And it’s been that way ever since.   I know for certain that is when it began.   I can’t find my notes right now, however it is there in the “history”.

I must hurry, and get this posted before the site goes “south” again.  I am exhausted.

Mr.Brian:   My apologies for the delay.    It’s been “crazy” and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to get back here so I could attempt to follow the new instructions.   I’ve printed a copy of them, so hopefully I can execute them without making any errors.   Thank you so much for your patience.   I think the site was having problems again yesterday because I checked and it showed it as being “up and down”.

I think that you are directing me to go back to the  link cited above and start that process all over again.    Is that correct?    I have gone back to the 16th and the we were occupied with other maneuvers, which is where I must have “fallen off of the train”.

I will attempt to return to those instructions and see what I can accomplish.  I know I have problems with some of the terminology, and ignorance, however I will do my best.

Thank you once again for all of your help with getting the computer “cleaned up”.   It is WONDERFUL being able to know that I can do the “check for updates” (VERY CAREFULLY), after going through the unhiding process.   I must return and study that once again to ensure that I have gotten almost everything out of the hidden file.

According to Bob99’s web research, the command reg delete HKLM\components /v pendingrequired which you successfully did fixes Windows Update for most of the users with error number 80070308. There are some things we haven’t tried yet, but you can try again now to install the July 2017 Windows monthly rollup if you want. Don’t despair if it doesn’t work yet though.

Oh, Mr.Brian, that is WONDERFUL news!   I could have never done “anything” without your exceptional knowledge, and expertise.   You are absolutely WONDERFUL!!!    I may not be able to “try” that installation tomorrow, because of having 2 appointments, and a person to take care of the furnace problem.    I think I will be able to sleep much better tonight after knowing that there is such a good possibility that the “error from hell” will be buried.   Thank you again so VERY, VERY MUCH!

Not exactly declaring “Victory”, when it takes me a few minutes to just get logged in successfully.   I swear I don’t know what’s going on with this site.  It takes “forever” to log in, get a reply opened up, etc.

No, I can’t declare victory when there are so many insurmountable problems “out there”, and also because there are so many problems with the website.  All I can do is “HOPE LARGELY” to put it euphemistically.    Thank you again for all of your help.   I don’t understand any of it, however as long as it’s a “possible cure”, I’m willing.

Mr.Brian:   I don’t know how that period got into the link, however it appears that I had to copy it, and that is the reason for the unwanted “period”.   The instructions which appear on that website are as follows:
“How to Reboot a Windows 7, Vista, or XP Computer
The quickest way to reboot Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP is through the Start menu:

1. Click the Start button on the taskbar.

The “small arrow” in sentence 2 above shows a “restart” and this is what I have been doing.  This is the method I have been using, so I am “assuming” it is the manner in which I should continue to do the reboot?  I wish to verify that before I carry out those instructions, and try to install that old July update.   Thank you once, again, and always.

Oh, oh, Mr.Brian:

I gave the wrong impression in my message.   I don’t known the difference between “shut down”, and “reboot”.   What I intended to say was that when it “calls for a restart“, or “rebo0t”, I use the method cited on the website.   Otherwise I just do a “shutdown” (normally).

Does this mean I need to do that last “exercise” over again?    I hope not, however when I’ve been shutting down, I have not been using “the method as set forth on the website”.

Please just let me know if I need to redo this, and then I will do the “preferred method” of rebooting.  (It never fails that my total “ignorance” comes back to get me).   I had already done a shutdown right after I did the long “command prompt” I finished, when I received your text telling me about the website and the link.   It was quite a while after I had done the shutdown before I received your message.

I will be back later today, and if I need to redo that “command prompt” I will get started whenever I can, and will send you a message first so you will know.   Is that “acceptable”??   A huge apol0gy on my part.   After I had done the “exercise” and before I received the link, I had already done a shutdown or two.

Apologies for being unable to get back to the computer – – – I was away from home all day yesterday.   I’m having serious hearing problems and I had no time for anything else.

Yes, I see your new instructions.   It is very early here yet, however, I have to pick up a prescription and they don’t open until 9:00 a.m. (8:00 a.m. your time).     As soon as i get the prescription, I will return here and send you a message before I begin the process so you will know I am working on it.

I sent Woody a message yesterday about all of the “weird” problems I had been having, and he thought it could be a browser problem – – –  however this morning everything is running “normally”.    That is a huge relief.   I will get back here as soon as I possibly can, and thank you once again for your help.

