    • in reply to: What do you think of AOMEI partition? #1498665

I use AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro (V5.6) and have found it excellent. Of particular use is its ability to convert GPT disk to MBR disk and vice-versa — very useful in terms of changing from a Legacy to a UEFI Booted system (the conversion process can be carried out in a few minutes without any OS or software having to be uninstalled/re-installed. A big time-saver. Of course, one would most likely only have to do this once with one’s setup, but the time and effort saved is well worth the cost of AOMEI (in my opinion, anyway!) The tutorials that come with the software are excellent.

I like the free versions of the following:

      Minitool Partition Wizard
      AOMEI Partition Assistant

I have an ASUS notebook with an extra drive slot. If I install an SSD do I need to swap the two drive locations or can I just change the boot order in UEFI?

I agree with aedwall. I use Start8 for accessing things in Windows 8 and if, for whatever reason, I want the metro garbage, they have a button on the start menu for access it.

Revo Uninstaller has a Forced Uninstall tool that you can use if your ap isn’t showing on the list. Just follow the instructions.

    • in reply to: Where to buy APC battery? #1332062

If your battery is a 12 volt, 8 AH gelled electrolyte type, and if you know anyone who works in the security industry, they can get you them at wholesale prices. These are the same as the standby batteries used in security systems.

I use a program called Take Ownership that’s availabe from the How-To Geek at link below. It works with Vista and Win 7.

    • in reply to: Hoax calls from “Microsoft” #1304320

I have recently received several bogus phone calls and one text message which was probably a similar attack only I wasn’t from Microsoft. I receied phone calls telling me that there were some issues with my Wells Fargo credit card ant it was about tobe cancelled. Then I received text message a few days later stating the said credit card had been “cancelled!”

Well I don’t have a Wells Fargo credit card in the first place so I looked up my local Wells Fargo office (I didn’t want to use the one in the messages because I was suspicious of them) and they told my that there is an ongoing phishing scam and they’re trying to track it down. The main point here is that this type of scam can, and likely is, applied with respect to any company not just someone like Microsoft or a wells Fargo. Be careful out there!

With regard to Fences: I like a pristine desktop so I hide the icons. I do however hhave a folder that I call Applications that resides in my Quick Launch bar where I have shortcuts to all the aps I use on a regular basis. It’s just as easy to get at as the desktop and the desktop is clean.

I am going to give Soluto a shot though.

Checkout Karen Kenworthy’s Replicator, it works. It will run on XP and W7, but don’t think she supports it muck anymore. The files are fully accessible just like the originals. She also has several other free aps on her site as well.

I use UBit Menu from this link:

      http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/

Once installed all you need to do is click on the word Menu and the ribbon bar will switch to the more familiar Office 2003 style.

I had a somewhat similar problem with a WD MyBook 1TB drive. In my case the resolution was corrected when I ran Windows (7) update which in turn updated the drvers and eliminated the problem.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Does Not Recognize My External HDD #1219452

Both the installations are both on the same drive, but on different partitions, in any event the problem is solved. I was finally able to get Windows to update the drivers and now the external drive is being recognized.

      Thanks for your assistance,
      Zepe

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Does Not Recognize My External HDD #1219324

      Hi Gerald,

As I mentioned above setup 1 works fine and recognizes the drive normally. Whenever I boot into setup 2 (which is the same Windows version as setup 1) I turn on the external drive prior to booting. I really don’t want to use USB for this drive because of the speed difference between the two.

      Thanx,
      Zepe
