I’ll wait for the push on my NAS and E5420.
My NAS and E5420 (both unsupported hardware) got the push last night after “Active hours”.
No hiccups.
For those who wish to migrate from Win11 22H2 to 23H2 offline,
there is an ‘enablement package’ KB5027397 but it’s not
available via the MSFT catalog for download.
Below are the direct MS download links for respective systems.
Ensure you click the correct one for your system.
PREREQUISITS:
kb5031455 from October 2023 or a later CU
before applying this enablement package.
Remember to create a system image before any major OS updates 🙂

KB5043049: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: September 10, 2024
..This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2012 R2
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2012
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2008 R2
Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Server 2008..
Why does Microsoft keep making these new Internet Explorer updates, Alex? WHY?
I can think of some reasons.
Back in 2016-2017, Microsoft was offering something called “Premium Assurance” which offered SIX additional years of support for Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Window Server 2008 R2 :
https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-to-offer-option-of-16-years-of-windows-server-sql-server-support-through-new-premium/
It has since been replaced with the ESU (Extended Security Update) program, which ended in January 2024 for the Server operating systems.
Apparently there were enterprise customers that bought into this at that time and Microsoft had to honor the terms of this offer. I believe that is why we are still seeing security updates (Naturally this includes updates to IE, included in the OS.) to Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 even after the end of the 4th year of ESU program.
Also, one of the Windows 7 variants called Windows Embedded POSReady 7 is still in the third year of the ESU, with support ending on October 8 2024 :
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-embedded-posready-7
This version of Windows 7 also has 32-bit and 64-bit versions and I believe that is also why we are still seeing updates to “Windows Embedded 7” right now. But after October 2024 I believe we will no longer see such updates and only updates to Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will still be available, up to January 2026 (end of the six additional years of support).
Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.
I don’t know why Microsoft is wasting programmers time on patching a dead IE horse.
Back when they decided to fully integrate IE into the Windows OS (in their attempt to force everyone to use it instead of other browsers) they tied pieces of its code way too tightly into other parts of the OS that didn’t even use it as a browser.
This was primarily so they could make the claim that removing it would break the whole OS.
Well, guess what?
Despite the fact they have replaced it with Edge and have disable it’s use as a browser, they did such a good job integrating it into the whole OS that new bugs in it’s code keep coming back to bite them and need to be fixed!
It’s also possible the upgrades are actually s-l-o-w-l-y replacing the integrated IE code til they can finally remove all of it from the OS; although that may take a l-o-n-g time since so many other parts of the OS still use some of it’s code!
Also remember, MS is still supporting through ESU, older versions of Windows that have IE more closely tied to the OS like Win7 and Win8.1, plus the Server equivalents. They have to provide security updates to those operating systems through EOS.
Updates today:
Three Win11 Pro 23H2 (x2 Win11 on ARM in Parallels VMs on M1 and M2Max Apple Silicon, x1 on a low end HP desktop with AMD based processor) to Build 22631.4169
MSRP (N/A on Apple Silicon)
KB5043076 2024-09 CU
Defender updates
Three Win10 Pro 22H2 (x2 Win10 in Parallels VMs on Intel based Macs and x1 on an old Dell XPS Studio 1340 laptop) to Build 19045.4894
MSRP
KB5043064 2024-09 CU
Defender updates
+ NO double restarts anywhere.
+ MSRT does not run on Win11 on ARM on Apple Silicon.
+ Big surprise: wushowhide worked correctly on both Win10 and Win11! I have downloaded WUMgr on all six installations, but as long as wushowhide continues to work, I prefer to use the native controller.
+ Haven’t taken the time yet to see what extraneous stuff MS installed. Will look when things settle down here.
+ Waiting for hurricane Francine to pass through before doing the Win8.1 updates. Maybe tomorrow or Friday.
Hi Susan:
Windows Update successfully installed all updates offered for the September 2024 Patch Tuesday on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop, and I haven’t noticed any problems so far. This includes:
There was a small glitch where my KB5043064 cumulative Quality Update appeared to get stuck at “Downloading – 0%” (serves me right for scheduling an update on Friday the 13th!), but a Windows restart solved the problem and the update session quickly ran to completion after that.
There is still no sign of Copilot in Windows in my taskbar, widgets on my lock screen, or any of the other new features that are supposed to be rolling out to Win 10 that I listed in my 14-Jun-2024 post # 2680565.
