AskWoody MVPApril 10, 2018 at 9:30 am #183329Shouldn’t it be 1804 by now?
Maybe that is the holdup, version control?
That would make Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Linux on parallel release.
Perhaps the TotalMeltdown charade has delayed the release?
If debian is good enough for NASA... -

AskWoody_MVPApril 10, 2018 at 7:06 pm #183496Heh, imagine that it could take a month to reset the version branding, make new builds, do system testing, etc., etc… 🙂
However, the reality is nowadays probably more like one guy throws code up to the Github server, the automated build picks it up, and voila, everyone gets an update the next night.

GuestApril 10, 2018 at 12:02 pm #183375Good news:
I have managed to COMPLETELY disable windows update in W10 1709
Neither troubleshooter nor SFC or DISM has been able to bring it back to life.
No, not the reset script either!Bad News:
I have no idea how i managed it, so I can’t repeat or restore it… =;-)Blessing or Curse?

AskWoody_MVPApril 10, 2018 at 7:09 pm #183498I had that happen for a period of about 6 weeks with v1709. Then it started working again, and I don’t actually think I changed anything to make it work. This happened once during the life of v1703 for me as well.
Based on my personal experience, I’d say the update process in Windows 10 seems to fall over if you look at it wrong, kind of like an opossum.

Hehe, if they were really serious, they would start all over again -or- strip it of all the telemetry, snoopware, 90% of apps, ads, forced updating, bloat of all sorts, etc… My 2cents

Telemetry – MS profits
snoopware – MS profits
bloatware – MS profits
ads – MS profits
forced updates – MS profits
As long as people use Windows 10 – Microsoft won’t pass on this. I wouldn’t.

GuestApril 10, 2018 at 10:52 pm #183530Actually I think version 1703,1709,1803 will be very confusing when we enter to year 2020.
Say version 2003, 2009 are actually released on Mar 2020 and Sep 2020, not on 2003 and 2009.
I think the best approach is version 10.01, 10.02, 10.03, etc, or 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, etc.
Because those are major updates and version name can accurately deliver the version information to both developer and user.

AskWoody_MVPApril 11, 2018 at 9:43 am #183598It doesn’t seem to make sense until you realize… Confusion, not clarity, is an actual goal. Getting folks used to change is another goal, not stability. They’re trying to numb us all to a new reality, which is very much not like the old reality.
It’s called Marketing.
You’re not supposed to want to trade money for products with value. You’re supposed to want to pay continuously to participate in the big game. You’re not supposed to want things that work, you’re supposed to delight in the discovery of new things, though they may have existed before or not be useful.
How else can things that used to be considered wrong be presented as right today? Remember when software had to work right, or come with a genuine promise that it’d be made to work right, before we’d actually BUY it? Remember when Windows Defender was created as anti-spyware? Remember when software that sought to take over your system was considered malware? When “opt out” installers with piggy back payloads were considered bad? Remember when a 3 year OS release cadence made perfect sense? Remember when you had to pay for the work that went into making something complex and powerful?
Microsoft got rich on all that, yet it’s not at all how they’re doing things today.
The fascinating thing is that many folks don’t see how (or how much) they’re being manipulated.

AskWoody_MVPApril 11, 2018 at 10:06 am #183602I think it’s more a case of the ten-minute, actually about two-year employee. Management pushes new product development as opposed to maintenance and testing. New development is high-profile and the new employee gains accolades for product creation and then leaves on the wave. Maintenance and testing are left to remaining employees or not performed at all.

I don’t believe it was set for “metered”. I’ve never used that setting before. I just set it for “metered” and the speedtest runs normally.
The crazy thing was that I spent a lot of time troubleshooting a hardware problem and not finding anything before I tried a backup. I even had the ISP out to check my connection.
All I can say is Thanks Microsoft!

GuestApril 13, 2018 at 10:56 am #184441Probably gave you a driver “update” for your network card. If it worked correctly it would have had (noticeable) no effect.
microsoft: “you need a driver update for your network card”
benefits: almost nothing usually
side effects: might break networking, slow it down, or cause other trouble.
microsoft: “but the version number is higher!”If the driver you are using works for you keep it unless you have reason to change. If you have reason to update a driver do it under a controlled situation. Unless you are running windows 10, then it will happen “whenever” and without strong reason or notification.

GuestMay 3, 2018 at 8:03 am #189867Once updated to version 1803 of windows 10 it seems to be impossible to install Office 2013. If you have installed Office 13 prior to the 1803 upgrade there is no problem but otherwise the microsoft installer fails at about 90% with no detailed error message