Mr..Brian:   I just want to CLARIFY this once and for all (your following statements):

I understand that, however then you have this written:

“When you shut down the computer, press the “Shut down” button itself.”

If I click on the “shut down” this turns the computer OFF.    If I show the “shutdown”‘ and then click on “restart”, this shuts and down and restarts it.    I’m confused (the usual “dummy”), as to which action I am supposed to take.   Please clarify.  Must run for now.  Will check when I return.   Thank you once again.

Mr.Brian:   I “think” I know what you are referring to now.    I think that you indicate that after the”Command Prompt” is finished, I DO A “RESTART“.     Once it has been restarted, then I “try” to install the old July update.

THEN after I’ve done that maneuver, it is that I click on the “SHUT DOWN” to turn the computer off.    I think this is what you want me to do.    It just came to me that this is the logical way to do it?    Apologies for being so “dense”.

Mr.Brian:  Thank you so much for the prompt response.    I will “watch the clock” so that hopefully I can catch you in the 9-10 hours you mentioned that you would not be here.   It would be REALLY wonderful if we could succeed at this endeavor – – – –  I am hoping and praying that you will be available, and that everything will go smoothly, and above all, “be successful”.

As I mentioned this started with a failed catalog issue way back in March or April, and I’ve not been able to get these specific updates, subsequent to that.   It’s only these that won’t install, however they are the Critical Security Monthly Quality Rolllup for Windows 7 x64.   At that time if you were Group B, you had to use the Catalog Update, and that was the end of my ability to get any of these since that time.    Thank you once again for “Trying Again”.    I am willing to try almost anything that has a possibility of being able to get things back to “normal”.   I appreciate your help very, very much, Mr.Brian!

IT WORKED!!!!!!    Mr.Brian, I was very, very careful, and triple checked everything.   I was holding my breath through every minute, and it did take me longer than usual, however I wanted to annotate every “move”.    That update is now safely installed!!!   The DL & install took less than 20 minutes, and the rest of the time I was triple checking everything that was on the updates, including the “Optionals”.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!   You’ve accomplished the “miracle” that I was praying for.    I cannot begin to adequately express my deepest gratitude for your outstanding help.  I will never forget it!!  

We can now showed “RESOLVED” on this one!!!   I am SO happy!!!

You mean the July 2017 Windows monthly rollup installed? If so, great! However, that is no guarantee that you won’t have problems installing other updates. There are still other things we should check, but since it’s your computer you are free to decide if you want to do them or not.

I suggest that you now:

1. Check for Windows updates.

2. Unhide the August 2017 Windows monthly rollup.

3. Try to install the August 2017 Windows monthly rollup.

Yes, the July 2017 Windows monthly rollup is installed (KB4025341).   I would like to pursue all possibilities which you suggest.    Since I’ve been awake since before 3:00 a.m. this morning and haven’t had any rest all day, I’m completely wiped out right now.

I will begin by working on the updates you have referenced above as soon as possible, however don’t know exactly what time that will be.   I will try to send a message after I have started to work on the suggested actions on the updates.   I know I have thanked you numerous times, however,  you have also earned my deepest respect for your help, and your persistence in working on this “nightmare” problem.   I will never forget it!

Mr.Brian:   It took a while because I wanted to be certain I was looking for the August update, and not the wrong one.    I verified everything, and it’s KB4034664.   DL & Installed without any problems at all.

This was “the one” which started this long, long process of trying to find a solution for, and now it has truly SUCCEEDED.   I carefully went back, after I had done “another “shut-down” process, and checked it all out, and there are only 2 in the “Important List now”, as follows: The MSRT, which I’ve always been told is “safe”, however seems I did see something recently that one individual may have had some issue with it (cannot recall now).   So if you agree, I will install the current MSRT.

There are quite a few “Optionals”, none checked, however it’s getting to be a “mess” because there are so many for .NET Framework (which I know nothing about).

Thank you once again for providing the “RESOLUTION” for this Topic.   Apologies for taking a while to go through everything, however I wanted to be certain that I was following the proper protocol.

Mr.Brian:  I am having problems again with the website.   It’s taking “forever” even after being logged in.   I am glad I noted your message here about KB3177467.

I checked this out, and I already had it installed (Important & Successful) on 11/4/16.   It apparently was published on 9/19/16.   I found this in the “Update History”.

One question I posed, previously:

Is it “safe” to install the MSRT?

Also if there are any other maneuvers you think I should try, I will try to return later and check on that.   It appears that you are having a very busy day too.  Your expertise and knowledge are always in high demand.

