• OE email sending suspended

My Isp suspended my email account because they think I send to many emails. When I explained my situation they tried to unsuspend me but everything they tried did not work. All settings are considered correct.

I can receive email but I cannot send.

They then referred me to MS.
MS wants $100 to solve the problem.

What I have tried so far –
    1. close OE and relaunch
    2. Do a computer warm reboot
    3. Do a cold reboot
    4. Cussed a lot

Can anyony tell me how to correct the suspended send email?

That issue is with you and your ISP….MS nor the email client (email program you use) has any thing to do with a suspended account. Also, I’ve never heard of an ISP suspending an email account due to the amount of emails being sent. Who is your ISP?

It is possible your Email account has been hacked and/or you are a Spambot. Many ISPs will suspend an Email account for sending too much Email for this reason. The first thing to do is to run a full scan using your antivirus app. Then download and run a full scan using Malwarebytes:
        http://www.malwarebytes.org.

You should also change your Email password.

Your absolutely correct and I agree with 99% of it….but the bottom line in this instance, the key phrase is “account has been suspended” which can only be done by the ISP. It doesn’t matter if his email account has possibly been hacked, this is the end result for their TOS, what ever it says and any actions that may apply to it. This is where are the red tape and leg work with the OP comes in to play, having to explain what is going on and any specifics on his part.

Your right in that it’s possible that his email account has been hacked and used as a bot to start spamming and all the advice you’ve given to correct it…I totally agree with.

I had done everything that was suggested with no results. I spent considerable time with my ISP over thw weekend but got nowhere because it was a weekend but they finally admitted that the problem was their fault and stopped my suspension today after costing me 4 days of being unable to communicate with my listees. Thanks for your efforts.

Some satellite based service providers will suspend your email account if you persist in flooding the transponders with mail.

The US Government can effectively suspend your account by issuing court orders to take down the commercial mail service you might happen to be using AND PAYING FOR – happened to me and 30,000 others at Lavabit.

Thanks for the quick responses. My ISP is Skybeam in colorado. I am in the mountains west of Colorado springs and until recently they were my only option. I have been with them for over 10 years. I have a large email list and send about 10 emails a day to all of them. This is not the first time that this has happened. Usually a phone call corrects the problem. However this time, they were unable to reverse the suspension. They blame the OE software for the problem. Also, they have switched to another system where the email is monitored by another company and I can not talk to that company directly. My computer is constantly monitored by various antivirus, antimalware etc software and I have had no other problems. The ISP tech support affirms that they did suspend me for volume, apologized and then were unable to correct the suspension. They blame MS & OE, naturally. I will rerun the programs you suggested and a couple more that I use periodically. My system , XP Pro, is old but has been properly kept current and has not had any other problems for a very long time. It still is infinately better than my wife’s new W7 computer. I will run my scans and report back by tomorrow.

One thing nobody has asked is:

        1. How large is your “large email list”? Why do you send 10 emails a day to all of them?

It is possible that you are being identified as a spammer even though you may not be spamming in the pure sense of the word as it has become known today.

      • #1440253

I would bet the “other company” is the issue and may have you on a spam or black list. If the ISP is not willing to talk to them about it, you’re hooped.
Others here have suggested simple tests to determine the source of the issue but what it comes down to is you’re exceeding a typical users emailing so the issue will come around again.

Long term, you’re going to want to either (as per other suggestions):
        a) migrate to a newsletter service like MailChimp. (first 2,000 subscribers free but limits on total emails x email addresses until you pay) Take a look at their pricing for an idea of what it would cost you. MadMimi starts with 2500 and has cheaper tiers.
        b) get your own domain and manage your email list there. Then its your new host providers limitations you’re dealing with. Some present unlimited but none want to be spammers so read the fine print. “unlimited” rarely is. You don’t want to just migrate your problem.

You could also try breaking up your list with multiple sends. That may set off the alarms less but the problem will still come up. If you show signs of spamming, the bots will shut you down automatically.

I’m not going to get too involved with the discussion, but would only like to ask why you seem to be running several antivirus & antimalware programs at the same time? Generally this is felt not to be a good practice.
And, too add another possible complication, you state that you are using XP-pro a pretty old OS that was even less capable of handling multi antivirus programs running together? I’m surprised that no one else has commented on this, even though it probably doesn’t have much to do with your email suspension.

If you want to see if you’re on a blacklist, go to whatismyip.com, note your IP address showing, and then select Blacklist Check from the top menu. Enter your IP in the box if it is not already there and click the Check Blacklists button. In a few seconds you’ll see if you’re on any of these blacklist sites. Interestingly enough I’m showing on two sites … although I don’t have any problems sending emails. Apparently however some spammer(s) had recently been spoofing my email address as I was getting a lot of bounce backs on spam messages that hadn’t been sent from me. That probably caused these listings.

