I also highly recommend irfanview… fast, efficient, no bloat.

The only trouble I’ve had with it, is recently it seems to leave blank items in my taskbar. They look like regular tasks, but have no text in them. When you click on them, they disappear.

But it’s a great app, and well worth it!

      Ril,
These “blank items in my taskbar” are left there by a Very High graphic screen saver. Change to a standard Windows Screen Saver for a while and see if they go away.

If you do any work at all with graphics, you should have IrfanView on your hard drive. This fast, powerful, and totally free (for personal use) image viewer and multimedia player supports a ton of graphics formats, including multiple-image icons, animated .gif files, and multipage .tif files. IrfanView also lets you play audio CDs and many types of sound, animation, and movie files (including QuickTime formats). Its impressive feature set includes thumbnail creation, drag-and-drop support, fast directory viewing, a slide-show mode, and batch conversion. You’ll also find screen capturing, cutting/cropping, image effects, .dll and .exe icon extraction, file management, support for plug-ins, and more — all packaged in a small .exe file that requires no .dlls or runtime libraries. Check for updated plug ins at the IrfanView site if you update to latest version.

Latest version includes complete installation package and support for more graphics formats. The installer and de-installation notes are a major improvement from the prior 3.30 release.

The batch conversion function is particularly useful for creating optimized GIF or PNG graphics for web distribution. I use it to convert BMP(RLE) files from the freeware version of HardCopy to web graphics. Batch convert to GIF and PNG, and then choose which ever one is smaller.

The thumbnail option is great for browsing. With its wide support it gives you an explorer like interface and quick thumbnail previews of almost anything available.

With its integrated screen capture facility it might even replace HardCopy in my toolkit. But, need to test that first.

Odd. My version of IrfanView is 3.33, and there is a self-extracting exe that installs itself and gives you the option of associating it with numerous graphics and audio files. Also included are notes on how to uninstall. It’s still a brilliant piece of freeware. Get it.

            Hi Ian:

Have you associated all your graphic formats with IrfanView? If so, which extensions did you associate?
            Thanks in advance.

            • #1786041

Personally, I don’t like to change my file associations… except for Gif, that’s only because I severly dislike Microsoft Photo Editor.

              Hi DrkRealm:

Thanks for the tip. Just for my information, what do you dislike about Photo Editor. There are one thing it can do: You can extract bitmap images at high quality from Word 97/2000 via Microsoft Photo-Editor.

I copied this tip from DailyWordTips email group:

It just seems like a clunky program to me, I couldn’t ever get it to do what I wanted…

As for quality, I try to stay away from bmps in the first place, but if I need greater detail, I can printscreen and import to irfanview, then save as any format.. (irfanview supports tons…)

Of course, i’m biased, I was using Photoshop back in it’s 5.x days (As if that was a long time ago.. laugh), and am now using Paint Shop Pro… so it’s likely the lack of functionality I dislike about MS Photo Editor…

Thanks for the tip, I’ll likely use it only for that function if it ever arises… wink

            • #1786047

              Yes.

I used IrfanView|Options|Extensions to associate all supported graphic formats with IrfanView.

I use other programs for sound and video.

      • #1786048

Version 3.36 now available. Make sure you update both the software and the plugins.

        • #1787822

          Version 3.51 now available.

          • #1787824

hello Thank you Ian for update..going to Irfanview site to do my stuff…after I finish reading forums, of course grin

            • #1787826

Ian..I’ve had 3.51 for several weeks now..I just checked.. hmmn

          • #1787836

I loaded Irfan and associated everything. Now when I use it to look at a bmp ico etc the preview icon turns into that irvanview icon. I can’t figure out how to change it. And I don’t know what they were assocated with before. Something under Win98 or Officepro97.

If business is slow today maybe I can get a chance to work with it some and try the hints here.

            • #1787841

Why do you want to change it.

IrfanView gives you a consistent (pre)view capability of almost every graphic format available. The formats it does not support tend to be proprietary to a single application, eg. the XAR format is used exclusively by the XaraX drawing program.

It is designed to quickly support any new formats via it’s plugins.

It may however not be a capable enough image editor compared to other programs you have installed, eg. Paint Shop Pro. If that is the case, no problem. Just start that application and open the graphic file when you want to EDIT it.

Bottomline, I leave IrfanView as my default graphic viewer and in the infrequent case that I actually need to change a graphic, I use either IrfanView for basic edits or, some other more capable application if installed.

            • #1787848

I’m sorry to swim against the stream but I hate programs that highjack my extensions and I would never install IrfanView for that reason. That’s why I don’t use Quicktime either…

            • #1787849

Actually, IrfanView is very well behaved. During the setup process it brings you to an extensions association screen with initially NOTHING selected.

You then decide which, if any, of the file types you want associated. In my case, I select “Images Only” to select all the available image extensions, but, I could have left it as is.

Similar to PowerDesk. It asks me if I want to associate compressed file types with it. I answer yes because I want PowerDesk to my default ZIP,CAB,TAR etc. manager.

If you are not sure what you want to do. Just leave IrfanView with nothing selected and select Options|Properties from its menu later.

            • #1787854

PS: The above was tested using IrfanView v3.51 on a W98 system that had not previously had IrfanView installed.

            • #1787861

I’m with you Ian, I reckon its the best bit of freeware ever. I even use it to play mp3s as well. groovin

            • #1787865

OK after careful perusal of everyword in the help file I figured out what is happening. Irfanview is telling me that these files will open from Irvanview.

What I want to change is that I have a whole bunch of old icon files that are not named only numbered and I relied on the preview images to tell what they were now I have to click on them to see them. I also have several sailboat images which are only slightly different and they used to have a small preview icon showing the differences. Now I can’t see them all at once to compare them. Guess I can save them in one file to do that. I do have to admit that the click brings Irfan up instantly.

Anyway I am still working with it. At least I finally got one of my sailboats into a format that would load here. Looks like it is going to need some editing tho.

            • #1787866

Try using the Thumbnail viewer in IrfanView it gives you an explorer like interface with preview of the graphics..

I discovered that about the same time you were posting this. Learning more all the time.

I am looking for software that will change the dpi’s of a logo a coworker created. She used wordart and loves the look she got but her publisher needs it to be 300 dpi and it is only 96.

      • #1788871

FYI, there is a new group over at yahoo called irfanviewusers. It is new so not much traffic, but you can ask about the program and all the neat things they are making the thing do!
