      Hi and welcome

You can also explain to your friend that he needs to look in event viewer. Tell Him to
type eventvwr in search go to the windows log>apllication tab.
he needs to look for errors that have app hang, aap crash, or app freeze.

IE is one of the things that freeze like that first.

when he finds the errors tell him to look at the event ID and source

If they are event ID 1000 and source 100 the problem is usally something called DEP

It is in the system control panel>advenced>performance It should not be set to all

I know thats a lot of info to impart but if it is that its an easy fix

      Good Luck

      Hi and welcome

I just wonder if you are set up using workgroup or home group.

      Ken

    • in reply to: Homegroups setup #1194628

      Hi and welcome JOhn

since you homegoup obviously win 7. In win 7 you can use either homegroup which Has to hav e a password, or workgroup whihc doesnt. workgroup also has the advange of using IPv4, and allows mixed machine type where homegroup dpesnt

      Hi and welcome

What kind of signal strength does it show in networking? are there any other “neighbors” with wifi that might be blocking you in that one room?

      Good Luck

    • in reply to: Win 7 on mixed network #1194625

      Hi and welcome

Just as an FYI when you install win 7 it uses homegroup and IPv6. Mixed networks need to be set up using IPv4 and the workgroup model.

One of the biggest Problems for the average user is when they set it up they use Homegroup and then wonder why they cant get the xp machine to see or share with the win 7 machine I post on 5 or 6 other boards and hundreds of times I have seen that

    • in reply to: Cannot get admin privileges #1194622

      Hi and welcome

I am going to assume you are either on vista or win 7. If that is the case you can right click the installer and click run as admin. If your account was an admin you will not have to. The other thing you may need to do is to run it in compatibility mode.

      Good Luck

Western Digital has an app (free) designed for thier drives.

    • in reply to: No sound . #1194530

Probably a driver. type device manager in search>sound tab>is you device listed? does it have a yellow triangle on it? are there any “unknown devices” with yellow on them. If your driver is listed you can right click go to properties and check the status tab. It should say working properly

    • in reply to: Easy wipe of system before Win7 install? #1194526

Wondering how much I can clear out of my computer and start clean. I have an HP Pavillion Media Center PC which came with Vista upgraded onto XP. What can I uninstall before installing Win 7? I have weird problems such as my CD drive not working consistently, that have eluded troubleshooting. I’d like to start over as much as possible. All my data is backed up. I don’t really want to mess with partitions or anything too complex. Any advice?

      Hi and welcome

Clean install is always better. If you can put up with the hassle of re installing your apps do it. Win 7 will give you the option of formatting. If you cant stand the though you can do the upgrade. Both of these are dependent on if you have the full retail version or the upgrade version of course

after installing ie-8 my computer froze and i cant access anything. I uninstalled and reinstalled ie-8 and still have the same problem.

      Hi Ed and welcome

One thing you can check is event viewer (type eventvwr in search). You are looking for errors in the windows logs>application tab. Errors have a red ‘x’ in the left coulum and the ones you are interested in will say something like app hang, app crash, etc. There is a lot of data to look through but worth it When you find them (and you will) note the event ID and source codes. Google tham and it will point you in the direction to solve the freezes.

Let us know if you need help with that

    • in reply to: Windows 7 on new laptop – any advice? #1189164

I will be receiving my new Sony Vaio BTO in about a week. This is a rare opportunity to make changes to the OS before I begin loading software. I intend to load Microsoft Office Professional 2007 last, other than that I’m uncertain if there is anything else I should do. Any suggestions?

      Hi Reboot and welcome

Nice laptop you’re getting. When you get a new lappy it comes with all the junk The maker thinks will see more laptops. Its often not the best software for its purpose and I always remove it…

      Advise
Backup, backup, backup. On another site where I post we see scores of people who didn’t and wish they did. You can use the built in backup, or get a 3rd party app like acronis. The best one is the one you use.

You procedure looks fine and I cant see any problems. You are really going to like win 7. I have been using it for a year in various configs and have had only one minor problem. Have fun dig in and if you need help, there is always someone here to give you a hand

      Good Luck Mate

Yeah I know its an old thread but still a worthwhile question. Obviously there is going to be some sticker shock when going from 98 to XP, Vista, or Win 7. It seems that if you are going to have to learn a new OS, you might want to go to one of the newer windows versions out. That being said, the only choice is win 7,. The OP is going to have to buy new hardware and probably will not buy another computer for years. Has to be win 7
