A long time ago when the Lounge was new, our wish list included having the Lounge posts with Reply, Thanks and Quote buttons in the header row of each[See the full post at: Minor Lounge Button Tweaks]

    UPDATE:
The feedback received has been firmly on the idea that the header buttons should be in the footer, and vice versa. So we’re going to give this a try – Reply, Thanks and Quote in the Footer, with Report in the Header.
    Keep that feedback coming, please!

Nearly reported a post I wanted to thank! Good job I read before clicking. 🙂

With all due respect, I’m for keeping the “Thanks” button below the message.  Placed between Reply and Quote is a mismatch imo.  But, no big deal.

        @CBA something like this layout?
        use your imagination 🙂

I’d agree that if the post warrants a QUOTE, REPLY or THANKS, it’s logical that these are placed on the footer after reading the entire post. As is, REPORT next to the post number in question is also logical.

My preference would be to keep “Edit”, “Reply”, “Quote” and the “Post #” on top and to keep “Thanks” and “Report” on bottom.

In other words, post-message manipulators on top and special actions on bottom.

It took a while to find these buttons as they are nothing but text to the eye ball.

1, Now all we need is a “READ ALL” button.

2, When going to a thread with a new post, one has to scroll to the new one. Some threads are several pages long!

There’s a button on the end of each link to a thread with new posts. Click on that and it takes you to the first new post.

When going to a thread with a new post, one has to scroll to the new one. Some threads are several pages long!

Searching for all ‘new’ posts (black tags) since your last visit to a topic:

        1. Once on that topic’s page, hit ctrl-F and a search box will open in the lower left corner of your monitor (in FF & WF).
        2. With the new button arrangement, type “te n” (without the quotes) into that search box.
        3. You’ll notice the number of matches, and you can click on the ^ or v arrows to move from ‘new’ comment to ‘new’ comment. There are additional options to the right of the box as well.

If there are no ‘new’ comments since your last visit, that box will be filled pink.

I’m confused by the thread title, there are no buttons, I only see hyperlinks. Should these ‘buttons’ be visable, Is there a problem with my browser?

    • #2326035

For me, it makes more sense to have all these “actions” under the message because you can only reply, thank, quote or report a post after you’ve finished reading it. Anyway, it’s just a matter of getting used to the new layout.

As a suggestion, could it be possible to make the separation between posts more noticeable? A darker horizontal line, for instance, could make it easier to realize at a glance if an action applies to the previous or the following message.

The contrast on the header and footer rows has been an issue from day one, especially for those with sight problems. Changing it is on the same list as the button changes, but sadly, we currently have to wait for a theme revamp. Changes cost money, so are done on a needs-must basis.

Changes are going on in the wings, but there’s no telling if or how soon this might happen. It is our fervent wish to get the color of the header text and background more visible 🙂

(Ok, small screen issue, but I still appreciate that part)

      • #2326199

Funny, as the one thing I was concerned would be annoying is having to scroll back up to quote or reply, as I’m going to finish reading the post before doing either.

4 users thanked author for this post.
        • #2326285

That could depend on the length of the post, certainly, and the device it was being viewed upon 🙂

          • #2326499

I see that an “online’ vs “offline’ indicator was tried for a while, I have no opinion regarding that but it might be useful for some.

I would REALLY like to be able to highlight a quote and hit the reply BY the quote to get that quote and index in the reply box. I realize that the software in use is very limiting but it would be nice.

I would also like the function ‘new posts since last visit’ to be useful more than once a day. Not to hammer a dead horse but I miss the unread posts option from Windows Secrets.

Completely agree.  Reply, Quote, Thanks only make sense after reading the post.  And delineation is often not given the prominence it needs.

You have to read the post to Report it, yes, that’s correct. But the reason to put Report on a separate group of links (or buttons) is, in my opinion, to avoid clicking on it by mistake when you just want to Thank or Reply.

Well, we now have the tools to make those wanted changes, which have just been activated.

Kirsty, does it mean that now you can fix things like “the trigger happy spam filter” and similar big nuisances, were these to occur? Because, if as a result of now having those tools, you and some others here can do things like that, then the sentence quoted above would not be just good news, which it is, but also more than that: truly great news.

The tools to change the header and footer row settings are in no way connected with the spam filter, or “big nuisances” that may occur from time to time. Sorry to disappoint!

Oh, I thought the “box” was that big thing for writing the report on Charlie’s transgressions that “then appeared” (not my words) right below Charlie’s comment when clicking on ‘REPORT’. So, most logically, I was looking for “Cancel” somewhere down there! Thus I missed the thing on top. Never mind that. What now matters is that we all have learned a useful lesson today and Charlie has got the answer he so anxiously had asked for!

