The empty inetpub folder is listed here for the Windows 11 23H2 update.

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/april-8-2025-kb5055528-os-builds-22621-5189-and-22631-5189-b146080a-bd4e-4a10-8ab0-22368c61556b

[OS Security] After installing this update or a later Windows update, a new %systemdrive%\inetpub folder will be created on your device. This folder should not be deleted regardless of whether Internet Information Services (IIS) is enabled on the target device. This behavior is part of changes that increase protection and does not require any action from IT admins and end users. For more information, see CVE-2025-21204.

I haven’t had any issues so far with 24H2 vs 23H2.  Dell PCs are shipping with 24H2 and I’m using the 24H2 iso for any reloads I do myself.  As it’s a full rewrite of the OS, I’d rather not have to do that later this year to get current.

You can easily fix the iOS 18.2 mail count inconsisentency.

      Settings -> Notifications -> Mail

      Customize notifications

Then pick all unread messages instead of primary.

If you don’t like the contact photos in the app, those can also be turned off.

      Settings -> Apps -> Mail

      Scroll to message list section

      Toggle off “Show Contact Photos”

It’s been released as of this morning.  I just downloaded the official 24H2 ISO.  Installation assistant has also been updated.

I use OTPAuth on my iOS devices.  It syncs between them and automatically backs up into my iCloud.  I also download a backup of the database to save on my local PC.  It’s works great on my Apple Watch for the codes.

The only thing not in it are my Microsoft account (I use MS Authenticator) and strictly 2FA codes for client sites.  I use Google Authenticator for those (mainly just to keep them separate from mine).  Recovery codes are in an encrypted folder on my hard drive and backed up in my iCloud folder.

I also have 3 YubiKeys I use for all accounts that make use of them.  One goes with me, one is home in a safe and the 3rd offsite in a safe.

Banking sites, for me, seem to be the ones lagging behind in 2FA support.

Assuming you are trying to download from a Windows PC, you’ll need to spoof your browser agent to force the ISO download from Microsoft.  This link will help:

      https://www.howtogeek.com/427223/how-to-download-a-windows-10-iso-without-the-media-creation-tool/

If you have access to a Mac or Linux box you can just go to:

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

… and it will give you the option to download the ISO directly.

The ESU program for Windows 7 did not apply to 7 Home.  Watch Microsoft make the consumer Windows 10 ESU program/pricing for Windows 10 Home only. If you are running Windows 10 Pro at home… business pricing it is.

    • Over the last month or two they are pestered with the Update Now/Tonight screen within hours of the update being released. Just happened with both phones already at iOS 17.4 when 17.4.1 came out.

Happened with iPadOS (17.4.1) for my IPad Air 5, and I have automatic updates off, too. It happens this way all the time.

I get a red badge on the ‘Settings’ icon on my Home screen. No download, no install … instead, on my Software Update’ screen, there is a blue bar to tap, if I want to ‘Update Now’ or blue font ‘for ‘Update Tonight’, if I want to do that.

Otherwise, the notification just sits there on the ‘Software Update’ screen and the red badge remains on the ‘Settings’ icon on the Home screen — this since ‘automatic updates’ is ‘OFF’.

I have to tap to make the update happen.

That’s not what’s happening with my friends.  Within hours of release and no interaction with the settings/software updates page, it acts like you’ve already asked it to install.  The update now/tonight prompt comes up on top of whatever you are doing.

I’m familiar with the red badge coming up on the Settings app and that’s normal even with automatic updates off.

    • Anyone else seeing iOS 17 ignoring the software updates/automatic off settings?

I have a couple of friends who rely on hotspots for internet access so I have automatic updates turned off (all options – iOS Updates/Security Responses/Auto Download iOS updates are off).

At least as of yesterday, KB5034441 was still being pushed out via Windows Update.

The system I was working on tried to install but couldn’t (too small RE partition and it was the first partition on the drive).  Blocked further tries.

    • in reply to: The state of OneDrive #2634424

OneDrive’s biggest nuisance for me is it’s insistence on using it for backup.  It constantly pops up in the notification center, file manager and Microsoft 365.  I only use OneDrive for a few files to sync with my phone and will never use it for backup.

Being unable to view and edit your familiar locations is a little bizarre for Apple, known for its user privacy and transparency.

Apple did allow this previously.  You used to be able to view and edit the list.  They disabled it with iOS 15 or one of the early point releases.  Word at the time was the change was made for privacy reasons and reduce stalking for someone in a domestic violence situation.

I used the feature all the time for work tracking but had to go to a third party app after the change.

    • in reply to: KB5034441 has led us astray, in a horrible way #2629866

      Hi Susan,
      Thanks for the info.
I do have a question though: If I understand correctly from your posts and from information on the internet this update only applies to Windows 10 (21H2 and 22H2), not to Windows 11. Is that correct?
If so, maybe the defcon should be different for Windows 10 and Windows 11? I mainly use Windows 11, so that is a valuable distinction for me 😊

      Thanks,
      Frank

KB5034441 is a separate security update for Windows 10.  It’s included in the January 2024 cumulative update for Windows 11.  If the recovery partition is too small then the entire cumulative update will fail.

    • in reply to: KB5034441 has led us astray, in a horrible way #2629820

So far Dell Windows 10 systems I’ve checked don’t have an issue with KB5034441.  Windows 10 systems loaded off an official Microsoft ISOs only have a recovery partition in the 500-522MB range and fail.  Those I’ve blocked with wushowhide.

My Windows 11 laptop with Bitlocker enabled was loaded from the Microsoft 21H1 ISO.  It installed the January update without error.  It’s recovery partition was about 1GB.

I agree with Alex5723…  KB5034441 should have been pulled.

    • in reply to: BitLocker-related update triggers install problems #2627617

I’ve read that this update requires 250MB free space in the RE partition.  I’ve just checked two different systems installed off the official Microsoft Windows 10 ISOs.  One was installed with 20H2 and the second was the latest 22H2 image.  Both have a recovery partition of approx 500MB with about 80-85MB free.

What exactly is Microsoft thinking when their own ISOs didn’t create a large enough partition from the start?
