• Mirror laptop to Smart TV

I have just purchased a 65″ Samsung LED Smart TV and I would like to wirelessly MIRROR my laptop screen to this TV. I have looked at Chromecast and Miracast, but they are mainly for smart phones. My laptop has a 10″ screen and I would like to mirror my laptop to my TV screen, via a wireless network, so when I am working on a Word or PowerPoint presentation, I can see it on the new 65″ display!

Any solutions?

Thank you,

Sharkey

Sharkey,

Give Chromecast another look. Google on these terms: chromecast mirror pc monitor
HTH

Update: I just tried this and I’m wirelessly viewing Excel on my 42″ Samsung TV using ChromeCast!

From what I have read all over the net and via youtube, Chromecast will display Movies, Music, their apps, and the web browser Google Chrome, but I have been unable to find anything about mirroring just the computer screen. If you know something different on how to accomplish this, please let me know and I will spend the $35.00.

Sharkey,

I used the first Google result from the terms above to view this video and it worked as stated. HTH

You might be disappointed by wireless lag time or if you lower the stream quality so the lag isn’t so bad, of course the picture is going to suffer all the more, exactly where and when you would like it to be perfect for such a large screen.

I don’t suppose you have an HDMI port on the laptop though. That’s the way to go if you do, its instant and as high quality as it can get (unless you have a 4K TV). The trade off for perfection is the long HDMI cable.

F.U.N.,

It worked just fine at highest streaming setting on my 42″ TV. Granted the OP has a 65″ monster but ChromeCast is so cheap (I paid $29 for mine) that it’s worth a try for the wireless freedom IMHO. HTH

Hello RetiredGeek

My daughter just bought me a (used out of the box) Vizo smart TV. Suppose to have wifi, netflix, huluplus etc…..
My problem is I can see my wifi connection and all 4 bars are green but it is locked no matter how many times I enter the password it will not unlock. What could I be doing wrong? Or is it the TV?

Chromecast can take whats on your computer screen and put it on the TV. Any special gimmicks. Is it using USB 3.0 port or HDMI. I think I have 1 HDMI on my laptop.

Thanks RetiredGeek for any help you can give me on my 2 questions.

Do you get 1080P? The video I watched suggested setting it to 480P if lag or buffering, which seemed to imply it was only starting at 720P. A computer screen looks pretty bad at 720P on a big screen, video still looks ok though. I use the big screens for all sorts of computer interaction so it just might be I’m too much of a stickler on this subject as well. For occasional use it’s probably no big deal.

No I think it’s only 720p but it is easy on the eyes in Excel which is what the OP was interested in. HTH

I don’t know honestly, it’s a long way to stretch so few pixels over so much area. Any way to try before you buy?

Remember that you have to view your TV from it’s optimal viewing distance. If you get up close of course it is going to be grainy. HTH

Will Chromecast work with other brands of TV? I have just got a Sony Bravia Smart TV – 55″ was as big as my budget would go….!

I would like to share both my laptop screen, or an iPad / iPhone on the screen…. how would I go about it without going out to buy another device like AppleTV..?

Thanks

Chromecast does and will work on any TV! I purchased a book called “UNLOCK the power of your CHROMECAST” (February 2014 edition) by Aaron J. Halbert, and he “shows the way” to get ALL of the benefits from the Chromecast device! Well worth the $8.00!

Well, any TV with a spare HDMI port right?

• #1442477

Of course. Additionally, if you have a home theater system (or a newer DVD player) with an open HDMI port, this can work as well!

This may not be what people have in mind here but it works and comes with many extra’s. Get an android TV stick. Works with any TV with HDMI. Makes a smart TV even smarter because it becomes an android TV. You need a flymouse or wireless keyboard and or mouse with it for control or an app for your android smart phone for example. Anyway plug the stick into an HDMI port on your TV. Plug the the stick into the power adapter and voila get any app from the play store. Use vlc media player on your PC and use vlc direct pro (its free) on your android stick on TV. The app tells you what to do and it is easy. No need to set up a sharing folder, just browse through your PC, even external hard drives and play any video. There are many other streaming apps that do this or other things. Android sticks are like chrome cast plus anything android play store has to offer. There are some fast sticks out there with 3D even. Most are at least full HD. So that’s my solution. Got it for my parents so they can Netflix and fb and get any app they want and stream. Hope this helps.

Very interesting. I just got a Roku3, and it seems to be a Wifi hotspot on its own. I think that it communicates with its remote by WiFi instead of infrared or bluetooth. So I wonder if Roku might be able to show my laptop screen on the big TV. Does anyone know about that? Thanks.

I have a 40″ Samsung Smart tv which only has an Ethernet socket, so no wireless that I know of, but had considered getting a longer HDMI cable to check it out with my laptop.

So far, I’ve only used the Ethernet connection (from router) to upgrade the firmware when I first got it as that is the way it has to be downloaded.

Glendad,

The Chromecast plugs into an HDMI connector or your TV. You use the Chromecast software in conjunction with the Chrome Browser on your computer to connect to the Chromecast device via your Wireless network, you only have to switch your TV to the correct HDMI port where the Chromecast is plugged. I forget the exact setup procedure but it was brain dead easy. HTH
