    • in reply to: After cleaning PC still looks for virus #1105243

      All,
I think I found the problem. In doing some searching for “microsoft.exe” on my own hard-drive, I came across a file at the root of my C: drive called “autorun.inf” that automatically was to try to seek out “microsoft.exe”. There was no other information in this file other than that referring to “microsoft.exe”. Thus, I deleted the file.

I still experience the error I mentioned when mapping to the drive. So I went and looked, and guess what? That same autorun.inf file was also located at the root of the V and W drives. That, evidently, was the problem.

I deleted those files and now I can map to V and W without getting that error.

      Enjoy!!

Thanks, but this is the first thing I tried. The scan never found the files that were infected. I.E. It doesn’t work, at least not for me or anyone else who tried it.

Only the scan at F-Secure found and cleaned the affected files.

      Thanks any way!!

There is no OS file called “microsoft.exe”. This was simply a smartly named virus infected file. As I said, it has been removed. However, part of the process of this virus was obviously to look for the file when you map to a new network drive (which is where this file came from). That looking for the file is what I am trying to stop.

      Thanks!!

    • You are right. I could not make the setting stick. Any other suggestions or do you know how to make it stick with the registry (i.e. the path) so I can try? I am using WinXP Pro.

      Thanks!!

    • I would forget the “name_Left.htm” thing. It is just a product of the name_CSH.htm file. What is actually being passed is:

      file:///C:/dir1/dir2/name_CSH.htm#dir3/name.htm

The name_CSH.htm file changes this as needed to what actualy appears in the URL box based on options set.

The point is, this format works if no IE instance is open, but not after.

I tried changing the re-use existing windows option, but it had no affect.

      Any other thoughts?

      Thanks!!

No it did not. I know what you are talking about and have seen that in other situations. This was different. That is what makes me think a log file was generated somewhere on my PC.

I’ll try to do a global search and see if I can find it that way, but I have a big hard drive, so it might take a while.

I was beginning to suspect corruption. I was just hoping that you geniuses would find something else I was missing. Thanks for all the help!!

Regardless of the outcome, I learned a few things in this exchange, and I hope others will as well.

      Thanks again!!

    • I tried as much as I could to repeat the problem in the document you sent, but I could not.

I still am having problems with my document. I removed the actual text of my document and replaced it with “test” text and have attached the document. Perhaps having the actual document will help you see something I have missed.

      Thanks for your help!!

    • Perhaps I haven’t been very clear. The even page breaks work as expected.

What I would like is for the landscape page to appear on the odd or even page depending on how many pages are ahead of it.

For example, if pages 1-3 are portrait and pages and pages 4-6 are landscape, then the first landscape page should appear on page 4. If we add a portrait page so that the document now starts with pages 1-4 as portrait and and pages 5-7 as landscape, I want the first landscape page to appear on page 5.

As it is now, if I use a next page page break, the landscape pages start on an odd page no matter what. If I use an odd page break they start on an odd page no matter what. If I use an even page break, the landscape always starts on an even page. If I use a continuous page break, it messes up the page orientation in the first section, and when I fix it, the section break reverts to a Next page break behaving as I mentioned above.

Is there any way to get things to work as I mentioned in the 3rd paragraph above (starting with “For example”).

      Thanks!!

    • Sorry, I don’t know what I said that gave you the impression that it was a single page section. It is not.

In addition, the number of pages in the sections affected and the sections preceding this section are fluid. Thus, the page we are now forcing to be even could eventually need to be changed to odd. I’m trying to avoid having to make manual changes when the document changes.

      Thanks again!!

    • I consider it a workaround because Word creates the extra page so that that landscape starts on the odd page when it should start on an even page. Creating a an even section break to force it onto an even page is the only way to eliminate this extra page created by Word.

What I would like to determine is why Word is creating this extra page in the first place, and if there is any way to eliminate it other than forcing it to an even page with the Even Page section break. It seems to be tied directly to using even and odd headers/footers. If you turn this option off, it does not create the extra pages.

      Thanks!!

    • That is a good point, and provided me with a work around for now. However, I am sending this to my internal client and may not see it again before it is delivered to an external client. If they add more content that adds another page, they will have to go in and change this to an odd page break. In addition, they may have to go in and reset page setup issues for the previous section (I had to do that when I inserted the even section break and removed the previously created next page section break).

In other words, it is a lot of work for people who may not have the same experience level with word. Is there any better way so that Word does not create this extra page in the first place? Is this just a bug for the Different odd and even pages check box?

      Thanks again!!

    • in reply to: Number format as bullet in a multilevel list (Word 2003) #1032268

      (Edited by TroyWells on 07-Oct-06 22:01. )

EDIT: After restarting Word, the ChrW(61623) solution no longer works. However, the ChrW(8226) option that wasn’t working now is as well as Chr(149) with some adjustment to the size.

Could this have anything to do with whatever solutions were made previously in the Symbols dialog box? I know it shouldn’t, but I had spent time looking through this dialog box to find the symbol I wanted. Then I rebooted the system and started without making any selections and now certain options work and some do not. I am mystified.

      ————————–
After futher digging, I went back to the second post in this string from StuartR where he gave

      .NumberFormat = ChrW(61623)

as a possible solution. This, at least showed up as a bullet, not a square.

When I chose that option and then when to Format > Bullets and Numbering, it appears this is using the Symbol font. If I try to change the font to TImes New Roman, or any other font, all I get is squares.

Theory, is it possible, for some really strange reason, that multi-level lists only except items from the Symbol font where as single-level lists or single-level bullets accept any font?

I was able to make this work for me. It seems that if I specify a Font size of 8 for the bullet in the Symbol font

      ( ChrW(61623) )

it looks exactly like the TImes New Roman bullet at size 11 (or at least close enough that I can’t tell the difference).

That being said, I’d appreciate confirmation on my theory about multi-level lists only using things from the Symbol font.

Thanks again for all the help!!

    • in reply to: Number format as bullet in a multilevel list (Word 2003) #1032209

      1. If you click the Insert menu and then click Symbols . The Symbol dialog appears.
      2. In the Symbols tab, select Times New Roman in the Font list.
      3. In the Subset list, click General Punctuation .

The bullet I want is just to the left of the ellipse (…).

Hope that helps!! Thanks for your help!!
