Primary use will be for large Excel VBA macro workbook/s and repetitious real-time web page query.

Who is your preferred supplier? We can see what they have available and suggest.

      cheers, Paul

I don’t have a supplier yet, still “pen to paper” design phase.

Thanks satrow, will check out the links.

      Corrupt Registry it seems.
If somehow you can save the files you need from an external program or a recovery utility that “opens” the HD to look for your files, save them then re-format and re-install XP.

The XP’s are slowly running bearings on their HDs….I’ll be migrating soon to maybe Win 7 Pro with a “anti updater to Win 10”
To borrow a cliche, “if ya last one out of the XP room, remember to switch the lights off”

      BATcher
Roland – I’d be happier about the BATch file you quote if the author had given some information about why the WUAUSERV service was originally stopped on the author’s machine.

And even happier if the BATch file automatically caused the running of outstanding important updates, without merely bringing up the Windows Update menu!

Hence the need for included explanations/comments in all BATch files…

This might be why, ( there are many issues with xp update, I just picked the one that had SOLVED).

      Question

How to fix windows update error

      Solved Answer

Actually, Most of the windows update issues occurs due to the last windows update couldn’t updated properly or maybe get corrupted file. Once it get corrupted, you’ll get the error message while updating the windows and your windows can’t be update. That’s why it has stopped when you try to update your windows again. and give you a error message. might be have some more problem with windows systems files. Anyway, we have the proper solution to fix windows update errors. Here you learn how to re-register all the “dll” files that related to windows update and also learn how to get start working all the services related with Windows update, Please follow the steps mentioned below.

I used a an alterantive search engine and get surprising results.

    • Thats ok,
Migrated, got MINT and the XPs are being phased out, 4 of them. 4 Computers

Understandably the Excel project is ongoing, so 1 XP box remains till whenever, the 5th.

I make no apologies, there is no way I really need anything past XP and Office 2010.
It’s the policy of MS to force this upon users of the internet if they want to keep using propriety software with the trade-off being personal data infiltration.
I don’t mind paying for my XP OEM and Office 2010, all paid for.
But not this, Subscription in a cloud ?
My work in a cloud ?
      Nope

There is a lot more to be thank full for to, and hope to keep learning Excel VBA for what it
supposed to do with and for my project.

      Thanks WS,

PS, yes it was an ad, don’t see the point of “it”.
However, if the technology helps keeps us safe from….stuff, national security etc, OK.
That’s a different story, none of my business though.
So I’m happy where I am, MINT and whatever happens next.
      CORTANA the Guardian angel ?

Still got an original boxed set of 3.5″ Floppy, MS Win 3.1 ( with DOS 6).
One day I’ll get around to it to finding out how to burn it onto a CD, ( or USB stick) so it’s a seamless Format C and install, just to preserve the floppy disk set if nothing more.

Anyone know where there are instructions to try this out ?

      Thanks

    • in reply to: One last question before death of XP #1519313

I’m using XP till the cows come home, to. There are no security issues as far banking and personal stuff, I do all my banking at the counter the old_way_new_again_way, type of thing.
However, the reality is, acceptance of the criminal factor and like drew reiterated, XP users with a care less attitude about internet security or naive users, ( many I know personally that have their computers littered with junk, absolute junk from surfing add laden web sites and clik on anything that blink, it can a fresh install of ccleaner 20 minutes to flush out their system, on one occasion the pc froze, and had to be re-booted, and 3 cups of coffee later), well these type I have no sympathy.
Sure, my sceenname, I wish I could change it later on and still retain my identity, I’ll figure it out somehow when the time suits.
But, rappin on here, I am savvy just enough to realize I need to start learning stuff outside of MS products to continue this project of mine, ( it’s a one off btw and I cannot thank WS enough). So far I been putting my foot in the door with Python, and now there is phantomjs.exe where VBA won’t or can’t get into web based activities etc. All these are coming to the fore and open source, ( although I find it difficult in that community when they suggest and suggest and imply the old cliche, RTFM, manuals make no sense, for some of us it is “see it work, follow the code line by line and soon the penny drops”. We are not less or more, I have a trade and some of the higher academics have problem with some of the simplest checks on their cars some times, ” where is the dip stick for the auto-trans, what does it say, what does it mean and and” and stuff I knew when I was 12 !
So we adapt and accept and I agree with drew on the security thing, that I don’t take for granted, and one won’t if they have had an experience with being hacked, by family mind you, and exposed personal gossip.
Once one has that experience, then what the experts in IT security have to say, for me at least, I listen.
What I do about it, that’s another story, but be aware is all I can say and XP is numbered, it’s days are numbered, it’s “low on oil” !

