• Office Click-to-Run update oddity

I have two desktop computers and a laptop running Windows 10 22H2 and Office C2R Family subscription.

Today I decided to update them, from Version 2408 (Build 17928.20114 Click-to-Run).

The update appeared to go normally on each machine, and on completion there was the usual message announcing a successful install.

However, the updated versions are different, dependent on machine.

On the first desktop done the updated version is Version 2409 (Build 18025.20030 Click-to-Run).

On the second desktop and the laptop, the updated version is Version 2408 (Build 17928.20156 Click-to-Run).

I’ve tried running the update again on the two machines still on Version 2408 (Build 17928.20156 Click-to-Run), but get the message “You’re up to date!”.

Does anyone know what might be causing this odd behaviour, and if there is a ‘fix’ for it?

      Hi AusJohn:

Version 2409 / Build 18025.20030 (rel. 09-Sep-2024) on the first desktop is the latest Current Channel Insiders Preview build – see the release history at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-current-channel-preview. The support article How to Get Microsoft 365 Insider Builds on Windows explains how you can check your Office account information to confirm this machine is on an Insiders Preview (early beta-testing) release channel.

Instructions for opting out of the Insiders Preview program can be found in the Microsoft 365 Insider Handbook. As noted there, you might have to wait for a few updates to be delivered before your build number shows that you’re back on the stable release for the “regular” Current Channel, which is currently at Version 2408 / Build 17928.20156 (rel. 10-Sep-2024) per the release notes at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/current-channel.

        Hi Imacri,

Thank you for all the information, and links to the various articles.

The first desktop, as well as the other two machines, are on Current channel but not Insiders Preview, as far as I’m aware.

This is a screen shot from the first desktop, and the others look identical.

        First-Computer

That’s why I was so surprised when I saw the different version after updating.

There is only one subscription for the 3 machines, so I would have thought that if one had somehow got onto the Insiders Program then they all would have.  I can’t imagine a user would join the program on a “per machine” basis; more likely IMO to be on a “per subscription” basis.

        Any thoughts on this?

          Hi AusJohn:

See Step # 3 of the Microsoft support article Join the Microsoft 365 Insider Program on Windows I mentioned in post # 2703904. Did you actually go to File | Account | Microsoft 365 Insider | Join Microsoft 365 Insider and then check to see if the checkbox labeled “Sign me up for early access to new releases of Microsoft 365” in the pop-up dialog box is checked? Once that check box is checked (enabled) there are two Microsoft 365 Insider channels you can choose from – “Beta” or “Current Channel (Preview)”, as explained in that support article.

On the first desktop that is currently at Version 2409 / Build 18025.20030 I’m guessing that check box is checked (enabled) and that the Choose Your Office Insider Channel dropdown box is set to “Current Channel (Preview)“. I don’t have Microsoft 365 installed but here’s an image from the July 2022 How-To Geek article What Is the Office Insider Program? showing what you might see:

            Hi Imacri,

Thank you again, this time for your followup comments.

I didn’t actually go to File | Account | Microsoft 365 Insider | Join Microsoft 365 Insider, but I have now.

And, the result appeared like this:

            Join-Microsoft-365-Insider

Which, by my reckoning, means that I’m not signed up to Microsoft Insider.

I’m sure that’s the case because I’ve never “knowingly” signed up to Microsoft Insider in any shape or form.

The other thing is, that I’ve been updating these same 3 machines, approximately monthly, for the past few years and this is the first time that they have been at different versions after updating.

From your remarks it sounds like you think that signing up to Microsoft Insider can be done on a “machine by machine” basis, rather than on a subscription basis; is that your impression?

If it is, could you briefly explain why?

My instinct (no hard evidence) tells me that joining Microsoft Insider would be on a subcription basis.

The picture below is from the July 2022 How-To Geek article What Is the Office Insider Program? that you quoted.

Surely, if I was in the Insider Program, then my screen capture (above, in response to your first reply) should look like it, but it obviously doesn’t.