Mr.Brian:   I don’t know where all of the messages in the Forum about “New Directions” came from however it’s a few day’s worth!  I’m beginning to wonder if our Website will ever return to “normal”….  It delays the responses and creates a “mess”.   Just a whole lot to try to absorb all at once (for me ).

I’ve noticed that you have referenced “Servicing Stack update”, and also Windows Update Mini-Tool” (with/check box superseded “checked”).     Are there any links which I could use in obtaining information relevant to these?

There are other things I’d like to check on your system when you have the time for it.

About Windows Update MiniTool: I believe I haven’t mentioned it in this topic.

About Servicing Stack update: That is KB3177467, which you said you already have installed.

Mr.Brian:    I was almost totally unable to get into this site, however I went back to the emails and that brought me to a menu which was “readable”.   If, at any time, you don’t hear from me, you will know that I have not been able to get the site to be “functional”.     A while ago, I was only getting Part of the page (the right side was truncated so you could not get the entire message.     I am at a loss as to know what’s occurring however, others will have to address that.

Thank you for your “okay” on the MSRT.   Yes, if there is anything else which you feel is in need of checking, please do let me know.    No, you did not mention those two programs I asked about, however I’ve seen you, as well as others, mention them, and I know nothing about them.   Some seem to not care for them….   I don’t know anything about them.

I think I do have a question about a .NET Framework update (older one).  Need to check as I think I may have hidden it on 9/26/17, and now I think there is a “new on” in the updates.  I have so much “paper” in front of me, I need to get more organized before I study that situation and know where I am.

Thank you for your recommendations.   I appreciate your help, very, very much, and apologize that I am “late” getting into the site.

Mr.Brian, thank you for the guidance on those updates you recommended unhiding.    I have only one “OLD” update that is NOT hidden, that  is listed in the “Important” ones.   I think that because when it came out, there was never any specific “go ahead on it”.   It’s too long ago to remember now, however I normally would not install anything that had not been “cleared”.

Here are the statistics on that one:    KB4019112

May 2017, Security and Quality Rollup For .NET Framework.   It only goes to 4.6.2.    77.8 MB.  Published 5-9-17

I already installed the MSRT without incident.

the only ones I have remaining are ALL in the “Optional List“.    They are:  KB4042076, 61.6 MB – – – – -Published  10/17/17. Security & Qual. Rollup.   Goes to 4.7.

Next:     KB 4043766, Published 10/10/17 – – – –  Is italicized, *Has Recommended Update” noted.    Goes up to 4.7.

Next:  KB3186497, Published 6/27/17,  47.5 MB, NET.Framework for win 7 &Win Serv 2008 R2.   Is italicized.  “Has Recommended Update”  annotated.  I don’t have a clue as to the reason this one is so “old”.

As I mentioned these are all “Optionals”.    I’m sure I have  the (Important) September 2017 Rollup hidden (KB4038777 – – – –  198.5 MB.   I’m the Group A  (Win7. x64, Home Prem).

***I  may have hidden  the .NET Framework Security Monthly Quality Rollup  KB4041083 – – – –  61.6MB.  Dated 9/12/17.   I will check that to be certain.  That one was “Important”

I note that there are a LOT of hidden updates, and I’m not sure how to “clean this up”.

ALSO,  the OLD ONE  – – – – KB2952664.  This one is dated 3/15/17.  Recommendations have been varied, so I’ve just left it in the “Optionals”.  Should it be hidden, or just continue to leave it in the “Optionals”?     I always hide the PREVIEWS as those are the instructions I’ve always seen for the PREVIEWS.

One of the reasons there are so many hidden is because my “updating” process was broken so that I “could not” DL & install so many updates successfully because of the “error which is the subject of this Topic.     Without your help I would NEVER been successful with those updates which could not be DL & installed.

Mr.Brian:   I overlooked replying to this message, or else the reply just disappeared.  Yes,  I did have the one KB installed that you had inquired about, and the reason I asked about the Windows Update MiniTool is because I’ve seen you and others mention it as being a “good tool“, and I need all of the help I can get.

I will hide the KB2952664, immediately as you indicated I should.

Also should I just leave the OLD “Important” update (checked) where it presently is?  It is very old, and don’t know if it should be installed or not.   It is dated 5/9/17, and is KB4019112 (77.8 MB). I’d suggest to unhide all hidden updates except for KB2952664. We’ll worry about installing updates later. But first I’d like you to do this again:

1. Open an elevated command prompt.

2. In the elevated command prompt, type this command:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth

Press Enter key then wait 20 minutes (or longer if it’s not done yet).

