How to replace Windows Live Mail with Thunderbird
I don’t want to start a religious war, but reader Conehead has the inside scoop on how to use Thunderbird with your Microsoft-supplied email addresses:
Apparently the new Outlook.com is going to be using the Office 365 mail servers. I have just set up Thunderbird to send/receive mail from these servers. To me, Thunderbird seems very similar to WLM.If anyone is interested, I have some screenshots of how the setup screens should look. -
Microsoft won’t support Windows Live Mail with MS-sourced email addresses… but Google will
If you have an @outlook.com or @hotmail or @live or @msn.com address, you have to give up Windows Live Mail by June 30. @gmail, OTOH, will work fine

There’s a fix for Windows Live Mail 2012
Three months ago, I wrote about the way Microsoft basically killed Windows Live Mail 2012 for Windows 7 and 8.1.
This latest version of KB 3093594 has been accused of slowing Windows Live Mail to a standstill and “losing” both sent mail and folders. It looks as though the Jan. 8 version of KB 3093594 is the same as the Dec. 17 version of KB 3093594, which was designed to fix the Dec. 14 version of KB 3093594 but failed miserably.
Now there’s some hope. An anonymous poster has found a fix:
HI all there! It might be long time ago since this post has been updated, but there is an easy fix for this problem, by uninstalling the darned update in the following way:
Close (exit) Windows Live Mail completely.
Run the following command in an elevated (i.e. as administrator) command line:
Msiexec /package {B775C26B-EAA8-4A11-ACBF-76E52DF6B805} /uninstall {342DCD5D-5946-453B-97AC-D53B7662EDF5}
OR (if the previous command does not work):
Msiexec /I {B775C26B-EAA8-4A11-ACBF-76E52DF6B805} MSIPATCHREMOVE={342DCD5D-5946-453B-97AC-D53B7662EDF5} /qb
N.B.: IF (!) the msp setup wizard asks to remove or repair the application, you need to click “Repair”.
Don’t start Windows Live Mail yet and reboot.
The problem should be fixed now. Thanks, AC!

Outlook, Windows Live Mail problems – caused by Exchange?
Just got this interesting letter from reader LL:
Hi Woody, I really do not like to beat a dead horse, but the problems that MS is having with their web mail service and their email client continues and has become a nightmare for many home and corporate users. Office users get hit due to the link to Outlook.com or Outlook Preview.MS appears to be fiddling at the server end because Outlook has been up and down since January 18th. Users are reporting a myriad of issues, especially in the UK.
I no longer user WLM/Outlook, but a friend of mine uses Hotmail and tells me that they have received emails over the past 3 days but they can not delete them after they are read, nor can they move the ones they want to save to a storage folder. They get a popup which just states that an error has occurred. This has just happened out of the blue.It may be that the MS new Exchange Protocol is the real issue (an assumption on my part – I have no proof). I say this because MS has still not been able to fix the syncing problem which they have admitted resides on their servers. If there is an upside to all of this, maybe MS is putting some priority on fixing the syncing problems. The outages may be the result of them testing different fix scenarios. However, they should back them out when they do not work. Days on end of problems is just not acceptable. MS has some weird idea that negatively impacting users has no consequences. -
Windows Live Mail woes continue – more problems with the re-re-released KB 3093594
If you’re using Windows Live Mail 2012, my first suggestion is to just give up. Microsoft apparently doesn’t care about WLM, and hasn’t devoted enough resources to solving the problem they’ve created. Move to Outlook.com or (my favorite) Gmail.

Windows Live Mail 2012 patch 3093594 freezes Win10, other problems
Microsoft’s email announcement looks like malware. Whoever did this should be publicly flogged – and I’m being charitable. Must be the holidays.
