Installed KB4493448 and KB4493435 manually, rebooting after each install. Slow installs, but they eventually succeeded.
Ran Windows Update, and was offered this month’s “Rollup” and next month’s “Preview” – hid both.
Only KB890830 (MSRT) remained which installed/scanned without incident.
Overall, this was one of the smoothest updates in recent memory, but then again, I don’t use one of the affected anti-virus programs.

GuestMay 3, 2019 at 4:31 pm #1257312b, technically you are right. AV does update in the background. But many of us are like Woody and more skeptical or suspicious as to why an update is forthcoming. I check for AV defs and program updates daily, and NO program update came through. However, the behind the scenes emergency patch did come in totally unannounced and was not known until a reboot was performed. Those of us here being suspicious, are more so when that happens and would like to see either a notice of the impending update, or an actual place (for techies) to go, download and install it themselves.

Most of my win7 machines were patched before MS stopped the patches for Avira machines.
I haven’t seen any issues, thankfully.But all I’m seeing via WU is the 2019-03 preview MQR, not the proper April patch
when trying to patch a machine today (and this is the way it has been since 4/12).MS still hasn’t updated:

I’m not running Win 10 and never will but to satisfy my curiosity… is it “normal” for a newer update to have a lower KB number than the previous one? That seems a bit odd to me.

AskWoody PlusMay 3, 2019 at 3:35 pm #1256134If you have Dell Support Assist and it was either automatically updated on or after April 23 to v3.2.0.90 or higher, or if you manually updated it to v3.2.90 or higher, make sure you check your Windows update settings!! They might have been changed to Download and install automatically (Paraphrase)!!!
Woody always says to check WU settings before patching, so you should be OK but make sure to check.
My settings were changed to total automatic install. I don’t know if it was because of the automatic Support Assist update on April 23 or because Support Assist immediately ran after the update and cleaned up the hard drive. I don’t normally let Support Assist do anything, but I was called away from my computer and when I came back the update had already occurred and the cleanup was in progress so I just let it go. Today is the first time since that update that I’ve checked WU settings, and I was surprised that they had been set to automatic. (I’m the only one with access to my computer.)

AskWoody PlusMay 3, 2019 at 9:10 pm #1265097A quick follow-up for my Win 7 Pro SP1 x64 Group B: installed the April IE 11 (KB4493435) and Security Only (KB4493448) patches in that order without incident with a restart after each. All seems well, although I did get 2 shutdowns after hitting the restart button on the Security Only patch (which is new to me although not, apparently, to some others here).
Also, I see an exclamation point next to ‘Shut Down’ when I click on the start button. That never happens after I install patches with my Windows Update set to ‘check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install’ even when I haven’t hidden the monthly Rollup in Windows Update. Hopefully the exclamation point is just an anomaly.

I installed both of them on several x64 computers without doing a restart in between them and I was wondering which one caused it. I haven’t installed them on a 32 bit system yet but there have been times in the past that the 32 bit systems didn’t do that second restart.
For the record that second restart is indeed fairly common and I’ve questioned it here previously but I never got an explanation as to what actually causes it. Sometimes after the second restart the progress percentage appears again during the “preparing to configure Windows” message and sometimes it doesn’t.

Installed April’s updates; Servicing Stack KB4490628, SHA2 KB4474419, IE KB4493435 and SO KB4493448 today.
From the catalog; installed SS KB4490628 1st, SHA2 KB4474419 2nd, IE KB4489873 3rd, SO KB4489885 4th and MSRT (from WU) last.
Installed one at a time. Rebooted in between each update letting it sit 1 minute or 2 after update was installed.
No network issues. No oddities – other than slow boot one time.
Rebooted 4 times and let it sit for several minutes. (Reboot 1 was slow, about 2x as long.)
I would recommend people on the last reboot to go to the desktop and let it sit 45 to 60 minutes to Process Idle Tasks and let the trusted installer (as per PKCano) do its thing.