              Hi AusJohn:

According to the support article Join the Microsoft 365 Insider Program that I mentioned in post # 2703904, as long as you have a Microsoft Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscription you can enroll in the Microsoft 365 Insider program. The main header for that support article also states “Note: Microsoft 365 Insider is installed on each device separately” so I assume any single device on your Family subscription can be enrolled in this program.

You would assume so, but that How-To Geek article is dated July 2022. Perhaps things have changed since then.

According to Prince R’s 16-Dec-2023 post in Ian Mosley’s Why am I receiving MS 365 Insider Builds without registering to receive them? you must check at File | Account and click the Update Options button. If you see “Office Insider” or “Microsoft 365 Insider” listed there then you are enrolled in the program.

Is it possible your “problem” Win 10 machine is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program at Settings | Update & Security | Windows Insider Program ? If so, see Ian Mosley’s 16-Dec-2023 Why am I receiving MS 365 Insider Builds without registering to receive them?.

NOTE: You will see a warning that you cannot enroll unless Settings | Privacy | Diagnostics & Feedback | Diagnostic Data is set to Optional Diagnostic Data

NOTE: Do NOT click the “Get Started” button shown above if you are not already enrolled as a Windows Insider. According to the Microsoft support article Join the Windows Insider Program and Manage Insider Settings opting out of this program is not straightforward and requires a clean installation of your Windows OS to remove buggy code if you enrolled in the Dev Channel or want to stop getting preview builds immediately.

If none of this helps and no one else following this topic has any further suggestions I’d advise you post your question in the Microsoft 365 Insider board of the Microsoft Answers board and see if anyone there knows how you could receive a Microsoft 365 Insider build without knowingly enrolling in either the Windows or Microsoft 365 Insider program. My own Microsoft Office 2019 C2R product has a perpetual (non-subscription) license and can’t join the Microsoft 365 Insider program, so my ability to help you troubleshoot is limited.

              Hi Imacri,

Thanks for all the time and effort that you’ve put into this thread; I can assure you that it is very much appreciated.

The further I get into this the more confused I get.

I’ve just spent about an hour responding to you, and suddenly when I edited it the whole lot disappeared.  Which means that I’ll have to go through it all again, so I’m afraid it will be a while coming.

You’re quite correct; I missed that.

Under File | Account I see:

              File-Account-on-Problem-PC

You’ll see it says “Join the Microsoft Insider program …”, which makes me think that I’m not enrolled in it.

Is it possible your “problem” Win 10 machine is enrolled in the Windows Insider Program at Settings | Update & Security | Windows Insider Program ?

Certainly possible, I imagine.  Here’s what I see when I check Settings | Update & Security | Windows Insider Program:

              You’ll notice it says:

To manage the Windows Insider Program settings for your device and
allow it to stay in the Windows Insider program, you’ll need to turn on
              optional diagnostic data.

If you don’t turn on optional diagnostic data, your device will stop
getting preview builds when the next major release of Windows
              launches to the public.

That seems to infer that I’m enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, but that I’m not receiving preview builds (of Windows), although I did receive a preview build of Office 365 Click-to-Run.

I think I’m in the same position as Ian Mosley 16-Dec-2023 https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/officeinsider/forum/all/why-am-i-receiving-ms-365-insider-builds-without/61400007-e34f-4dcd-a65a-043cdd5f0d05?page=1&messageId=274e37a2-8ac0-4551-8477-8e82a73759b5.

He finally concluded “and I believe this is a ‘fault’ with the insider programme“, and I have to say I’m in agreement with him.

Good idea, but I really don’t think I can face it right now.  I’ve had about as much as I can take, and have my doubts as to whether I would gain anything.

I only started the thread out of curiosity more than anything, because it’s – so far at least – an oddity, but not causing any obvious problems.

Once again, thank you for all the time and effort that you devoted to this; very much appreciated.

Apologies, but I don’t know what’s going on with my post; now it’s got lot’s more quotes than I thought I put in, and one of the screen captures isn’t showing.

I’m not game to edit it (again), for fear of losing the whole lot.

Your first desktop is evidently enrolled as a Microsoft 365 Insider in the Current Channel (Preview) level. The other two are apparently not part of the Insider program and are just Current Channel.

