Widespread problems with last week’s Win10 1703 patch, KB 4022716
There’s a reason why I keep recommending that you avoid Windows 10 Creators Update. It ain’t baked yet.
Case in point: KB 4022716, the June 27 cumulative update for Win10 version 1703, which is supposed to bring the version up to build 15063.447.
There’s a lengthy Microsoft Answers forum thread about how KB4022716 kills web browser Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer. Another one about black screens with flickering cursor after unlocking, which is repeated on a Lenovo forum. A laundry list of additional problems.
Comodo says:
We strongly advise Comodo users not to update to latest MS update KB4022716, which is available for Windows 10 users till they have new fixed version of Comodo internet security products installed.
Some people are reporting that the patch has been pulled. Others say that it’s still being offered.
If you ignored my advice and upgraded to Win10 Creators Update, you would be well advised to avoid the latest cumulative update.

Win10 Creators Update now available – and you don’t want it
Why and how to block the latest version of the last version of Windows, 1703.

BTW, Günter Born has a German-language list of all the installation possibilities on Borncity. The English language version is here.

Microsoft coming (a little bit) clean on its telemetry settings for Win10 Creators Update
I’ll have more as I get a chance to step through the details, but the post this morning from Brian Lich is a decided step in the right direction.
Version 1703 basic level Windows diagnostic events and fields
Version 1703 installation privacy settings
That latter article duplicates some info that we’ve known for quite a while. See the info I posted earlier in 5 Fatal flaws that dog the new Windows 10.
Thx to Peter Bright at Ars Technica.

Microsoft has posted official ISOs of Build 15063 – sure to be Win10 Creators Update, version 1703
Although the web site says you have to be a registered Windows Insider, in fact that doesn’t appear to be a requirement.
As you’ve read, I strongly recommend that you not install this version until the bugs get shaken out – likely in July or August.

No, Win10 beta build 15055 is not the “RTM” of Creators Update
Richard Hay over at Penton’s Supersite has three good reasons why Friday’s beta build 15055 is likely not the final release of Win10 version 1703 Creators Update:
- There’s a watermark on the desktop
- It has an expiration date
- The official announcement says there’s a bug with the Store and “This issue will be fixed in the next build.”
The discussion in the Lounge also notes that:
- Surface Pro 3 won’t install 15055 if there’s a microSD card in it
Of course, Microsoft can do anything imaginable (and some things unimaginable) to create the “final” RTM Creators Update. Don’t forget that last time around, MS pushed a cumulative update (KB3176929) just before it released 1607 to the masses. The folks in the Insider program were working on build 143939, thinking we had it made, when we suddenly discovered that the “real” final build was 14393.10.
Will history repeat itself? Guess we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out.
Which reminds me… many observers now say that Win10 Creators Update will roll out on April 11. While that’s entirely possible, releasing on April 11 would be like tossing gasoline on a bonfire. April 11 is the first real Patch Tuesday in two (arguably three or four) months; there will undoubtedly be patches for Win 7, 8.1, and Win10 version 1507, 1511, and 1607 on that date. Hard to imagine MS would release 1703 simultaneously.
For reference, none of the Win10 versions have gone out on Patch Tuesdays – 1507 was on July 29, 2015; 1511 was on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015; 1607 was on Aug. 2, 2016.
Surely somebody’s figured that part out.

Fresh ISOs of the latest Win10 Beta, build 15025, now available
In anticipation of this weekend’s Bug Bash, Microsoft has released official copies (ISO files) of its latest Win10 version 1703, beta test version 15025.
If you have a spare machine (or want to run it in a VM), download it here.
If you find anything unexpected, let me know in the Lounge!
(P.S. Yeah, the download’s taking for-e-ver.)

Will Windows 10 Creators Update be Version 1703 or 1704?
Günter Born has a blog post on Born’s Tech and Windows World that looks into the question. He comes down solidly in favor of 1703 – even if it isn’t released until April.
Good stuff.

New Win10 beta build 14965 just released
If you’re in the Insider Fast ring, you can install it now.
The list of new features isn’t very interesting, unless you like to have Sticky Notes “insights” (handwriting recognition and Cortana interaction) turned on inside Sticky Notes. But it looks like there are lots of bug fixes.
