    Hi.

Could somebody please tell me how Ad-aware interacts with Windows XP? I have read some reviews that said Ad-aware is great. But, I have also read some reviews that said Ad-aware adversely affected the computer’s performance. What’s the lowdown on Ad-aware?

    Thanks.

I’ve been using and recommending Ad-Aware to our clients for about a year. I have yet to have a problem with it, and I doubt if suggestions that it impacts performance could be proven up. Ad-Aware is a simple program, with no agent stuff, and it doesn’t run as a service or a TSR. It can’t have any impact on performance if it’s not running.

Something to consider, however, is the impact of all that spyware crap on performance. I recently ran Ad-Aware on a particularly dirty machine that registered 275 hits in Ad-Aware, most of which he wouldn’t have wanted his mom to know about. Natch, it was a college kid’s machine, and it also had four viruses and just about every music sharing program that has ever seen the light of day. Plus a failing NIC and a bad CD-ROM drive. A total mess…

Give it a try — they have a “Double Your Money Back” guarantee. ;-]

Same as Joe & Dave. Only performance hit might be trying to run it in the background as you do other things.

Echoing Dave’s comment. Been using it with XP for 10 months. Works great. Not sure how it would adversely affect performance as it does not run until you request it and then quits.

Are they people on the internet with out a firewall? crazy I have Norton Internet Security this blocks adverts and speed up downloads

          • #618444

Yes there are. Not a good practice but to each his/her own. NIS may block pop ads but Adaware searchs for adware/spyware that has been installed on your machine. This normally happens as part of other software installation. The spyware will try to send information back to the vendor.

Ad-Aware is a spyware removal program. It is first rate, free, and it works perfectly. Currently running it on Win XP with no problems whatsoever. Get it a lavasoft.com.

I understand Norton Internet Security would tell you if spyware was sending out any info. It tells you when any program wants to conect with the internet, was well as someone trying assess you computer. I get about 6 -10 attempes at night when I’m on line mostly Backdoor Trojen

I would hate not having a firewall bash

            Jimmy–
No one would disagree about the importance of firewalls, particularly on HSD connections, but not all of those are Trojan attempts. A lot of people do innocent pinging.

As you and NIP say a hit may be inicent, what I don’t understand is why anyone would ping me just to get locked out for 30 minutes

    • #617998

I’ve been running it with XP since Beta–works well–and I ran it in background this morning without any palpable performance hit. Their FAQ says that they are “working on a version for XP”. I would encourage it. Gets wide spread praise all over the web.

Hi defrag. Thanks a lot for posting a reply. I have installed and used Ad-aware. It seems to be working fine.
