      I think 24h2 should have never been released period. It was not even close to being broadly distributed and to this day still has serious problems for many. I still get daily micro or short term freezes on two of my PC’s. I think that I am ready to go back to Mac’s.

        Hi Craig526:

        Did you add the registry edit in Susan Bradley’s 7000002 Blocking new Outlook from installing?  If you don’t add this registry block to prevent the  “new” Outlook for Windows PWA (progressive web app) from being installed and uninstall this PWA you should expect it to be pushed out again with future Patch Tuesday updates until that registry block is applied.

        See the 10-Jan-2025 Neowin article Microsoft to force-install New Outlook on Windows 10, shares PowerShell/Registry workaround for more information about this forced install.

          Thanks,lmacri. I never saw Susan’s Block BUT the March CU Outlook item appears to affect just my Windows Mail setup via Start, which my post below details. With Hm-Stdnt C2R Office Not having Outlook I don’t think I’d ever get any version of the New Full App that many of you would deal with. Thanks again!

            March CU Outlook item appears to affect just my Windows Mail setup via Start

            Hi CraigS26

            If you mean the free Mail and Calendar app built in to Windows 10, that app is no longer supported by Microsoft – see the 09-Nov-2024 Neowin article Windows Mail will stop working on December 31, 2024. If you wish to continue using a free Microsoft mail app you must switch to the “new” Outlook for Windows PWA as instructed in the MS support article Export Emails and Contacts from Windows Mail or People and Import to New Outlook before you uninstall Mail and Calendar and/or People.

            Windows Mail users also have the option of  switching to a reputable free third-party email client like Thunderbird or eM Client. Just be aware that the free edition of eM Client is limited to a maximum two accounts. For a review of both products see Nick Lafferty’s 28-May-2024 7 Best Email Clients For Windows: Free and Paid.

              Is is possible to keep using the WinMail & Calendar but it requires manually replacing several program components in various folders and modifying some registry settings.

              I first did this way back in Sept 2020 when I downloaded all the necessary parts from How to Reinstate WinMail onto Windows 8/10/11

              The last time I had to use them to re-activate WinMail & Calendar was Nov 2023 and, even with my Windows 10 22H2 updated thru Feb 2025, the legacy WinMail & Calendar still work just fine (just used them a few minutes ago.)

              FYI, there’s also Windows Mail Restore Tool for Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 but, since it wasn’t available when I first re-activated WinMail & Calendar on my system, I can’t say how well it works.

              Important note: you must save the existing Local Folders to an alternate location before using either method if you want to keep the existing accounts and messages.

              It is possible to keep using the WinMail & Calendar …

              But that’s the Windows Vista program of 20 years ago, not Windows 10/11 Mail and Calendar; Correct?

      A side updates (I’ve upgraded to 24H2):

      KB5053598 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems

      No hiccups. I’m still not seeing any of the reported problems with 24H2 that I’ve read about and that have been reported here at AskWoody. I’ve uninstalled all the nuisance apps, just as I’ve done with every other version of Windows, and it’s running nice and steady.

      Now running Windows 11 Pro Version 24H2 (OS Build 26100.3476). I’ll wait for the push on my NAS and E5420.

      My 1st attempt to see Hotmail mail via Start/Windows Mail resulted in the Outlook setup popup. I re-established Both Hotmail Accts and will use as previously done. EssentialPIM is my main Mail app but Win Mail is sometimes useful.
      P.S. I didn’t like the order of the two accts. I had to Delete the Acct I wanted as 2nd and Re-establish it = position #2. SO GLAD I got good Edit time as this is my 3rd.

