  • Best way to get Windows 7 updated

A couple of friends were batting around the idea of using the KB 3125574 update – the one I call “Windows 7 Service Pack 2” – to get Win7 brought up to date.

    Here’s what I told them:

There are severe problems with KB 3125574

I suggest you install the latest Win7 Update speedup patch

And update Win7 the usual way.

  • Massive overhaul to updating Windows 7 – Service Pack 2, without the name

Win 8.1 said to be next.

    It’s a REAL big deal.

UPDATE: I know you folks tend to be cynical. 🙂 So I just downloaded and installed it. Yes, the Windows 10 update enabling patches (new Windows update clients) are there. But the massive update respected my GWX Control Panel settings – on reboot, GWX icon isn’t there, KB 3035583 is the “optional” list and unchecked. No listing for installing Win10.

Also, the idea of releasing one set of non-security updates once a month isn’t new. It’s old. That’s what Patch Tuesday was all about. ‘Course we’ll have to see how they get bundled, and how good/bad the quality might be. But there’s good cause to be happy about this development.