Generally speaking, considering that I am a so very, very old (hint: I am, supposedly, so old as to be placed in the very second group scheduled to get the shots!), I have had no serious problems with the previous, or have them now with the present arrangement of the buttons. Even with my undoubtedly shrunken brain and many other deficiencies proper of my extremely advanced age, I still seem to be able to find my way to comment in AskWoody with considerable ease, in spite of this fast-evolving button situation. So, please, Kirsty: don’t you worry about me. I’m good. I’m good.

“…give this a try – Reply, Thanks and Quote in the Footer, with Report in the Header.”

There are many ways to cut a pie and I can live with the above although my preference would be to keep Edit next to Reply in the footer and Thanks all the way right: Edit | Reply | Quote | Thanks.

The separators should be grey and perhaps also be added between Report | Post# on top.  Of course, all imho.

1 user thanked author for this post.
      • #2326643

We can’t add separators, sorry. Re the color, already discussed above.
And we have no control over the order in which the buttons are displayed, only whether they are in the header or the footer.

    • #2326635

It is much better now IMHO with the Reply | Thanks | Quote on the bottom. The report button I have no opinion on, I have never used it and likely never will. (like most folk)

I would note that for the last at least week maybe more, clicking on an attached image loads fast and clicking back subsequently in my browser goes back to the original page very very quickly. 🤩👍 I used to have to wait a few seconds. Maybe the new server arrangement??

In a Mac one has a shortcut to achieve that without to having to scroll all the way to the top or the bottom of a file or a Web page, same in Linux. So there has to be a couple of shortcuts in Windows 10 to go to the top or the bottom of a file or a of Web Page. In Win 7, if I remember correctly, those were “Ctrl+Up key” and “Ctrl+Down key.”

To find out, Google something like:  scrolling, Windows 10, top bottom of page.

I would like the “Cancel” button to remain visible, of course only to the author of the post, to allow for cancellation after submission. I have, in two occasions, posted a comment that later on I realized was incorrect, but the opportunity to delete it using “Cancel” was no longer available.

And just now I have noticed that the “Cancel” button is, in fact not available at all before posting a comment or editing it: it is simply gone.

“Cancel” and “delete” are not the same thing.
Cancel” refers to the submission – you can submit the content you have typed in the entry box, or you can cancel (ie, not submit) the content of the entry box.
Delete” refers to an content of an already submitted entry, and you cannot delete something you have already submitted.

PK: I am OK with not deleting my already posted comments, because  there are other ways to correct a wrong comment already made, even if they are not entirely elegant. But “Cancel” was missing before submitting a comment the first time, when I then wrote that it used to be next to “Submit” and it was no longer there or anywhere else I could see.

Now I’ve noticed, while writing this, that the “Cancel” button is back again, next to “Submit”, as it has always been the case until now — and I hope it stays there.

I’ve seen the thread. You can read there that there are others that also have this problem on askwoody only – nowhere else. Which may be due to Wordfence falsely determening a certain vpn-ip address as being crooked, and not updating their databases.

How did you post? Change IP, retry?

What error message did you get?

          cheers, Paul

          • #2335849

I cannot change my ip. I posted and it worked.  But the 2nd time I tried to post, blocked!  I called my isp, they have no clue.  Only way for me to change my ip is to get a new modem.

And now 3rd time, this works.  Seems intermittent.

Your IP is not tied to your modem, it’s assigned by your ISP.

Without the error message we can only guess.

              cheers, Paul

            • #2335858

ISP says ip is hardcoded in the modem.  Sorry what error message are you referring to. If this posts, it seems to be working now……

            • #2336096

ISP says ip is hardcoded in the modem

They were paraphrasing so you understood the IP is set for you and cannot be changed.

              cheers, Paul

It was not your IP# that got your post blocked. Your post was blocked when the firewall (rightly or wrongly) prevented you from what it detected to be as uploading script with potential to damage the website.

Each pageload block appears to have been for the same thing, and the following pageload worked fine.

This kind of script alert can come up when attempting to embed content, such as tweets.

I’ve seen the thread. You can read there that there are others that also have this problem on askwoody only – nowhere else. Which may be due to Wordfence falsely determening a certain vpn-ip address as being crooked, and not updating their databases.

That is correct, fully. One must be able to connect through VPN. See the many publications of the security firms and various NCSC organisations. It simply is an extra to provide more security for  the users on the internet.

      * _ ... _ *
      • #2331674

Unfortunately, many VPNs are used by those trying to evade security for criminal purposes, and this creates major issues for many innocent customers trying just to be safe.
Free VPN suffer most from this problem, but it is also a major problem in paid services as well.

In the meantime, this thread is entirely off-topic!

Not too long ago, we used to be able to delete a post within a certain amount of time after posting it. We can no longer do this, needing the help of the admins to delete a post instead.

Is there a way to bring back the limited time frame to delete a post so we can do so without bothering the admins?

Case in point, today I was composing an answer to a person’s question, and while I was doing quick research and composing the answer, PK posted the very same answer I did, but I didn’t find out until I had already posted mine. The times on the posts were about 7 or 8 minutes apart, making it look as if I had posted after reading his, which I didn’t do.