After a long winded approach, it’s finally worked out with collaboration in and out of this forum.
It’s at the time “new” to most, but in the end it required a bit of python, VBA and .bat improvisation to get it to function as a strategy required.
I think in time I’ll learn more of coding beyond my basic VBA to have a 100% VBA Run, or 100% python or whatever else to make a 3rd party’s requirements “communicate”.
An outsource worker said they could have made it work with 100% VBA/JSON, but the price was out of reach and I don’t really think they understood my “project” in it’s entirety.
But, it’s working, and now on to the next piece of the puzzle, at least this one is out the way.

    • in reply to: Question about a WIN 10 issue #1518532

I hope one of them will be to make Edge a bit quicker – still prefer IE and using it and I think Win 10’s Start menu is crap.

Oh – anyone know what the mic icon looks like and where can I find it to enable Cortana – I need to use an external mic.

Don’t mean to hijack the thread 🙂

No not all, all welcome to speak on my threads, not a problem, it’s our basic right to say things nice and constructive.

I am blessed and content with COMODO’S version of browser. I am not sure of the in’s and outs, but just feel a bit more at ease with some tweaking they patch something up, where full chrome has it’s little beedy eyes on the masses to. I have to have IE installed for VBA dynamic web queries, but that’s about it.
The ads/pop ups and all this extra stuff I never use just goes away or it’s not there distracting.

But yeah, seeing that there are alternative OS’s out there, with some degree dysfunctions from time to time, never the less it gets sorted, I’m surprised MS let themselves somewhat deluded or underestimating
how intrusion, or forced intrusion may force some to alternative options.

My ideal brand spanking new MS OS, is likened to a brand new production stock racing car,
      allow me to explain;
A well known car manufacturer ( take your pick, not starting “this car this car that” lol), makes GT or limited edition sports pack production cars.
Then a race team may buy a few and modify to the point where there is not much left of what came out the production line, but still functional, very functional. Out goes the air/cond, windows, all the eye candy, power this and power that, modified to suit one purpose, to go fast and remain within the edge of safety zones, ( real or imagined) to suit a skilled race driver.

That’s what I like to do with a MS OS, remove ALL the bits and pieces I don’t need.
I tried removing all the games one time I think it was XP, long time ago, went to registry and ripped out this and ripped out that, went to folders and did the same, and it all came back again ! Yet I seldom use any of it.
That’s my ideal OS, buy it and have full option what one wants and not wants, yet still have the propriety trademark and support.

    • in reply to: JSON format and VBA #1518366

Nearly solved, but a question regarding some batch files I had to make up from various examples

      One in method particular,
VBA is to execute a .bat file, which in turns executes a script.
VBA coding did not seem to want to fully execute the same script, although clicking onto the said script, it works fine, and clicking onto the .bat file that execute the script worked fine also, but running a
Sub/ End Sub did nothing, yet no errors. The “did nothing” means, the script did not run.

So I found a way I think “tricks” Windows, if that is the correct terminology.

      Code:
”’File name of script is: Script1

      Option Explicit
      Sub Run_Script1_bat()

        Dim PathCrnt As String

          ChDir “C:Folder_BAT_file_is_in”

        PathCrnt = ActiveWorkbook.Path

        Call Shell(PathCrnt & “Run_Script1.BAT ” & PathCrnt)
      End Sub

      ————
File Name of bat file is: Run_Script1
      The batch file code has:

      Code:
      @echo off
      C:Folder_script_file_is_inscript1.py %*

      The question is;

I need to have 4 ,(or later on progressively many more) of these all individually named
in one Module, do I need to have Option Explicit for each each and every Sub / End Sub,

or will Option Explicit become Global for that Module ?

      Thanks

    • I may have solved it, it works by putting all 3 logging codes in one module, one under the other.

This is what I thought had to be avoided.

      The reason is this,

The original logmessage maker, uses a time and date stamp and logs each line one after the other in the txt file as it was meant to do.

The other 2 new log files, need to be a different file name endings, no date or times stamp and the text within to remain a single line each and every time, it’s not really a “history” log, it’s a point of pick-up
      for the 3rd party software/scripting.

