Symantec Endpoint Protection dies again
What’s with these folks at Symantec?
Catalin Cimpanu reports in ZDNet:
For the fourth time in three months, a Symantec security product is crashing user apps, and this time it’s the latest Chrome release, v78, which rolled out earlier this week, on Tuesday, October 22… According to the antivirus maker, the issues are only affecting SEP 14 users on Windows 10 RS1 [I think he's referring to Redstone 1, which probably means any recent version of Win10 -WL], Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2016 operating systems. Symantec users on other OS versions can fix this by updating to the latest SEP 14.2 release…
The issue of SEP crashing Chrome 78 browsers should have not surprised Symantec staff, who received early warnings about this more than three months ago, according to a bug report filed in early August while Chrome 78 was still in testing in the Canary channel.
Remember how Symantec didn’t figure out how to work with the revised SHA-2 update signing requirement for Windows 7?

Yet another massive release of patches, re-patches, re-grouped patches, and a few explanations
If you thought it couldn’t possibly get worse, you ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.
Computerworld Woody on Windows.
UPDATE: There’s another bunch of patches out today, Jan. 19:
The Update Catalog shows a new Jan. 19 entry for KB 4057144, the second cumulative update this month for Win10 1703. It also shows a Jan. 19 entry for KB 4057142, the second cumulative update this month for Win10 1607. Both are available in 64-bit and 32-bit versions. I have no idea if there’s anything new in those 64-bit patches, or if they’ve just been re-issued to yank our (or at least my) chain.
There’s also a new Preview Monthly Rollup for Win7/Server 2008R2 (KB 4057400) in 64-bit and 32-bit flavors.

Have a 1 TB Surface Pro 2017? Forget about Symantec Endpoint Protection
Remember how I warned you about the new Surface Pro 2017 with the “1 TB” SSD? Ends up it’s two 512 GB SSDs, running Storage Space so you just think it’s 1 TB.
Looking at a 1TB Surface Pro 2017? Make sure you know what you’re getting
Looks like another problem’s appeared. Symantec now says, officially, that if you have a 1 TB Surface Pro 2017, you can’t run Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP).
This behavior is by-designed. SEP client cannot be installed to storage space drive.
I swear I don’t understand why people buy Surface machines. We’ve seen sooooooo many problems with them.
