After installing Service Pack 1, Windows 7 no longer recognizes my Dell S2309W Flat Panel Monitor.

I can set the resolution from the desktop, but it just isn’t as good as before I installed SP1.

I’ve tried powering down the monitor then reconnecting. No joy .

I would download a new driver from Dell. This should give you your monitor back. Windows does not have drivers for all monitors I guess. Quite often the windows drivers are older that what the manufacturers will have available.

      • #1287023

I’ll give that a try. Thank you.

Are there any caveats, things I need to watch for?

      • #1287281

This is getting way beyond my kin. Visited the website, it told me to download DellDriverDownLoadManger.Application. I did so and ran it. It told me there was nothing to download and told me to download the thing manually. That would have been ok, except I could not find any thing that resembled a Driver.

    • #1287049

Not that I’m aware of. Monitor drivers are usually pretty safe to install, especially when downloading from the manufacturer.

      WSG,

You might look into the free Double Driver as insurance against this problem in the future.

      RG & Retired Geek,

If Windows 7 won’t recognize the printer, Control Panel shows it as a “Generic PnP Monitor” will installing new drivers do any good?

    • #1287057

      WSG,

I assume that you meant to say monitor vs printer in the previous post as monitors are what we have been discussing. What the Generic really means is that Windows does not have a builtin driver for that model. Restoring or Reinstalling the correct driver should solve that problem.

I had a problem with SP1 also and I solved it by going into Device Manager and uninstalling my DVD drive, which would no longer work, and then rebooting and letting Windows reinstall its native driver and it solved the problem. Now why Windows would futz its own drivers I don’t understand but then with a system as complicated as Windows often unexpected things happen and often the non-obvious solution is the one that fixes the problem. Ain’t technology wonderful, can’t you just wait to have a computer drive your car down the highway at 70Mph.:o:

      What functionality have you lost?

    • #1287286

Here’s the link to the S2309w Windows 7 driver. Just use the button for “Download using your internet browser” not the Dell download manager.

All that does is open the window with the directory in which the files had been extract into. Namely c2309w.cat S@#09w.icm and S2309W.inf.

      • #1287308

Sorry to clarify I follow the steps on the Dell web page and download the file DELL_S2309W_Monitor_A00_R22224.exe
Then following the instructions from the Dell website – type Run from Start – enter DELL_S2309W_Monitor_A00_R22224.exe in the dialog box and follow the on-screen instructions. All that does is extract the three files previously mentioned into the Directory C:DellDriversR222241 then opens the folder with those files in it.

Ok. Now right click on “Computer”, select “Manage”. When the Computer Management applet is loaded click on “Device Manager”. Click on the small arrow next to “Monitors”. Right click on the PNP monitor and select “Update Driver Software”. Click on “Browse my computer…”. Use the Browse button and navigate to the folder containing the .inf file. Click OK, then click Next. You may be presented with a list of devices. Pick yours. Don’t know what to click on now as I don’t have a driver to update at the moment but it should be clear.

Here is lies the problem. When I expand Monitors, the only thing that is shown is “Generic Non-PnP Monitor”

No PnP Monitor Option is displayed.

There is an issue with the Windows 7 SP1 installation. It is known that when performing the Windows 7 SP1 update, it needs to be installed solo. Do not install SP1 in a bundle with any other patches. I was patching two identical PC’s last spring with SP1, etc. The first PC had monitor problems when I tried to upgrade a bundle of patches with SP1 in the bundle. After some research, I was able to rollback the SP1 on the first computer and reinstall solo. Installing the SP1 solo on the second identical computer was uneventful.

OK, did that and as noted only Generic Non-PnP Monitor was displayed. I went ahead and told Windows to update the drivers, intending to point it to the folder where I had downloaded the Dell Drivers. Now shown as Generic PnP Monitor. However, when I select update drivers and point to the Folder with the Dell Drivers, Windows 7 again sticks its tongue out at me and says, “The Best Driver for your device is already installed.” It won’t accept the Dell drivers.

I’m going to try and disconnect the monitor then reconnect to see what happens.

There should be an option to not let Windows load the driver it thinks is best but choose a driver yourself. I don’t remember the exact worging. When I go to Device Manager, choose my monitor, right click and choose Update driver software this is what I get. Browse to the folder and install your monitor drivers.

I did tell Windows let me select and the pointed it to the folder with the recently downloaded Monitor Drivers. In its infinite wisdom the driver update function told me in no uncertain words, “The best driver software for you device is already installed.”

It would not allow me to use the newly downloaded Dell Drivers for the monitor. It maintain that the monitor.sys file in the Windows area of my computer is indeed the best there it.

Got it. Couldn’t find a way to force W7 to look for drivers, but I did find a work-a-around. There was a “Have Disk” ? Option. I selected that expecting to load the drivers from the disk the updating. Soon as the dialog box opened to find the drive ID for the disk it started with A:. I changed it to C: and was able to get to the Dell Drivers from there. Soon as that happened it worked. All is right as rain now.

    • #1287476

What is the functionality you have lost with the presently installed driver?

      • #1287596

Just want it fixed. Not interested in justify my reasons.

    • #1287600

Glad you got it resolved. Thanks for posting back.

To others: the “Have Disk” option becomes available after you start the Driver Update dialog when you select “Browse my computer for driver software” and then “Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer”.

try right clicking in an open space a couple of times till get “scan for hardware changes” click on that and see if it finds anything else.
Failing that choose the non pnp monitor option and follow Joe’s advice to update the driver it may then change it to pnp type.
