Try the “old one” of closing Word, locating your wife’s version of Normal.dot (C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplatesNormal.dot), renaming it to (say) Normal_.dot and then reopening Word. Tends to work most times…….. HTH

My thanks again for those that responded to my problem. Since I first posted, I have tried uninstalling some junk programs with no effect (one up to you, Walt), but I have now found a work-around. My problem has been the inability to access programs from the Control Panel, the first time I try. On the second and subsequent trys I am OK and the “W.E. not responding” error does not occur. What I have found is that if I change the display designation on Control Panel from “Link” to “Menu” (right click on “Start”, select “Properties/Start Menu/ Customise and change the Contol Panel options from Link to Menu”), then I can access all the programs in “Control Panel” first time and every time. Why this is so is a complete mystery to me, but it works on my computer. If anyone has a technical explanation for this, I will be pleased to hear from you.

This solunds very much as if one of the Dell extensions to Control Panel does not work properly under 64-bit Windows. Unless you are certain that you want to do away with the functionality that this Dell Applet offers you, the best solution would seem to be to leave things as you have now got them running. It is not an ideal solution, but it may well be the best for your circumstances.

You can try Searching the Lounge (top right hand corner of this page) for IRQL to give you some kind of flavour as to what your friend’s problem was.

It is possible that something went wrong – if he hadn’t used it for several years – as a result of the laptop’s being inactive. Advice varies in such circumstances, but it should do no harm when a laptop is unused for an extended period of time to remove the battery.

Welcome to the Lounge! Have you tried doing a Repair Install?

Somehow or other, the attachment to your post got left behind.

If you press “Edit”, just below your post, you’ll get a another chance to attach it.

Windows 7 will show itself as the C: drive as it has done already.

In Control Panel->Admin Tools->Computer Management->Disk Manager, is your Win7 drive shown entirely with a Blue border (like the Vista drive)? Or does it have a Green Border?

A Green Border means an extended partition. A Blue Border means a Primary Partition. IF Win7 is on a Primary Partition, and only if so, you can move towards merging the two partitions.

    • in reply to: Fonts #1208788

Windows 7 installs on an International basis. This means that most of the components are the same no matter what the interface language. This includes fonts.

This thread goes a fair bit away from your question, but hopefully gives you a start in sorting out which fonts you can safely remove.

The message I receive does not have the Find shown.
I’d paste the image, can’t figure out how to do it.
You can see it here on this page, scroll down a little. http://dearmicrosoftofficeteam.blogspot.com/2008/03/dear-microsoft-office-2007-team-please_03.html

If it is a matter of formatting, then it is likely that – for most practical purposes – the change in formatting would make little difference.

After all, what you are looking for is changes the client has made to the values. The format that the client chose to indicate these changes is very likely to be of less importance.

………What I forgot to mention is that I’m changing themes on a periodic time frame and did not notice the option to allow or not allow the theme from changing icons…….

      Now you tell us.

Thanks very much for clarifying & sharing your solutions.

The Search functionality in the Lounge (At The Moment) is awaiting an update.

      By using the following syntax:

      +desktop +icons +windows +7

threads one, two, three & four came up.

Hopefully, there might be a few starters there you could try.

    • in reply to: Back Up Your Files Schedule and Sleep Mode #1208442

      Welcome to the Lounge!

Two of (the many) options that exist under Control Panel->Admin Tools->Scheduled Tasks are Reactivate to Carry Out the Task (Conditions->Power-Third Item) and Carry Out the Task as Soon as Possible after a Scheduled Time has been Missed (Properties->Second Item). The Scheduled Tasks will start whatever program you nominate for whatever purpose you wish.

Can you please let us know a bit more about your circumstances and, for instance, why these two options would not work for you?

P.S. You may find the wording on your machine slightly different. I am translating from a German Language version of Windows 7.

    • in reply to: Paint Shop Changes Desktop YouTube Icons #1208161

…..In summary, Paint Shop Photo Pro X3 is changing the appearance of YouTube icons on the desktop, but leaves unchanged the icons for non YouTube URLs.

If the YouTube URL includes a file extension that PaintShop recognises as one of its “own” file extensions, then PaintShop will believe that the URL leads to a PaintShop file – not to a YouTube video. HTH
