    • in reply to: Open Office.Org 3 RC1 #1125895

      Hi Al,
About a year ago I d/l OxygenOffice. About the only difference that I could tell was that this version contained more clip art and templates. Everything else seemed to be the same. The web site does say that this version supports VBA. To some I would think that this would be important.

Thanks to you I now know about Go-OO. I might give it a try just for the heck of it.

Another one that you might throw into the mix is from Google. Star Office. It is based on Open office. Just go to Google.com and click on more and look for google Pack. It is also free.
I tried it for awhile but went back to the plain Openoffice. I think it was just that I was used to it and new where everything was and did not want to go through the learning curve.

    • in reply to: Your favourite PDF programs #1125594

I was following the thread about Openoffice and when noseing around over at the openoffice site..I noticed an extension called Sun PDF import. it says this about it.

“The PDF Import Extension allows modifying existing PDF files for which the original source files do not exist anymore. PDF documents are imported in Draw and Impress to preserve the layout and to allow basic editing. It is the perfect solution for changing dates, numbers or small portions of text. Native PDF forms are not yet imported.

The next development step will focuses more on the edit capabilities and less on layout by using the Writer.

The PDF Import extension will also enable the PDF export into a hybrid PDF file, which is a PDF with the embedded source file as ODF. Hybrid PDF files will be opened in StarOffice as an ODF file without any layout differences, while users without StarOffice can open the PDF part of the hybrid file.

This is just a beta version and it requires the OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta 2 to work”

So….I thought I would mention it here in this PDF thread.

Not to muddy the thread… But don’t forget about openoffice professional

      It says on the website….
“OxygenOffice Professional (OOOP, O2OP) is an enhanced version of free OpenOffice.org what is a multi-platform office productivity suite.
OxygenOffice Professional contains more extras like templates, cliparts, samples, fonts and VBA support”

you can get it here at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/ooop%5B/url%5D

Dave, why would you NOT want to take control of your ENTIRE system. I am the only one on my computer so it seems that it would be the logical thing to do????

    • in reply to: UpDate Disaster (Vista ) #1119768

      Thanks for your reply…
Yes I do have sp1, (sorry I should have listed that first.)
Here are the one that I checked. and Yes I notice that it is 709.
When I have time I will do them one at a time and see what happens.
Or…perhaps it was something else too…..
      thanks again

    • in reply to: dvd-cd failure #1116766

After a little bit they said they would replace the drive with a new one WITHOUT a restore!!!
The down side is I do have to send it off for a few days..
.will have to confiscate the wife’s and tell her I am doing maintenance and upgrading and it will take a few days before I can get it back to her. innocent

    • in reply to: dvd-cd failure #1116738

Well, this has been a learning experience for me.
I found out why the restore disk would read in the drive. It seems that the DVD-CD drive will still read DVD’s. and the restore disk are DVD’s!

Someone told me in passing that such drives use two different laser lenses, one for DVD and one for CD.

Hence the CD part of the drive is kaput, which makes, of course, the whole drive kaput.
      So…off to the warranty guys.

I will report back when all is well, to let all know the outcome.
      Appreciate the help.

      Scott,
I am a guy to try even the slimest of ideas,
Right next to my lappie is a box of lens cloths…..
I cleaned the heck of the whole thing…… up down and sidways…..Nope

Oh well it was worth a try, what a kick if it had worked!!!!!!!

      Thanks

    • in reply to: dvd-cd failure #1116652

      Thanks Doc,
I think I am back to support. Just as you suggested, I am going to ask and see what they say. The last support guy I talk to seems to be in the US so I could understand him smile
I will let all know what happened….

    • in reply to: dvd-cd failure #1116650

      groan Replace….
Yes, it is under warranty. I called teck support and the first thing they wanted me to do was to a restore from the disk that came with the lappie.
In fact that is how I found out that the drive WILL read the disk!
I did not want to do a restore just yet…
But WHY would the drive read the restore disk but no other disk.
If it will read a certain disk, why can it read another.
What is so special about the restore disk??

I do have all my doc backed up, but not an image so I would have to re-install many many many aps and etc which I am not looking forward to.
I am thinking if the drive is bad, I would rather just replace it.
But I don’t think the guys at warranty will repair without making me go thru the restore option….

It this what they call a brick and a hard place?????

      Thanks for your help

    • in reply to: Web Design #1115670

I’d have them sign up for ‘officelive’ it is free and very easy to set up and design the web pages. When officelive first opened they would give you a top level domain name, now they give you a subdomain. (I believe something like http://www.officelive.subdomainname.com or somthing like that.)
I think you have to give them a credit card number but if you use the free option they never charge it.

You have to go to http://www.officelive.com and then click on Officelive for small business.

    • in reply to: Laptop VGA or s-video to TV #1112972

I use the s-video from my laptop to the tv and seems to get good results. I have downloaded a few movies (rent on line) and then play them using the s-viedo. It is not Hi def quality, but just as good as my dvd player to the tv.

      How about OneNote?

You can have just one page showing all the info and then password just that folder.