Today I have followed the same order of updates you did, except for the first one, that I had installed last month. Additionally, after doing the SHA-2 update, I created a restore point before installing the next two, IE11 and Security Only. Once those were done, I installed three Office 2010 updates and the MSRT, all four offered by Windows Update (I had already hidden the Rollup and Preview updates). After each install (but the last one, that did not require a reboot), once I had logged in again, I let the system run until the indicator light of the HD had stopped shining; that usually took several minutes.
The one thing that was different from all my previous patching, was that now I have the PC with Windows 7 in dual boot with Linux Mint. I was not sure how that was going to go. What happened is that, once the shutdown part of the reboot was completed (with the usual messages that the updates were being installed and not to turn off my computer), instead of Windows 7 coming up again, I got the dual boot dialog, to choose Windows or Linux. So I chose to boot with Windows and crossed my fingers. What happened next was that the second part of the Windows reboot took place, with the usual messages to the effect that the install of the updates was being completed. Then I logged into my Windows session with my password, and was finally back to seeing my usual desktop.
After doing some tests, it seems that everything is working normally.

You choose Windows, and the Windows boot or the completion of pending updates, proceeds normally. I rarely have any complications with this arrangement. Just make sure Windows Fast Startup is not enabled (default is enabled, and it’s under Power Plan Advanced Options) if you are sharing any NTFS partitions between Windows and Linux.

Right click on any of the exe files with the most recent date and then on the Details tab. I don’t know which of the exe files is the actual program, but they all—for me at least—show the same number (15.0.45.1203, on my machine).

When I ran WU, it didn’t offer the April monthly roll-up. I guess MS is still throttling offering it to systems with Avira. That’s not a big deal for me since I just hide it anyway being in Group B.

I normally have the metered connection set on my Home version, but it’s been off for a while now in hopes I’ll get the 1803 to 1809 upgrade automatically. However, I’ve had nothing since KB4346084 on April 21.
Is there any feedback from other Home owners who have actually tried the “Check for updates” route? We’ve all been warned against doing it for so long, it would be interesting know what the majority experience has been, assuming there are some who aren’t on their way to the store to buy new computers . . .

ManagerMay 4, 2019 at 7:01 am #1279840Be patient and wait for 1809 to come to you instead of “seeking.” MS rolls out the upgrades first to computers which its AI says are least likely to have problems (smirk!). It also blocks computers which it feels will have problems – example: the recent BSODs caused by AVs.
As long as you are getting 1803 CUs, MS is probably looking at your computer and not offering it to you for a reason.
If you need to use your computer as your daily driver, don’t be a “seeker” unless you have a current computer image, you have backed up your data, and you are knowledgeable enough to get yourself out of a jam.

Neither, because of what I do I click the Learn more link on the Updates page and download both the x86 and x64 files and store them on the same Bootable USB Thumb drive I used the MCT to create. 16GB is plenty to save the last 4 files, the bootable part gives a choice of either 32-bit or 64-bit as I may need with clients. Installing from those files avoids the vagaries of slow Internet connections.

All Office 2010 important updates installed fine. No problems, will post again if anything weird pops up. Running Norton AV and there were no issues there. The Nag update KB4493132 shows up Optional “Recommended” and I have that hidden. Installed KB4474419 (SHA2) with last month’s March updates. All is well at this point.

When I booted up today, Sunday, Windows Error Reporter popped up with information about my blue screen error. But the thing is, I never had a blue screen error!I rebooted again, and everything working fine. Weird huh?

2 – downloaded Updates KB4493448 (Apr. SO) and KB4493435 (IE11 Apr. Cumulative)
3 – installed each Update and then rebooted; waited 15 minutes
4 – checked “Windows Update” => 5 Important (all checked): 3 Office 2010 and 2 Win 7; 1 Optional: unchecked
5 – unchecked and hid “Important” Update KB4493472 (Apr. Rollup)
6 – hid the unchecked “Optional” update KB4493453 (Apr. Preview Rollup)
7 – checked “Windows Update” again => 4 Important: 3 Office 2010 and 1 Win 7: all checked
8 – unhid 0 hidden updates to install
9 – installed 4 Updates: 3 Office 2010 (KB4462230, KB4462223, and KB4464520), plus MSRT (KB890830)
10 – rebooted; waited 60 minutes (until the hard drive light stopped flashing)
Note: no need to reconfigure Windows Media Player!!