      Hi AusJohn:

Not necessarily. I’d suggest you go to Settings | Privacy | Diagnostics & Feedback | Diagnostic Data first and temporarily select Optional Diagnostic Data. That way Settings | Update & Security | Windows Insider Program should clearly show whether or not you are enrolled in the Windows Insider Program.
      ___________________________________________

Just FYI, my Win 10 v22H2 machine is NOT enrolled in the Windows Insider Program.

If I go to Settings | Privacy | Diagnostics & Feedback | Diagnostic Data and choose Optional Diagnostic Data then Settings | Update & Security | Windows Insider Program clearly shows I’m not enrolled. If I were enrolled there would be an option to “Stop Insider Builds” (i.e., not “Get Started” as shown below).

        Hi Imacri,

        Thank you, again.

It seems that, unlike me, you’re very patient and not easily put off. 🙂

I went to to Settings | Privacy | Diagnostics & Feedback | Diagnostic Data and temporarily selected Optional Diagnostic Data.  Then Settings | Update & Security | Windows Insider Program appeared as follows:

        Optional-Diagnostic-Data-Windows-Insider-Program

Which, from my understanding of the situation and what you’ve said, means that I’m not enrolled in the Windows Insider Program.

BTW, it says the following because I have TPM 2.0 disabled:

Your PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for
Windows 11. Your channel options will be limited.

According to Prince R’s post you need to click on the Update Options button to see if “Office Insider” or “Microsoft 365 Insider” is listed there.

As can be seen below, no “Office Insider” or “Microsoft 365 Insider” listed when I click on the Update Options button.

        File-Account-Update-Options

Now, with a lot of luck, I hope this post will be submitted without any problems.

      Hi AusJohn:

I also can’t see any evidence that you’re enrolled in either the Microsoft 365 Insider program or Windows 10 Insider program, so I have no idea why the M365 Insider Preview update released 09-Sep-2024 (i..e. the Version 2409 / Build 18025.20030 listed <here>) was installed on one of your computers.

However, I did find one other M365 Family subscriber who reported a similar problem, so hopefully it’s just a one-off glitch that affected a small number of users this month. See Jay Freedman’s post today in jayakay’s 14-Sep-2024 topic All of a sudden, Draft View doesn’t show Page Numbers in the MS Answers forum. I post in that MS Answers forum as user Great White North, and I stumbled across that topic while I was searching for other users who unexpectedly received an M365 Insider Preview build this month.

        Hi Imacri,

Thank you for yet another update to this ongoing saga.

I also can’t see any evidence that you’re enrolled in either the Microsoft 365 Insider program or Windows 10 Insider program,

Great, that’s what I wanted to hear.

so I have no idea why the M365 Insider Preview update released 09-Sep-2024 (i..e. the Version 2409 / Build 18025.20030 listed ) was installed on one of your computers.

        That makes two of us.

Sounds very similar to my situation.  Hopefully, as you say, it’s just a one-off glitch and won’t be a recurring “problem”.

Time to close this thread now, I think.  Maybe not exactly “solved”, but certainly well researched and discussed.

Again, thanks for all the time and effort that you’ve put into this discussion.

          *** Update ***

Last Sunday (22 September) I decided to try updating Office again, with the following results:

“Problem” desktop computer – updated to Version 2409 (Build 18025.20090 Click-to-Run)

Second Desktop computer and Laptop – got the message that they’re already up to date; remained on Version 2408 (Build 17928.20156 Click-to-Run)

No idea why one of the desktops is receiving unwanted Insider Preview builds when all ‘tests’ (documented above) appear to show it – as well as the second desktop and laptop – is on the stable Current Channel release channel.

      Hi AusJohn:

I still have no idea why one of your desktops is receiving unwanted Insider Preview builds when your images appear to show you’re on the stable Current Channel, and I haven’t found anyone other than Jay Freedman (who I mentioned in post # 2704609) who has reported the same issue.