      Patch Tuesday: Microsoft Fixes 57 Security Flaws – Including Active Zero-Days

      Microsoft just dropped its March 2025 Patch Tuesday update, which includes 57 fixes though closer to 70 with third-party vulnerabilities included. The update addresses some critical security issues that require immediate attention, including the following six zero-day vulnerabilities that hackers are actively exploiting…

      Updated x3 Windows 10 Pro 22H2:
      Win10 Pro in Parallels 20 VM on 2017 iMac4K (Intel Haswell i7)
      Win10 Pro in Parallels 18 VM on 2012 MacBook Pro (Intel Ivy Bridge i7)
      Win10 Pro hardware install on old Dell Studio XPS 1340 laptop

      2025-03 CU KB5053606 for Win10 22H2
      Defender updates

      Observations:
      + The updates installed on all machines with no problems. No double restarts.
      + The WinRE partitions on all three machines remained at 5363.
      + Used the Registry setting to block Outlook (new) – no Outlook on any machine and the registry entry is still there. String value of BlockedOobeUpdaters = [“MS_OUTLOOK”]

      Updated x3 Windows 11 Pro 23H2:
      Two installations of Win11 Pro on ARM in Parallels 20 VMs on Apple Silicon Macs
      One Win11 Pro hardware install on a low-end HP desktop.

      2025-03 CU KB5053602 for Win11 23H2
      Defender updates

      Observations:
      + Two updates proceeded without problems. None experienced a second restart.
      + The Win11 Pro hardware install on a low-end HP desktop experienced a problem with the WinRE partition. I had checked the WinRE build after the 2/11/25 updates and it had updated from Build 4742 to Build 4890. Today when checked before updating, I found the WinRE not only disabled but not reported by “reagentc /info” – Macrium Reflect to the rescue. Looking at the size of the WinRE contents, I found a decrease between the 2/11 and the 2/24 images I had made. I restored the WinRE partition from the earlier date and checked – it was Enabled and Build 4742. I proceeded with the 2025-03 update and the WinRE was updated to Build 4890 and was Active.
      + No Outlook (new) anywhere
      + The WinRE partitions on all three machines are/remain at Build 4890 (after one was fixed).

      On both my Win10 and Win11, I checked for new Installed Apps by running the PowerShell command:

      Get-AppxPackage -allusers | Select Name, PackageFullName

      On my Win10, I found that DEV.Home had returned on one of the installation. Removed and deprovisioned.

      On the Win11 installations, I found a series of installations with the common name MicrosoftWindows.LKG.* (see the entries in the screenshots). For Win11 they seem to be related to the Nov. 2024 CU KB5046633.

      AppList1

      AppList2

      Out of curiosity, I went looking for information. Seems they are related to Windows Spotlight on Desktop and includes tips and other “stuff” as well. I had noticed that Spotlight had been turned back on several months ago after an update and wondered why. Several others commented about it too.
      Well, this seems to be the answer

      I turned it off in the Settings App.
      Here’s some information on that

      Successfully installed the March Windows 10 22H2 updates on 2 PC’s with no issues.

      No sign of the new Outlook and the BlockedOobeUpdaters = [“MS_OUTLOOK”] registry setting is still there.

      One interesting item caught my eye when searching my OS drive to see if the new Outlook files were downloaded or not.

      I found a folder that was created on 02/13/25 (same day I installed the Feb CU that was “suppose” to install the new Outlook).

      C:\ProgramData\USOPrivate\ExpeditedAppRegistrations\MS_Outlook

      That contains a file called updater_Outlook.json with these contents.

      {
          "PFN": "Microsoft.OutlookForWindows_8wekyb3d8bbwe",
          "OEMName": "MS",
          "UpdaterName": "Outlook",
          "RegistrationVersion": 1,
          "Source": "Store",
          "ProductId": "9NRX63209R7B",
          "Scenario": "Acquisition",
          "Priority": 50,
          "HonorDeprovisioning": true,
          "MaxRetryCount": 5,
          "TimeoutDurationInMinutes": 15,
          "SkipIfPresent": true
      }

      I “assume” this was intended to be part of the new Outlook install process that never happened because I have the registry block in place to prevent it.

      Anyone else have this file?