@anonymous, thank you very much! To answer your question: when I find an update (good or bad) that I do not want to install, I will hide it. For example, if I have not installed April’s updates before the 2nd Tuesday of the following month (May), and I now check ‘Windows Update,’ there will be 2 months’ worth of updates (depending on supersedence). So I will hide the new (May) updates prior to installing April’s.Once I’ve installed April’s updates, and after I’ve rebooted and waited, I will unhide any ‘good’ updates for May that I had hidden earlier => to make sure that they will be available when I check ‘Windows Update’ after the all clear is given for May.
I’m sorry I hadn’t seen your question earlier, and I hope this answers it.

Offered and installed March SU (KB74419), April RU (KB4493472) and Apr MSRT 830. Installed one at a time with reboots and plenty of wait time between each. After IMPORTANT queue was “empty”, the SSU (KB4490628) showed up upon a WU recheck. Installed it and rebooted yet again. 6 hours later and all seems well. Did not loose WMP functionality. WooHOO!!

Several machines (win7Pro 64) install and then does the 30% and restart and works their way up to 100% at which point the machine shuts down and restarts back to configuring Windows. It takes some time then gets to 35 % (first and only figure) and then the sign in screen. On sign in after the welcome screen a black screen with box in upper left hand corner updating desktop update.
The double boot and desktop didn’t seem to appear on Win7 Home Prem 64 on two machines, the other has happened on machines with either AMD or Intel processors.

Caught me by surprise, but it has happened before. Just guessing, but when this happens, I always assume that it had to update something in two steps, with a reboot required in between.

I went ahead and downloaded the update from WU catalog- do you suggest i try installing it that way?

But image your computer first, and do a separate file backup of your User data.
Make a restore point before you start a manual install
Be sure you have a rescue disk available to boot and uninstall the update or do a system restore if you ave a problem.I’m just being cautious.

Installed the April rollup, KB4493472, on our 2 laptops today without problems, after making image backups of both, of course.
One system is Windows 7 Home Premium with Kaspersky. I installed the rollup first on it, restarted, and let it sit a while to calm down; everything looked good. Then I installed the Office 2010 updates.
The other laptop is Windows 7 Ultimate with Avast version 19.4.2374 from April 9. Referring to the Avast knowledge base article about the problem, I checked the registry to confirm that this laptop had gotten the “emergency update,” since that appears to be the only way to make sure you have the update. Then I installed the rollup separately as usual and restarted without problems. As I get time I will install the Office 2013 updates on that machine.

Group A Win7 x32 starter, i have Avira free (version 15.0.45.1214) installed, yet i am still not being offered the April rollup. Avira states this issue is fixed, so why the heck are Microsoft still blocking it??? Have they just not removed the block, or is there still a problem here? I’d prefer to stay in group A and not go looking for updates from the catalogue.
Anyone else still having this problem? If it’s not one thing it’s another……

Have recently been in contact with Avira support and they have, so far, just asked me to uninstall and re-install the software. I followed with the ‘support collector’ which is supposed to reveal any problems the re-install didn’t fix. Not that I had any outside of not getting the April rollup. So, I am waiting to see the outcome of the Avira report and will go from there.
I have already downloaded the update from MS so i can update manually, but it would be nice if we could get a definitive answer from both MS and Avira. Very frustrating.

The next patch Tuesday is fast approaching and if April’s rollup fails to appear I’m wondering if the subsequent one will or won’t show up either. Being in group A and wanting to stay there, I’m hoping something will get fixed pretty quickly. I’ve used Avira for years and really don’t want to change.
I’m guessing that there are alot more people than us out there with this particular problem!

GuestMay 10, 2019 at 11:16 am #1511921Hey rhp52, just to let you know that my Avira version has just updated again, from 15.0.45.1214 to 15.0.1905.1249. I have run windows updater, but still the April rollup fails to make an appearance.
Curious as to why it’s still being blocked… I am reluctant to install it manually incase there is a reason for the ongoing block.