About a year or so ago, we had an incident at work where we were not able to send outgoing email and when I contacted our ISP, I was told that our ISP wasn’t blocking our outgoing email but that we were on a black list apparently resulting from some malware or something that actually had sent spam from our network. When I attempted to track down the offending computer on our network, to my chagrin I found it was me! One of the blacklist sites (forgotten which) allowed me to view the offending email and turns out I had infected my computer by opening an email attachment but in my defense it did appear to be a legitimate attachment from a well known freight company. I’m normally careful with email attachments but this was a good one that was hard to spot. Anyway, antivirus/malware programs didn’t catch it and eventually had to roll back my computer to a date before I’d received the email to get rid of it. The ISP advised I had to notify the various blacklist sites that the problem was resolved to get off their blacklists. Some would drop us off the list immediately (with the warning that we would be back on if the problem persisted) and others took a few days of no spam activity before we were dropped off. It took nearly a week before the last blacklist dropped us. Fortunately our email service was back up before that time.

Anyway this story is probably irrelevant to your situation other than to check the black list sites but is a good warning to others about how much trouble one little mistake can cause. My little “indiscretion” with that attachment had shut down outgoing email for our whole company for a couple of days!

I use a separate company for my email. In this way, if I change ISPs, my email address won’t change.

Perhaps you could consider finding a new email provider.

Consider asking for a discount. It was their service, not your fault, that denied you their product.

Do a little sleuthing. I’m short on details here, so in no particular order:

When does the failure occur? Does Outlook refuse to connect to your SMPT server, or do your messages get rejected after the send is complete?

Has your ISP changed port settings, encryption or SMTP server names?

Have you exceeded disk space limits on their server? For example, is your junk mail folder, sent mail folder, or deleted items folder on the server loaded with thousands of junk messages?

Can you send a simple test message to yourself? If not, what error message does Outlook give you? Can you send out a message to a single recipient? Can you send out a message using a test distribution list with only one or two names in it?

What do you see in your Windows error logs?

How large is your distribution list and what version and what Service Pack of Outlook are you using? Prior to to Outlook 2007 SP2, there was a limit of 50 to 70 recipients in a distribution list. If you’re using an old XP machine, you might have an earlier version of Office, which means you’ll need to break your distribution list into smaller sizes.

Do you receive any bounce notices? If you do, look up the SMTP error numbers.

Is it possible you’ve been flagged as a spammer and blacklisted?

If you have control over your mail settings on the server end, what happens if you create a new secondary email address, add it to Outlook, and send out a test message?

Actually all (or nearly) ISPs have limits on the amount of emails that one can send. I have my own domains with Fatcow whose limit is 2000/day for a personal account. Check your terms of service. When I do a big email blast (5000+) on behalf of a group I belong to I give Fatcow a heads up before sending so it will make a temporary adjustment for me – Fatcow is very nice. I also use a professional email program GroupMail. In addition to all the good advice you’ve gotten I would strongly suggest you get your own domain (e.g. dean@deanvet.com) from a decent ISP company and use that for your emailing. You would use Skybeam only to connect to the internet; the email servers would be at the domain name’s ISP.

It sounds like the problem has already been resolved but I would like to offer another test you could have done.

It should be simple to temporarily install a copy of Thunderbird, attach to your email account, and send a test email. That should be all the proof you need to show that the problem is at their end.

Also, do they have an online web portal to their email? You could log on there and prove your account is locked from any other PC that could reach the web page.

    • #1440083

You may want to try somethign like Mail Monkey. You can setup lists and mail out directly without the email having to go through your ISP.

    • #1440131

sounds like they are using a bogus black list to decide to close you down
or someone upstream from them is forcing them to do it

i ahd that problem when i was teaching a class
had to cc about 40 students and my isp would not allow it
a phone call got that resolved as it was legit

another time my email got blocked because my main email isp
that relayed to my delivery isp had been hacked and got black listed
they finally fixed the problem but i was the one who got blocked (and presumably man yothers too)

otoh as someone said yo umay have a bot that is sending out too many emails
so run mbam pro and clean the system up
but a phone call to the isp should get an honest answer so you know the real reason

      get another isp
i connect to a separate one using my high speed fios link
but can also get to them via dial up in an emergency
you do not have to stay with that isp if they wont work with you

My Isp suspended my email account because they think I send to many emails. When I explained my situation they tried to unsuspend me but everything they tried did not work. All settings are considered correct.
