I had the following version of Java installed: 1.6.22. There is an update which I try to install but W 7 gives me a notice that the application wasn’t installed correctly. When I tried to install with the “recommended settings”, nothing happened at all. My fierst step to overcome this was to completely uninstall the installed version which worked alright.
I shut off the laptop and then restarted it, went to Java and downloaded the setup exe, but this resulted in the same issue. the next step was to restore to an earlier point which worked. In the Control Panel the Java icon was back but would not open at all. The next step was to uninstall the above version with Revo Uninstaller. After this restarted and tried again to install and this time it did not work at all. Now, I am without Java. What seems here to be the issue? I have to mention that I upgrade the laptop from VISTA SP2 to Windows 7 already in November 2009. Since then I updated Java about twice without a problem.

You should rely on the information provided by the Java installer to determine whether the installation was successful or not. Do not rely on Windows 7. It happens, somewhat frequently, that Windows 7 tells you the install was unsuccessful and it went along fine. My opinion is that Windows 7 really doesn’t know whether the install was successful or not.
If the installer ended normally and you only had success messages, just disregard the information provided by Windows 7.

After the installation, I checked the version, and it still was 1.6.22. So, consequently W 7 was right in notifying that Java was not installed correctly. I forgot to mention one thing: the Java control panel has several tabs and one of them is “update”. That particular tab was never shown, so I must assume that something with the original installation of 1.6.22 was not correct. But what was it?

    • #1267880

Not sure when that was added, but surely it was several point versions ago. There has been an update tab for some time.

    • #1267882

Just to add that I went through the update process for Java 1.6.0_24 and after the installation completed, I didn’t let Java close and open the browser again. I was thus informed that the install would be complete only after a reboot and W7 informed me the update had failed – don’t think it was, just a reboot will be needed. Maybe something similar happened to you.

Just out of interest, do you know what you actually need Java for (if at all)? I deliberately haven’t installed it on Windows 7, and a single program (a web broadband line speed tester) has complained about its absence.

Some websites require Java. There are a few I use that require it-. Of course, some apps also need Java and once in a while I develop in Java too.

      • #1267928

I installed Java because, as being said here, it is needed for some websites but do not know which ones. This raises the general question whether Java is really needed at all. So far, I have not seen a website that explicitely required me to set up Java to view it. I am now a bit puzzled by this. Why? On a second laptop with 64-bit W 7 and IE 8 32-bit, I have the same issue that it would not update the existing version, 6.21!! I never had this issue with Java until the thing was taken over by Oracle (file corruption??). Maybe, I should leave it alone and check how it works with the old version, 6.21 on one Laptop, and without Java on the other (no problem with this update on a XP SP3 desktop at all!!). However, I am always trying to resolve issues, even if it takes months until I find a solution, that’s my nature: follow up!!

    • #1267945

6.21 is an unsafe version. Most updates are due to security bugs, so it’s always to better update it.

      • #1267946

i use win7 all three versions-the way i was informed by Java, was to install both 32 and 64 bit versions IF running a 64 bit ver of win7,Maybe this can help ??

    • #1267967

I ried the 64-bit version of Java to install on the W 7 64-bit version and it worked. The website of Java is somewhat confusing on as far as IE is concerned. If IE is not a 64-bit version it says to install the 32-bit version, and my IE 8 is a 32-bit version. Now, tell me who should understand this. I still have to check on the other laptop where W 7 is 32-bit.

    • #1267970

If you are running 64-bit Windows 7 you have both a 32-bit & 64-bit version of IE installed. Thus, for Java you need both versions.

NOTE: The 32-bit IE is default IE. This is because so many of the IE addins have not been upgraded to a 64-bit version yet.

I had trouble updating Java with version 19 or 20, but was able to get this version installed http://www.filehippo.com/download_jre_32/7929/. If you only use the 32 bit version of IE you do not need the 64 bit version of Java as it only works on the 64 bit version of IE. My Java control panel app does not have an update tab. You can do a manual check for updates by going to the following location if the above file installs: “C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesJavaJava Updatejucheck.exe” Have not had trouble since. GL

        Hello @all

I have the same problem when i try to update or (i’ve already uninstalled it) to install Java – nothing happens.

I start the installation, have to confirm the UAC-Question and … nothing. At this moment you can also see a process with ProcessExplorer .. but this ends suddenly after some seconds – without any feedback.

I’ve played already with the compatibility settings (Vista/xp) – but it did not help.
The problem does not solve when i start Windows in safe mode.

        🙁

        Any ideas/suggestions?

PS: As developer i had already installed the Java sdk; maybe this is related somehow??!

I got Java working on my XP desktop and on the W & 64-bit laptop. Despite all efforts, I cannot get Java working on the W7 32-bit laptop at all. I removed all instances of the previous installation(s) and downloaded the latest full version of Java. When I start the .exex nothing happens as if W 7 or whatever simply ignores the executable. I have been looking for a solution to this behavior but cannot find any indication what the issue may be. There is no error message or anything at all. It is pretty frustrating.

After the uninstall, did you re-boot before trying the install?

After the uninstall, did you do any manual cleanup (i.e. remove any stray folders, check the registry, etc.)?

I found a solution. I’ve just installed the Java SDK (not the JRE). Voila … 🙂

        Hi! everyone,

I am also a member of Windows SevenForums, and in researching to see if anyone else had this problem I came across this thread started by MKR.

My solution followed a different path. After several tries with no success I located the Installer file on my system at C:Users******AppDataLocalLowSunJava, and left clicked directly on the file.

Within a few minutes I had 6.24 installed and verified.
I have not found yet, what difference it would make to start with a file within the downloaded Folder instead of the folder itself.

If any one would like to see my post it is located here

We have two Win7-64bit computers in the house. On one, both the Java 64-bit and the 32-bit (for compatibility) installed and seem to work fine. On the other neither version will install and I keep getting an:
Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%

We are running in Administrator mode!!!

Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%

This happened to a colleague at work when he connected to another machine via Remote Desktop and attempted to install the JDK on that remote machine. Apparently the way Remote Desktop was set up, it mapped a drive to his PC and Windows then reconfigured some settings.

Anyway, on the machine you are having problems with, open a Command Prompt and enter “set appdata” and post the result. Most likely, that setting is referencing a location across the network.