I thought there was a way to have all 3 under one Public Sub, but still make the same log files the same as if when separated and still end up with 3 separate txt files named accordingly.
      —————-
      ‘Seperated in one Module.
      Public Sub LOGMESSAGE1(strMessage As String)
      ‘code
      End Sub

      Public Sub LOGMESSAGE2(strMessage As String)
      ‘code
      End Sub

      Public Sub LOGMESSAGE(strMessage As String)
      code
      End Sub
      —————-

      Or ( the question )

      ‘Combined in one Module.
      —————————————-
      Public Sub logfilemakerS(strMessage As String)
      ‘code

      LOGMESSAGE(strMessage As String)

      LOGMESSAGE1(strMessage As String)

      LOGMESSAGE2(strMessage As String)

      ‘code
      End Sub
      —————————————-
I see the problem now, how would it be called ?

      Sub WorkBook_Project ()

      “codes
logfilemaker_LOGMESSAGE “test message-time and date stamps ” ‘ general user log files

logfilemaker_LOGMESSAGE1 “test message 1- no time and date stamps” ‘ required by 3rd party

logfilemaker_LOGMESSAGE2 “test message 2- no time and date stamps” ‘ required by 3rd party

      ‘codes
      End Sub
      —————————————-

      ‘??

The fundamental differance in the coding between time & and date stamps and none
      is this part here

dated and time logs that append

      Code:
// ‘Open’ will create the file if it doesn’t already exist
Open strFileName For Append As #iFileNumber
              [B]Write[/B] #iFileNumber, Format$(Now, “yyyymmdd-hh:nn:ss”) & “>” & strMessage

‘ no dated and time logs

      Code:
‘// ‘Open’ will create the file if it doesn’t already exist
Open strFileName For Output As #iFileNumber
              [B] Print[/B] #iFileNumber, strMessage

      Note
To test the uploaded “fixed” workbook for testing,
it’s set to work in a directory named:
      C:LOGMESSAGETEST

I think I found something, and now at a glance, the py advocate may have a touch of bias, for insisting there is no other !
      hmmm

      http://ramblings.mcpher.com/Home/excelquirks/json

Now all I gotta do is search for something relatable among a very long list of examples, and convert the py scripts back to VBA !
      yayy

    • in reply to: JSON format and VBA #1516982

      Paul T

This is not true. JSON is just a text file and VBA can easily manipulate text files. The issue is that you must understand the format of JSON to use it and this is where the code samples provided come in.

      cheers, Paul

      Thanks,
There is always something “new” to understand
      —,

      ruirib
      Hmmm… Let’s go by parts:

Your VBA script had several issues. I think I corrected most, that were due to the use of bad quote characters. I uploaded a new version of the zip file, with the corrections.

It errored when tried to test,
but then all of a sudden had to do some re-shuffling with the 3 computers, swap files etc etc, cos
one of the IBMs had a “hernia”,
BSoD, twice this week. I think it’s HD, acting up lately, noisy.
      ————–,
      Anyway,

I have uploaded an actual working version of the process in question.
It has those py scripts, they worked because it actually got the sessionID, logged in and sent the required data. Checked my account on-line and sure enough, it worked.
The scripts were made by one who insisted it be done another way as far as picking up my txt files for username/password etc etc as described in previous post.

But also, there is a script that needs wanting and is missing, the RESPONSE.

So I was thinking, if this works up to this point, and there are more solutions such as .NET etc, perhaps if one can re-write, I’ll test them.
I need to “see” what and when the scripts fire up by way of it’s each own unique log.

      But most importantly, very important, and I say this from past experience with propriety software of this type, and that is the following;

The last script that gets Run, is like a “one shot”, it only allows the bet to be sent once, it does not “know” if it “missed”, there is no response.
These misses when they happen, there has to be a up to and including 3 tries, and if they all miss, well that’s too bad, that’s the way it is.
The reason they miss when eligible, ( eligible means, “before the cut-off time”, the race has not started yet) is because of server over-load. It does happen usually at the last -30 seconds before a race is due to start.
There is an avalanche of others trying to do the same, and they all miss to if they don’t have a re-send.
Problem is, how does “it” know it missed ? The only script left to do is the RESPONSE, it does not seem to say much more.
There is one avenue and this may be tedious and not worth the effort, and that is, account balance before and account balance after, and again this is not sure, because it takes about a minute or so for the server’s other functions to update.
This is not necessary right away, but something I will keep an eye on when testing.

So, the upload is 3 py scripts, it uses python 3.4 32 bit.

Paul, if the JSON is as simple as you say it is, then I need to see a working example of how VBA does this, much appreciated.

I don’t know what else to say or ask at this point, it’s somewhat “blinding” it’s outside of what I’m used to, the VBA thing

      Thanks