If you want to continue troubleshooting I would permanently DISABLE your Fast Startup power option (see footnote below) and then try an Online Repair (not a Quick Repair) as instructed in the MS Support article Repair an Office Application. After your Online Repair finishes run a manual MS 365 update to see if you receive the latest “stable” Current Channel Version 2409 / Build 18025.20104 (rel. 25-Sep-2024) listed <here> in the Current Channel release notes. NOTE: the “stable” Version 2409 / Build 18025.20104 is a higher build number than your Insider Preview build Version 2409 / Build 18025.20090 (rel. 20-Sep-2024).

If an Online Repair doesn’t work you should be able to change your M365 update channel manually using an elevated command prompt with Administrator rights as instructed in the FMS article How to Change the Update Channels for Microsoft 365 Apps (see the section titled Change with Command Prompt). I personally would recommend you change to the slower Semi-Annual Channel (Susan Bradley has posted an excellent tutorial in the AskWoody forum at 7000001 Changing Microsoft 365 Click to Run to Slower Patching Channel that uses this command prompt method) but if you want all three of your computers on the same Current Channel I assume all you have to do is change the switch in those commands from /changesetting Channel=SemiAnnual to /changesetting Channel=Current per the FMS article.

NOTE: Changing the update channel via a command prompt only works for M365 so I can’t test this with my perpetual edition of MS Office 2019 C2R. You might want to post in Susan’s tutorial first before starting and ask if using “/changesetting Channel=Current” is the correct switch for moving back to the stable Current Channel.

In a worst case scenario you could do a complete uninstall and reinstall of MS 365 Family on your problem computer using the Office Uninstall Support Tool (see the section titled Running Repair Didn’t Help. Now What? in the support article Repair an Office Application mentioned above) but I assume you would be required to start your M365 configuration from scratch and recreate all your email accounts so you could view/send/receive emails messages again.

If you haven’t already done so, I’d also advise that you permanently DISABLE your Windows Fast Startup power option as instructed in Brink’s TenForums tutorial Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 (see <here> for Win 11) and then re-boot a few times to ensure the setting change takes effect. The Fast Startup power option (also known as hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) is enabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11 but it can sometimes interfere with the loading and initialization of drivers and services at boot-up and cause all sorts of unexpected glitches and problems with a wide range of programs, including Windows Updates. For example, see the Microsoft support article Updates may not be installed with Fast Startup in Windows 10.

        Hi Imacri,

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

I appreciate the time and effort that you’ve put into it, but I really don’t have the time and/or inclination to continue troubleshooting.

As I remarked earlier, I only started the thread out of curiosity more than anything, because it’s – so far at least – an oddity, but not causing any obvious problems.

It’s a bit of a case of “if it ain’t (badly) broke, don’t fix it”, from my perspective.

Everything is working OK now, and I worry that if I do the online repair or change the M365 update channel manually, that I’ll “break” something and be worse off.

          Hi AusJohn:

Sorry, your comments in post # 2706204 led me to believe that you wanted to resume troubleshooting.

For anyone else having this same Microsoft 365 issue, here’s one final suggestion. Go to Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update | Get the Latest Updates As Soon As They’re Available and make sure that setting is OFF.

          Win-10-Pro-v22H2-Windows-Update-Get-Latest-Updates-When-Available-27-Sep-2024

Under normal circumstances I don’t think unwanted MS 365 Insider Preview builds would be installed if that setting was ON, but it’s always possible there’s some glitch in the metadata for recent MS 365 installers that now incorrectly triggers the delivery of Insider Preview builds if that setting is ON and the user manually checks for MS 365 updates at File | Office Account | Update Options | Update Now (i.e., instead of waiting for the Click-to-Run system to automatically install available updates).

      Hi Imacri,

      Thanks for your latest comments.

Sorry, your comments in post # 2706204 led me to believe that you wanted to resume troubleshooting.

My apologies for that – quite unintentional.  It was only intended as an update for anyone who had been following the discussion, not a plea for further troubleshooting assistance.

Go to Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update | Get the Latest Updates As Soon As They’re Available and make sure that setting is OFF.

That setting doesn’t even show on the “problem” machine, presumably due to the fact that Windows Updates are disabled on it.
