Joe, I’m confused by this. My ZA Pro says I’m up to date, but it is 5.5.094. The ZoneLabs site is touting the suite update, but I don’t find anything to say what the version of the individual apps is. confused

      • #961963

Well, it allowed me to download the update since I has purchased the extended download, but I still don’t understand why I didn’t receive notification of this.

      • #961978

Apparently, Zone Labs will send out notices to its customers who already own ZAP within two weeks. It’s possible to download the new version and just do an upgrade; that worked fine for me.

    • #961967

Ugh! It is paranoid about everything, including the normal apps, antivirus and antispyware apps, AND ITSELF!! I’m sure once I get used to it, I’ll appreciate its capabilities, but right now, I’m cursing every time it alerts me to “dangerous” behavior like opening Outlook! hairout. It apparently “learns” as you go along and tell it what to allow, but it feels like it might be a long learning curve. headthrob It reminds me of training an email filter. shrug Not sure I would recommend the upgrade to anyone who was intimidated by this kind of thing.

      • #962035

The “approved applications” list should have been migrated from the earlier version, unless they have changed from “application” control to “component-level” control (like Outpost Firewall Pro). There is a lot more training with that feature turned on.

        • #962065

I expected it to migrate, but it the program settings did not appear to do so, although some of the other settings did. shrug One irritant, is that it tends to identify the temp files used when an installer is being run as spyware! hairout

I think most vendors of any security related software are having that software be more restrictive with any release these days. They are assuming that is OK with most people and that folks will just put up with the inconvenience of ‘training’ a new release.

Well, I pity anyone who isn’t savy in this software if they try to actually use their computer after installing this version because EVERYTHING gets shut down, even the on-line “additional information” in the ZA warning screens! I think that is a bit extreme, particularly for a novice user.

          • #962238

Unfortunately, many software vendors find it easier to treat people like idiots and take the heat rather than coming up with a comprehensive set of instructions, help, and migration aids. Some of that I suspect is because many (if not most) of todays users install software and attempt to use it without reading anything.

Well, I probably made the mistake of not accepting their defaults, since I didn’t want to override the settings I already had. bummer Maybe a novice would be perfectly happy with whatever ZA thinks is appropriate. shrug I can’t fault them for that, but I think the “advanced” version should have a little more configuration control in the upgrade. yep

            • #962348

              Charlotte,
              I agree with you 100%.
The advanced version was more of a “I know what’s best for you so don’t argue” application.
When they tell you to use the “upgrade” version in order to retain your old settings and then go ahead and over ride them all, just doesn’t seem right to me. ( or you too )

            • #962351

Could be an upgrade bug. Zonelabs has been known to be upgrade unfriendly in the past.

I’ve never experienced that before, although I heard lots of others complain about it. I’ve used ZA for years and this is the first real “problem” I’ve encountered. Mine is working the way I want it to (more or less) now, but it wasn’t painless. ouch

            • #963854

I just “upgraded” my ZA Suite over the weekend, and was wondering why my SBC Self Support Tool & MSN Messenger were generating ZA messages for trying to “track keystrokes and mouse movements!” Does anyone know if these apps are really tracking this info? If so, I’m happy that the ZA settings were changed. If these are false positives, then I’m in the same boat with everyone else having expressed their opinions here.

              Just my 2cents !

            • #963862

              Don,

Welcome to the BOAT, along with the rest of us.
I think if you go into ZA program control, you’ll find these progs on the “ask” or “not allowed” list. along with a long list of previously allowed programs.
Let them have access. Go down the list and allow your known good ones and remove the unknowns, so that it will ask for permission the next time they are used.

            • #963924

That’s OK, I got the same kind of warnings when Microsoft was trying to install the new Windows validation gizmo (whatever it’s called) for use with Microsoft Update. shrug

        • #962297

If a lot of people complain, then it’s a bug. If they don’t, then it’s a feature. smile

          • #962314

yep Although, speaking from experience sometime to properly implement a new feature you have to modify (i.e. break) an old one.

      Joe,

I downloaded and installed the latest ZA from your post. Opted to do an “upgrade install” which I don’t usually do.
Lo and behold, it changed ALL OF MY existing entries to BLOCKED ! ( red X’s all the way down the list )

I had to go back and allow everything that I knew was OK and delete the rest, so that I can allow or block the unknowns as they come up.

As the late Jimmie Durante used to say: “What a revoltin’ development this is”

      • #962140

yep, I did the same thing. Upgrades in the past have always preserved the settings. sad

    • #967858

After fighting with ZAP 6 for a couple of weeks, I went back to ZAP 5.5. I give up — ZAP 6 is just too annoying. Will have to make a gif showing steam coming out of my ears!
