SatoriPhotoXL (Free version and $29.95 USD version) Paint Program
the Gimp (Free) Do you really need PhotoShop??

I’m going to stick with my all-time favorite: Paint Shop Pro

I’ve used this all-in-wonder (to borrow from ATI) since version 3.11 (it’s up to 8.0 now). With rebates, you can usually buy this for less than $50 US. It has all of the features you would expect: Layers, Vectors, Web-friendly utilities, even a new scripting tool for automating repetitive tasks.

PSP is definitely the tool of choice for beginners, advanced amateurs, and even professionals. I believe it will soon give even PhotoShop a run for its money!

Just my 2cents

Hey Ken, the only problem is that posts in this forum expire in 90 days. If you are trying to keep this info around for a long time, like the spyware thread, you might consider asking a Mod to move this thread to the Software forum. FWIW…..

Hi Big Al

Forgot about that! doh
Could one of the mods fire up the moving van and truck this thread over to “Software…”?
Thanks

Have a Great day!!!

What is the Software forum? Is there somewhere where posts do not disappear after 90 days?

• #739780

Don’t know if that’s tongue-in-cheek or not, but you posted the question in the “Software” forum (shortened for ease of typing). At the top of each forum is a Forum Information link, as shown below.

My post wasn’t tongue-in cheek, I thought this was the only Software thread hence the comments in the thread about moving it to the Software thread confused me. I guess you had already moved it from elsewhere? blush

Hi Michael

Yep….I originally posted in Pix Place where the post would have a limited life span..

Some threads are being anonymously excised with no explanations with limited life spans as well.

Sorry, I don’t think that’s the case. If you’re aware of one where it DID happen, it had to be an accident AND rare! When a Mod removes, locks or transfers a post or thread, the procedure is to SAY SO for the edification of all. In this case, no mention was made of it BECAUSE Ken took my suggestion and asked, in the thread, for a Mod to move it. When that happens, the Watched Threads code will automatically find the thread and show it to you. It did for me.

On the topic of limited life spans, each forum has a forum info link you can check to see what the “PUBLISHED” duration is. All of this has no relationship to the temporary problem we’ve had with the overload of the Lounge and the accompanying temporary removal of threads. They will be returned as soon as the Lounge returns to “full power.”

The one I referred to Al, was Hell Froze Over:I Tunes Through a Window where about a week and a half of Bowlie and my threads are not there anymore. I had put up some links to some good Apple threads and we had traded some comments on Windows and Apple–and I had observed how the features of Longhorn previewed at the PDF in LA were very similar to the new OS 10X Panther the successor to Jaguar–particularly the browser–and I thought it was legitimate in context with the way the thread I started headed.

That’s really true because there are plenty of legitimate screenshots from Paul Thurott out on Aero, Avalon, Indigo, Palladium, WinFS file system, and the Win Fx programming model including the .net framework. I began Beta testing it last week and the new Longhorn Command Shell that they will have available is based in large part on Unix.

Thanks for the clarification, but I’ve seen a few mysterious instances where that just hasn’t happened.

The thread entitled Hell Froze Over is still available, complete with links (the link you provided will take you to it). I am not aware of any intervention by a moderator in that thread.

Thanks Hans–

The first two-thirds of thread is, and that’s good, because a lot is happening fast because of the competition between the various music download stores, and Apple is still mainly targeting the Ipod it’s hardware, but about the last 10 threads into November on Apple and Microsoft with Apple links are gone now. I don’t think I saved it to my hard drive so I can’t compare exactly–I just remember the posts Bowlie and I did.

hello Hi Ken and everyone, can I just check, Infraview is not a picture program but a viewer for pictures ect…do I have that correct? Many thanks.

• #744829

IrfanView is a graphical jack-of-all-trades. You can use it to

• View a single picture.
• View thumbnails of all pictures in a folder.
• View pictures in a slide show format.
• Scan pictures (if you have a scanner.)
• Convert pictures to other formats.
• Overlay text over pictures.
• Manipulate pictures, for example
• Crop
• Rotate
• Flip
• Resize
• Sharpen
• Edit colors

•
• Combine pictures (panorama view)
So it is a viewer, but it is much more too.

hello Hi HansV, thank you for the info on InfraView, I did run the install but found it a little harder to drive than ThumbsPlus and VuePro, so I uninstalled it but still have the exe. Thought before I gave up on it I would ask in here if I am slow in seeing the obvious, have been reading such good things about it in here for ages. So I will reload and check it out again, appreciate the feedback. Many thanks again

Hans points out the wide functionality of IrfanView, but I would like to advise people that most of the functionality is available through the command line and associated escape codes.

Using Visual Basic with its Shell command gives users programmatic control of the program, so users can add the IrfanView functionality to their own applications.

Hi Cyberdance

HansV has listed some of the features of Irfanview.

My suggestion……….download it and play with it………..try features from various menus just to see what they do and try combinations of features (eg. copy a selected area of one pic, doctor it in some way, then paste it onto another pic)

Have fun !!!!

Have a Great day!!!
