  • 2000011: Group A, Group B and Group W – what’s the difference?

@elly has kindly put together an overview for you Win7 and 8.1 users.

If you aren’t quite sure if you want to be in Group A, Group B, or Group W — when it comes to struggling with patches — check out AKB 2000011.

  • New topic in AskWoody Knowledge Base: Verifying Checksums

In the last few days, we have added another post to the Askwoody Knowledge Base: AKB1000006 is a primer on Checksum Verification, designed to help those new to using checksums for verify downloaded files.

While many of our readers are already doing that routinely, there may be some for whom this is all new and mysterious, even though its practice is sometimes mentioned here on AskWoody.com. With the possibility of installing a corrupted, accidentally altered or deliberately tampered-with file, it makes sense to check first where that is possible. The topic also mentions how to check digital signatures on files.

And like all our Knowledge Base topics, it is included on the Knowledge Base Listing page, for easy reference.

  • AskWoody Knowledge Base – Your Information Source

When the AskWoody Lounge was set up earlier this year, one of the aims was to provide a way to find easily understood information about Windows computers. This was the reason behind the AskWoody Knowledge Base.

Over the last four months, various contributors have written about diverse topics, aimed as a one-stop reference location.

One of the issues with the forum software being used on AskWoody is that topics that are most recently active show at the top of the forum page. This makes finding information quite confusing, so pinned at the top of the forum page is a separate topic called Knowledge Base Listing.

In the Knowledge Base Listing, all topics are listed by their AKB number and all are hyperlinked. They are grouped with similar issues.

If you aren’t familiar with AskWoody Knowledge Base or the listing page, now’s a great time to check it out, before you need it.

  • New AskWoody Knowledge Base articles

I’ve just opened up the Knowledge Base forum, with three new articles:

AKB1000001: Using the System File Checker, from @NoelCarboni

AKB1000002: Links to Flash update resources, from @Kirsty

AKB3172605: Solving Windows 7 update scan slowdowns, from @CanadianTech

Obviously, I’m borrowing the 7-digit numbering system that should feel comfortable. Whenever possible, I’d like to link our KB articles to Microsoft’s KB articles by using the appropriate KB number over here.

Yes, these are real live Topics in a real Forum and, as such, you can comment on them. In fact, I encourage it.

Have a potential AKB article you’d like to have posted? Email it to me: woody@askwoody.com

  • What should be in the new AskWoody Knowledge Base?

We’re kicking the tires on the new AskWoody Lounge. I hope to have it grafted onto the site over the holidays.

One of the big new features is an expanded ability to post AskWoody Knowledge Base articles, and post replies to them. So far I have four AKB articles in mind:

AKB 0001: Download links for Win7 Security-only patches

AKB 0002: Download links for Win 8.1 Security-only patches

AKB 0003: Start updating Win7 again – moving from Group W to Group B

AKB 0004: When killing Cortana doesn’t kill Cortana (from PKCano)

AKB 0005: The Laws of Supersedence (by MrBrian)

    Any other suggestions?