3. Reboot computer.

I’m a bit late, however didn’t want to start anything before I could “stay with it”.   I will begin with the elevated Command Prompt shortly, and send a screenshot (if I can get everything to cooperate).   Thought it would take too long to begin to begin with the “unhiding process”.   I am a little concerned about choosing a hidden update that may be “dangerous”.   Is that a possiblity??

Mr.Brian:    It was successful and I’m attaching a screenshot to this message.   I will now do a check for updates and see if anything has changed.    It appeared to me that the “restart” went rather rapidly, so hoping that all is “well”.

I am continuing to wonder about the KB4019112 (77.8 MB). Unhiding updates doesn’t install anything, so it should be fine to unhide updates.

Please leave KB4019112 alone for now.

When you’re done unhiding the hidden updates, please let me know.

I will finish unhiding the updates still pending.   I have found that it is faster to unhide several updates at one time, and will report back when it is finished.  I will try to finish it in the morning.  There are not many remaining now, as I did not have a lot to begin with.

Doesn’t this error mean:

ERROR_REQUEST_OUT_OF_SEQUENCE
“The client of a component requested an operation which is not valid given the state of the component instance.”

Maybe reboot twice without installing anything and they try one update at a time?

The initial issue causing the error code has been solved, and the initial poster (walker) and the respondent (MrBrian) have slowly moved on to other items that may again trigger the same error code.

They are in the process of trying to avoid another occurrence of the code by examining various files for clues to what may have caused the problem in the first place.

If you are experiencing the same symptoms or error code with Windows update not wanting to install an update, you may wish to try the solution used in the posts above. However, just because it worked for this situation doesn’t mean it will guaranteed work for you, as every situation is different.

A simple google search using terms such as “Windows Update error code 80070308” is a great way to get started if you’re having problems.

@Bob99:  I know how this error code appeared, and the reason why.  It related “specifically” to a download from the Catalog, which was interrupted in “mid-stream”, because of an interruption (power outage, possibly).  This occurred on 4/29/17.  It was NOT because of a faulty update.    This one was KB4014661.

Subsequently there were 3 others which also failed.  This one  KB4019263 (5/28/17) was another one from the Catalog.

Another one was KB 4034664 which failed on 9/8/17 and  had other “issues” as well, however I do not have the details.   This one was installed SUCCESSFULLY on 10/21/17  TWO DAYS AGO.

I have never previously in 20 years ever had updates fail.

The last one to fail was on 10/13/17 and 10/16/17.  Then after Mr.Brian and I continued working on various methods to resolve the problem it SUCCEEDED on 10/20/17.    That was 3 days ago.   That was KB4025341.

I am now in the process of unhiding updates, which is NOT to search for “bad updates”.  The other updates referenced in the “history” above are no longer available.

I am very grateful for the help I received from Mr.Brian.   It was absolutely invaluable !

Mr.Brian:   During the time when all of the “replies” and messages were “lost”, I’ve found that the one I had sent to you about the September Sec/Quality Update  KB4038777 got “lost” in the mess, and I never did get to it.   Now I’ve found it in the “hidden” list, however can’t locate any current information about it.   Apparently there were a lot of problems that some users had with it.   I think the last message I looked at said it was “better to wait” for a higher MSDefcon number before installing this one.   Do you have any current information that says “it’s safe” to install?   I have not been able to locate anything “recent”, however I would like to get this one installed if possible and at least have that one out of the way.

I don’t know where else to search for information on this, as the thread that was addressing it “went south” with a ton of other texts.

Hope you have some current information on this which has “cleared it” for installation?  Sorry to have to bother you again, however I would be very relieved it I could install it with nothing to be concerned about.    Thank you for any information you may be able to provide.   I sincerely appreciate your guidance with this issue.

@Mr.Brian:  Had a few minutes respite, and I’ve gained some “time”, so I’ll be back here by 2:00 – 2:30 p.m., your time.    KB 2952664 is already hidden, and the KB4038777 is unhidden,  so some progress was made.   I took a quick look at emails, and I had almost 50, so had to try to search for a few of the most important – – — very little time to do anything with that many e-mails – – – –  (very unusual) for me.

Will see if I can locate any information on those two “very old” updates, and also read the site you sent the link for.   Thank  you for sending everything!

Mr.Brian:  I can see that I overlooked this message “originally” somehow.    I will have to study it more, however I don’t think I still have “One Note” because quite some time ago, I tried to uninstall it because I never used it.    However I will see if I can find a few moments when I return to search for it and see what I can find.