The above paragraph is why I’d like to be able to delete a post right after posting it, in case it’s a duplicate of something someone else says before I get a chance to finish composing my post. I’m not exactly the fastest typist around, nor am I the slowest, but, still, while we’re composing a post, the page doesn’t update to reflect that someone else has added a post until after we hit the “Submit” button at the bottom, and I don’t want to duplicate a post if I can avoid it.

BTW, the post was deleted, so no duplicate post now exists.

No, that can’t be brought back. It only disappeared as an option when it stopped being a provided option in the platform we use.

However, while it was in action, it was being abused by Loungers, which caused a moderating nightmare on occasions. If you do need a post trashed, reporting it is the easiest way (some Loungers choose to delete the contents while the editing timeframe is still open, then report to request the trashing).

If you do need a post trashed, reporting it is the easiest way…

By using the “Report” link at the top of the post in question?

The wording that appears after clicking the “Report” link says

Use this only to report spam, harassment, fighting, or rude content.

I wouldn’t think that a duplicate post (saying the very same thing as another poster) would fall within those guidelines.

That’s why I DM’d a known admin to have the post removed instead.

Thanks for the tip on what some Loungers do by deleting the text of the post, saving it, then asking for it to be removed. Sounds like that technique saves someone else from responding to a post that will eventually be deleted, which would be a waste of their time.

If we had control over that wording, it would include wording like “personal attacks” instead of fighting 😉
I understand your reticence to use the Report button “just” for trashing. However, with so many already doing it, we certainly don’t mind.

The problem with a DM is that it only goes to one person, who may not be online for quite a while.

Very much so – and that saves us work (much appreciated!).

Kirsty, I have never asked to have a comment deleted by using “report”, but might in the future, hence my question: How do MVPs know that the person “reporting” to ask that his or her comment be deleted is really the author of the comment? I suppose you have a way to tell.

We find that out when we investigate. It’s usually part of the comment added to the report anyway 🙂

The report doesn’t tell you who’s made it automatically?

            • #2335988

It does tell you who made the report, but not who made the reported post 🙂

            • #2335991

But you get the link to the post number, so you get both in effect.

I was confused by your “It’s usually part of the comment added to the report anyway”.

Most reports say “please delete my” (when requesting to delete), as opposed to reporting a concern in another’s post. The wording is very often telling, before we go to the mentioned post.

One problem with deleting a comment one has made and then changed ones’ mind about, is that, by then, people may have replied already to it with their own opinions. If the initial posting that caused those replies is deleted, so are all the replies. Sometimes this might not matter, but at some other times the successive linked comments might have brought something interesting with them that by “cutting off the head” would be lost forever.

One may reply to one’s problematic comment oneself, to explain what is wrong about it, so others do not wast time criticizing the comment for the very reason one would like to have deleted it. It is the right thing to do, if nothing else.

Only if that “comment one has made” is a new topic will it delete the replies. In the case of a reply, the deleted reply causes all the subsequent replies to be unthreaded, making a total mess of the topic, when it happen in large topics.

For the wish list: I’d like to have the ability to preview a post before it is submitted.

      • #2334841

Been on the list since about, oh, week 2 of the Lounge (nearly 4 years). It’s not something the stock-standard platform software permits (you’ve heard it here before – customizations cost $$$), but would be enormously helpful – agreed!

        • #2334850

Aren’t these two recommended plugins free?

Neither of these are easily discoverable in the BBPress official plug-in library, and neither are current.

As they are not tested to run on the current platform, and the risk of conflicts with the other plug-ins we are using, I’d not recommend trying them at this point. One also requires a platform we don’t use.

If you can come up with a current, tested, appropriate option, we could check for known conflicts.

@Kirsty, any chance that we could have an Underline toggle on the message-box toolbar?

      • #2335556

No! Underline was removed as an option in 2016 – due to it being confused with hyperlinks 🙂

While it “can be achieved”, it’s one of those “non-simple” BBCodes, and we know that playing with anything other than simple BBCodes can create problems with the site!

You may be interested to know that italics is given the shorthand code for “emphasis”. It was intended that would be used in places where we might use underlining in a word processor application.

2 users thanked author for this post.
        • #2335692

More often than not, when desiring emphasis I use boldface type instead of italics. To my eye, italics in sans-serif faces doesn’t provide enough contrast with regular type for the intended purpose.

Oddly, when typing in the reply box the font that I see is a serif typeface, but it all comes out as sans serif when the reply gets posted. More than once I’ve gone back in to edit the reply to change it to boldface from italics because the latter just isn’t different enough.

The serif typeface appears when one is typing or reading a comment before submitting it in the “Visual” mode; the sans serif, in the “Text” mode. When one then sets something off in a special format: bold, italics, etc, it shows up looking so in “Visual”, but as formatting instructions in “Text.”