      Can I delete it without causing problems; such as suddenly finding the new Outlook was installed instead of blocked?

      • #2756121

        I have the same file in the same folder with identical contents to yours.
        Have not tried deleting it.
        Had deprovisioned Mail and Calendar long ago. Checked Installed Apps with Power Shell. Have not seen hide nor hair of Outlook (new).

      Which Nvidia update ? If its via Windows update than don’t ever update drivers, firmware, bios…using Windows update. Block them.

      There is an update for Nvidia app version 11.0.2.341 and the latest GPU drivers are :

      Nvidia GeForce Hotfix Display Driver 572.75 (Gaming)

      Nvidia GeForce version 572.60 (Studio driver)

      * Use Nvidia app or download directly from Nvidia

        I know – that’s why I didn’t install it.  But it showed up in my Dell Support updates as well, so I’m undecided.  I dislike downloading from NVIDIA because a lot of garbage comes with the driver.  Probably go with Dell Support.

      Hi Susan:

      Windows Update successfully installed all updates offered for the March 2025 Patch Tuesday on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop, and I haven’t noticed any problems so far. This includes:

      • KB5053606: 2025-03 Cumulative Update for Win 10 Version 22H2 for x64 (OS Build 19045.5608)
      • KB5054229: 2025-03 .NET 8.0.14 Security Update for x64 Client

      As others have already reported, there was no MS .NET Framework v4.8.x or Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) update delivered this month.

      I uninstalled the “new” Outlook for Windows app on 14-Feb-2024 using a PowerShell command after it was pushed out with last month’s Feb 2025 Patch Tuesday updates (see the instructions in my 13-Feb-2025 post #2748202) and then applied your registry edit as instructed in 7000002 Blocking new Outlook from installing, and I am happy to report that your registry edit prevented another forced install of the “new” Outlook for Windows during my March 2025 Patch Tuesday updates.

      I can also confirm that this month’s KB5053606 cumulative Quality Update did NOT fix the System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker service (SgrmBroker.exe) Event ID 7023 errors that are logged in my Event Viewer at each Windows startup. This harmless Win 10 bug is being discussed in CAS’s 16-Jan-2025 System Guard Runtime Broker Service Error.

      I dislike downloading from NVIDIA because a lot of garbage comes with the driver.

      You can avoid that by downloading the update directly from https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/ and making the following selections when installing it.

      NvidiaDriver

      NvidiaCustom

      NvidiaOptions

      I could, but I won’t.  Dell Support updates are easier.  Thanks anyway – I did know that, but I don’t trust NVIDIA.

        UPDATE:  NVIDIA Driver Update.

        The Dell Support Update for NVIDIA and the WAU update were withdrawn (I think), so I updated the driver via WUMgr.  The download was taking a while, so I stopped it and checked Device Manager for the correct driver type.  It seemed to be different  from the one on WUMgr, so I went on the NVIDIA site and slowly found the correct driver and downloaded only the driver.  It installed smoothly and so far I have had no problems with it.  It was updated March 18th, installed today.

      KB5053606 seems to have messed with my printer queue. I noticed my printer, Canon MX920, started printing very slow. Upon looking at the queue it was filled with over 20 print jobs, all from the install date of KB5053606. Normally I hold updates for 7 days, so this one came in in the last 24 hours. I tried to delete the queue using the normal delete all jobs. It just spun its wheels. Finally had to go to Task Manager/services/spooler and restart. I then printed 3 more documents and the three after printing are still in the queue. Looks like they broke the spooler queue.

        Have you tried rebooting a second time?

        Susan Bradley Patch Lady/Prudent patcher

        • #2758142

          Yes, rebooted several times. Rebooting does clear out the spool but it just fills up again. Check for newer printer drivers, none available. Someone on another blog mentioned it also with their HP printer. Haven’t seen this issue since my old Windows 3.1 system.

          • #2758200

            Remove your printer via Control Panel, then reboot and let Windows add it again.

            cheers, Paul