Since I’ve never had any “formal” lessons, and have had no one to guide me, I’ve probably made a lot of dumb errors.   I will see if I can “salvage” something about One Note.   I see what you are referring to with the Window Explorer, versus the Internet Explorer, however I don’t think I’ve ever used it.

Hopefully will come up with “something” later in the afternoon.   Thank you for reminding me about that “old message”.

With regards to your post #140700 (directly above this reply), you don’t need OneNote at all. The program MrBrian is talking about, Notepad, is a text editor and viewer that’s been built-in to Windows for a great number of years now, so every edition has it. If you simply double click on a text file, it should open up in Notepad by default with no additional effort needed on your part.

@Mr.Brian, Bob99, anonymous, et al:    I have found that the “Net” is showing that Yahoo is COMPLETELY “down”, and apparently has been for quite some time.   I cannot gain access to even sign in, so cannot view any incoming messages.      No explanation that I’ve seen as yet.  There was no problem with the “security update” because I noted that there was information on the Net about Yahoo’s website being totally inoperable at this time.   I also noted that it was appearing to be recovering, however that could be sporadic (?).

I’ve already bookmarked this site several times, and nothing seems to help insofar as getting it to “perform” as it should be expected to do.    I’ve tried using the links from emails, the bookmarks, etc., and don’t have a clue as to what the problem could be insofar as it taking “forever” to get logged in, and to send a reply.

I intend to delete the few bookmarks I have for this site, however that isn’t going to help when I am attempting to use a link in one of the emails.   No rhyme or reason.   Thank you very much for your recommendations!

As I write this reply, the site is being VERY VERY slow. It took me a full three clock minutes to get logged in from the time I clicked the login button after typing in my info until the page began loading with the indications that I had successfully logged in. Then, it took the site a full four minutes on the clock to load this page after I clicked the “Reply” link above your last reply to me.

Thank you very much for replying – – – – My experiences yesterday were exactly the same as yours (if not worst).   I spent so much time on trying to make things function that it was a total waste.

I will copy the link you added to your reply, to ensure that I won’t have a problem with that again (hopefully).  Thank you for the information on One Note.  Have never used it, so it will be a new “experience”.   I have Word 2010, however have never used that either so it’s never been updated, and now I think it’s defunct (?).

I did have a message with instructions on how to use the Windows Explorer, which I have also never used, however I have not been able to locate that message.   I have tried to check the updates so I can get everything fully “ready” to move forward with the instructions posted in Post 138180.

Thank you once again for the information you have provided.   It is sincerely appreciated.

Mr.Brian:    Has this Topic been closed?   I lost all of my messages when everything went “south” during the “attack” and have never been able to come up with the thread I was working on when everything was “cut off”.   This is about KB 4038777.   I found it in the hidden group, and that’s when I searched back to Sept. and found the thread that was “cut off”.  Cannot locate any other information.

If this Topic has been closed, I will try to locate this information “somewhere”.   I would like to get it installed if possible.  At the time I was working on it, is when the “plug was pulled”.  If you have any information on this I would appreciate it very much. This was the Quality Monthly Rollup for September.   Last remark I noted was that someone stated “better to wait for a higher “MSDefcon number” before installing “anything”.   Thank you if you’re still “out there”.

To help him out a bit, and to answer your question, from what I can tell of what he has said in a couple of previous posts, please leave KB4038777 hidden for now. It does still have an issue or two that might affect you, but that’s another thing to tackle later.

The next item @MrBrian would like you to do (based on what he has said in post #140449 just above this area of this thread) is to provide one of your logs to him that Windows has created during all of the troubleshooting you’ve been doing. He will provide you with instructions on just how to get it to him later this evening after he signs on to this site.

@Mr. Brian:    I apologize for being unable to get  here sooner.    I noted the Defcon at “4”, and thought I’d better try to be sure to check as much as possible before installing anything.   I haven’t seen anything “new” insofar as “warnings” other than those already posted.

I’m assuming that KB4038777 is “safe” as I’ve not seen anything to the contrary, or any other “warnings”.  I’ve unhidden the last .NET Framework update that was hidden.   Other than that I have all PREVIEWS hidden.   Therefore I will install the KB4038777, unless I see something else that states anything to the contrary.

