  • Ready for the (tiny!) shift to the Lounge?

Looks like we’re set to start rolling out the Lounge. It’s going to go in stages, and Phase 1 is minimal.

The changeover is currently scheduled to start on Sunday night. The site may be down for several hours.

When you wake up on Monday morning, you’ll see some changes. You’ll still be able to post anonymously, but you’ll also be invited to register for a Lounge account. If you decide to register for an account, once you’ve responded to the registration email, verified your account, then posted a reply in the Lounge, and that reply has been moderated (accepted) by one of the newly minted MVPs, you’ll be able to post replies in the future without moderation.

Your account information is stored in a WordPress database, here on the site, which is reasonably secure. Your password is salted and one-way encrypted, so even if somebody swipes it, the bad guys won’t be able to figure out what it is.

There will be two forums in the initial Lounge – one that mirrors the posts here in the blog, and another called AskWoody Central that covers the basics for creating an account and posting replies. If you have any problems, nudge me in that AskWoody Central forum, or send me email.

At first, that’ll be the only change. There’s a whole lot going on behind the scenes – just converting all of the old AskWoody posts and tens of thousands of comments to the new structure will take many hours. In the end, you’ll be able to post comments (to be called replies) without me getting in the middle of things, and you’ll be able to search the comments/replies with a fair amount of precision.

We’ll build the rest of the Lounge out very, very slowly.
