When I used to click on a jpeg image it would come up in PhotoEd. Now, all of a sudden when I click on the jpeg image it says “Windows cannot find PSP.EXE”. If I go into folder options through Windows Explorer, file types, it still shows jpeg/jpg files being opened with PhotoEd. The path is also correct. What’s gummed up?

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2003 at 10:32 am #677340I did what you suggested, which sounded reasonable to me. I deleted the old file type and reestablished a new one. When I tried to click o.k. I got the following message. “The extension ‘.jpg’ is already in use by file type ‘konvertor’. Choose another extension.” I don’t even know what this konvertor is! I’ve done a file search and came up with nothing.

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2003 at 12:55 pm #677346Sounds quite plausible to me:
“Konvertor washes out problems with images, videos and music files. Konvertor is a file manager, editor and viewer to convert, thumbnail, optimize, batch process and produce special effects on virtually all popular bitmapped graphic and music formats .”
Now, if you did not install it, who did? Do a Search/Find on your Computer and see if Konverter exists. Also, I would think about using StartupList from Spyware.info. NO, I am not implying that you have Spyware on your system, but this program will help identify: A) if Konverter is running, and
from where it is started.

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2003 at 1:35 pm #677350I did a search/find on my computer for “konvertor” . It did not find “konvertor”. I downloaded “startuplist” and ran that program and then did a search for “konvertor”. It found nothing. Yet, when I try to change the file type jpg it still gives me the message that that extension is being used by “konvertor”. What am I doing wrong?

AskWoody LoungerMay 17, 2003 at 6:47 pm #677385I did a c:windowssystemkonvertor.dll search but came up with nothing. Under my folder options I have checked to show all files. I did do a search of my registry and found all kinds of references to “konvertor”, but I opted to do nothing since I know very little about the registry. I do have “Systems Mechanic” and that showed alot of references to “konvertor” but I didn’t delete them. I don’t know if I deleted those references something else wouldn’t work or not.

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 12:46 pm #677507O.K. people, attached is a text file containing all the references to “konvertor” in my registry. I surely hope some of you can make sense out of it. I surely can’t. When I run the program “System Mechanic” it shows most of these entries (I haven’t compared them item by item) but to date, I haven’t deleted any of them. I’ve never installed the program “konvertor” on my computer. I do have Paint Shop Pro. So…………..what’s going on???

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 1:30 pm #677521That was what I was going to ask you to do next. ;-]
The StartupList shows no obvious ‘starting’ of “konverter”. Therefore, it does not seem to be running BY ITSELF at startup. However, SOME other program could still be opening and using the konverter.dll — I just cannot quickly tell which by looking at the StartupList output.
Regardless, the registry file is quite revealing. “Konverter” has STOLEN essentially all of your image file extensions. And what does it define as “konverter” — well it is here:
@=”C:PROGRA~1PSPPSP.EXE %1″
So, in theory, the “Psp.exe” program has been defined as “konverter” in the registry. Is the path to PSP.exe the one you expect? What is the program that opens when you double-click this file:
C:Program FilesPSPpsp.exe ?
What Windows appears to be telling you is that the PATH to “psp.exe” is no longer valid…

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 3:38 pm #677530When I double click an image file I get the message “Windows cannot find PSP.EXE. This program is needed for opening files of type ‘JPG File’. So, my image file doesn’t open.
I would like PHOTOED to be my default viewer. ( c:program filescommon filesmicrosoft sharedphotoed ) which used to be until something wierd happened. I corrected the path for PSP.EXE ( which is Paint Shop Pro ) so now when I double click the image file it opens in PSP. I guess my question now is, “How do I change the default viewer?” -

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 5:10 pm #677578One thing that you can do is to hold down the shift key while right-clicking on the image file. The context menu will then have an Open with… option. Select that, and choose Photo Editor in the dialog that appears – and make sure that you check the box that say “Always use this program”. That should correct the association for you quickly.

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 5:17 pm #677590Well, for one thing, I’ve noticed that when I run IE Repair (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Microsoft Internet Explorer>Add/Remove>Repair) that PhotoEd becomes the default viewer for .jpg. So you might try running that. After you do, there are some other changes that you might want to reverse:
These are the changes that I reverse:
Internet Options/Connections/LAN/ & uncheck the proxy checkmark & also uncheck the “perform security test”. Must also check Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Automatically detect settings. Must remove IE shortcut from desktop, Quick Launch, & StartMenu/Programs. Must remove Create Shortcut from SendTo menu & Show Desktop from Quick Launch.
Hope this helps,

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 6:13 pm #677606If it could not find PSP.exe, then the path was wrong. But — since you really don’t want PSP.exe opening the files in the first place — it does not matter.
I would strongly argue against using the “Open With…” technique — but my time is limited and I can’t get into the exact details at this time. If that works well enough for you, then fine.
I have NO idea how the “konverter” stuff got on your computer, but you may want to simply delete it ALL!! Certainly this has completely wrecked havoc on your image file associations.
Now, before you do that, you need to realize that your registry will be left in a complete disarray because of this…. The shear number of file extensions hijacked by the konverter program is quite astonishing. Each one of those MAY need to be fixed. ON THE OTHER HAND, you may never use many of those file extension, in which case deleting the keys won’t really matter.
Let’s start with this:
What image file extensions do you think you might want to have associated with PhotoEd? I would assume at least .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .gif, .pcx — and maybe a few more.
________________For an example of how to repair the damage done by konverter, you need to make these types of modifications for EACH of the registry keys in your attachment:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.tif]
“Content Type”=”image/tiff”
@=”TIFImage.Document”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.ico]
@=”icofile”
“Content Type”=”image/x-icon”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.cur]
@=”curfile”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.bmp]
@=”bmpfile”
“Content Type”=”image/bmp”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.pcx]
@=”pcxfile”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.wpg]
@=”wpgfile”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.dcx]
@=”DCXImage.Document”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.gif]
@=”giffile”
“Content Type”=”image/gif”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.jpg]
@=”jpegfile”
“Content Type”=”image/jpeg”[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareCLASSES.png]
@=”pngfile”
“Content Type”=”image/png” -

AskWoody LoungerMay 18, 2003 at 11:32 pm #677640I made the changes to my registry as you suggested. Then corrected file associations. So far (finger crossed) things seem back to normal. I sure don’t have a clue as to how “konvertor” got on my machine but I’m glad it’s gone.
Many thank you’s to all who provided the input that corrected my problems. Thank you very much! -

Hi Max
Considering the references to Gator, Bonzi, Weathercast, etc, you should probably download Spybot S&D and AdAware.
Install both, update their data files, then run both. You’ll likely be surprised by all the “stuff” you’ve acquired. Want more info….cruise through the Software Finds and Wants threads for Spybot and Adaware….you should get lots of info.
Have a Great day!!!