As soon as I can ensure that I have everything I will attempt to open the Windows Explorer, If I can locate the instructions on how to do that.   Bob99 provided some information about One Note, and I have that information.   Will try to post progress, or lack thereof, as I begin to try to move ahead in complying with the instructions as you have set forth in the post 138180.  Thank you for all of the information you have provided.  As always I am attempting to follow it to the letter.

@Mr.Brian:  Are you receiving any messages from me?   I sent one yesterday, and I sent one earlier this morning.  I couldn’t see where the one I sent to you earlier today was ever “marked”, so don’t know if it reached you or not.   I only have a few more actions to verify, and then I will “try” to comply with the instructions in Post 138180.  I do apologize for my lack of computer skills, however I will try anything if I have some assistance.   Thank you again for everything you have helped me with.   I sincerely appreciate it.

This one is not relevant to any .NET updates, however it is one that was listed, and just “disappeared”.    It appears to be KB4041681     Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Win7 x64:    KB4041681  IMPORTANT        202.4 MB      pub  10/10/17

This just occurred over the last 2 days, apparently when I was “unhiding upates”.   I have no clue as to the reason this occurred.   I noticed that it disappeared from the OPTIONALS. 

I have spent so much time trying to get things back to where they should be, and now there are “new” problems.    Please, if possible, provide some guidance for this dilemma?  I am assuming that the update that just disappeared was due to unhiding one of the updates.   I am overwhelmed and exhausted at this point in time.

Any help you could provide would be a “Godsend”.    Thank you for all of the help you have previously provided, Mr.Brian.

I’d prefer that you don’t install anything further at this time. My first priority is to fix issues that might interfere with installing updates. The next thing I hope you would do is follow the instructions in post #138180. It’s probably best to wait until you are feeling refreshed to start doing so.

Mr.Brian:      I fully agree, trying to do too many things at one time, such as “unhiding updates”, and then trying to change course to something different is extremely difficult.    I will be forced to wait until I can recover before I attempt starting anything “new” at this point in time.  If and when I can begin to pursue following the post #138180, I may have to ask a few questions about the Windows Explorer.  I’m sure there was a message somewhere about using the Windows Explorer, however I could not locate it.

I sincerely appreciate your advice and assistance, as always.   Thank you for replying and for the invaluable advice you always provide.

@Mr.Brian:    Yes, I totally agree with you.   That is an excellent idea.   I knew everything was taking a long time to load, however was unaware of the reason.   I will not have much time today, however I will begin wherever I can.   I am feeling much better today.  I know following the directions of Post #138180 is the top priority now.

I do have a copy of the “last screenshot” (I think this is the last one) which I will attach to this message.   Would that suffice, or must this be retrieved by the special directions you provided??

BTW, I located the missing update which seemed to have disappeared yesterday, I’m very happy to report!!   Thank you again for creating a new topic.   I sincerely appreciate your help, outstanding as always!

Mr. Brian:  Thank you for the detailed information about the new Topic you will be setting up.  I  do not think I will be referring back to the messages in this Topic, however I will have it there, if needed.

Fewer messages will make utilizing the new Topic much easier, and I appreciate all of the work you are doing to create this.   I am looking forward to the new “Topic”!   Thank you once again, for all of your diligent hard work, and your amazing knowledge!

Mr.Brian:     Not being familiar with “unhiding”, I must ask “May I check off several of these at one time?   Since I’ve very seldom done this, I’m still in a learning curve (I’ve been stuck there for eons it seems).   Every time I unhide one of these it automatically does a “check for updates”.

Also can the “PREVIEWS” be hidden “forever“??

If you could provide this information for me, I think I could get this done much faster than trying to unhide one at a time.  Thank you once again for your most kind and patient assistance.

You can unhide as many updates as you want at one time.

You could keep the previews hidden if you want to.

The “usual” unexpected interruptions have caused a delay, however it is #ONE on my agenda.    I agree that the Preview updates should be hidden.

I now have all of the hidden updates except for a very few, unhidden.  Kept the KB2952664 hidden.    I have 2 very old ones that I have unhidden, however I’m not sure about these as they are REALLY old.   One is KB3011780 (11/18/2014), and the other one is  KB3139398  (3/8/16).  Both are in the “Important” Group, so now I have 3 of these.  Both are named:

Security Update for Win7x64.

I also have another one or 2, I’m not certain about (these  may be drivers).   I’ll just keep them hidden until I get these checked out.  These two  may have been superseded, however 2014 is the year I got this computer, so I’m at a loss how it became hidden.

I took the time to try to read as many new postings as possible before finishing up with the “unhiding”.   Thank you for the guidance with carrying it out properly.
