The beeping starts AFTER WIN98 starts to load. It seems to be in response to “bad” commands.

I found the problem. I had the jumper set to MASTER. When I changed it to SINGLE (or no jumper) it works just fine. Whooo Boy!!! All is well that ends well, I guess.

    • in reply to: WIN 98 SE vs WIN ME #614816

Hey Mark, your encouragement was all I needed. Stopped the silly Compaq effort to restore – man you should see all the hoops they have you jump through – delete all partitions, then need to press CAPS LOCK on first Screen and NUM Lock on second screen and finally ALT-Q – and those instructions are only to be found if you dig deep into their support forum on line. What about the poor devil whose system has crashed and has no access to the net. And the garbage they add into the RESTORE. Got WIN 98 SE loaded, updated and all other programs up and running. System is chugging along wonderfully. Thanks again.

Windows 98 SE is the operating system. All they want to do is be able to have the two computers have access to the internet simultaneously – using a dial-up internet service provider.

    • in reply to: Sound Stutters #613411

This is a “home made” system by a local guy who buys the cheapest components he can and throws them together. At this point, I “turned off” all the windows sounds and my friend seems to be OK with that. This is a 333 mhz celeron system with 64 mb ram memory (72 pin simm) that is border line whether he should spend any money on it or just get a new system. Where would we buy the $30 sound card? Thanks for you help.

    • in reply to: Sound Stutters #613331

The sound card is integrated – it is CMEDIA as near as I can tell. Under the DEVICE MGR SOUND listing – there is the following – C-Media Softmidi Driver, DOS Mode MPU-401 Emulator, External MIDI (MPU 401)Device, SB16 Audio Device, Windows Sound System (WSS) Device and Wave Device for Voice Modem.

Wanted to let everyone know that we ran Norton AV scan and we no longer get the ISDN error message. Norton has a posting about this message – says it can be the result of the MAGISTR virus. Problem solved.

      Hey Leif,

Thanks – that did it. I went into the BIOS setup and enabled APM and all is well. Thanks for your help.

    • in reply to: Reinstall WIN 98 SE #612637

Problem solved – Hi Mark, sorry for the delay in responding to your input on SCSI. It was the Mass Storage Controller for the SCSI card. I finally got a driver to download from WINDOWS UPDATE – It is a PROMISE driver. Anyhoo, the computer now starts properly and I have no more yellow exclamation points in Device Manager. Thanks again for all your help.

    • in reply to: Chang User/Owner name #607664

      Hi Leif,
That worked fine but……. – I thot this would also change the LOGOFF reference. When I click on START, the menu opens and her name is still listed in the LOGOFF section. How do I get rid of that? Thanks in advance.

    • in reply to: Partition Magic (7.0) #605926

What we have is two hard drives – the original 2 GB and an additional 10 GB. The 2 GB is the master and the boot drive. It is almost completely full. The 10 GB has 5 GB of free space. We need to create some free space on the 2GB drive. I know I can uninstall programs from the C (2GB) drive and reinstall them onto the D (10GB) but was wondering if Partition Magic would facilitate the transfer between the two physical drives.

      Hey Mark,

SCSI – yes there is a SCSI installed – a CDRW is hooked to it. It seems to be working just fine. How does that affect things?

RE EXTRACT VIA – I used WINZIP to Extract the 4 in 1 zipped file and all I get was an EXE file – no folders or directories???

What would you like a screen shot of?? The device manager listing??

The yellow exclamation is next to a listing as follows : PCI MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER

By the way, when I turn the system on – it gets to a point and hangs and all I get is a blinking cursor. When I hit the reset button, it offers to start up in SAFE MODE but I select NORMAL MODE – it runs the SCAN DISK and starts OK. If I leave the system “set” for awhile, it seems to shut off – I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. Sometimes when I hit CTRL – ALT and DEL, It wakes back up. More often it does not. Then I have to hit the RESET button again.

      Hi Mark,

The processor is an AMD – I went to the VIA site and downloaded and installed the 4 in 1 Driver set. However, I still have a listing for MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER with a yellow exclamation point in my Device Manager listing. The motherboard is a ASUS A7V. Any suggestions?? Oh yes, I did run SCANDISK on all partitions and all seem came back OK.

    • in reply to: Reinstall WIN 98 SE #603773

      Hey Mark,
I formatted the C partition and then ran SETUP.EXE from the D partition. After a few “hangups” finally got WIN 98 installed. System is not starting properly each time. Sometimes it just gets so far and hangs up and all I have is a blinking cursor on a black screen. I am running SCANDISK on the C partition as I write this.

One of the devices missing a driver is PCI MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER. How do I find a driver for it? What is it?

      Thanks for your help.

Do you not have a startup/rescue disk set to boot and remove boot sector virii?

I presume you are talking about a Norton startup/rescue set – the problem is that I can not get any EXE files to “run”. I get an error message saying that the file is not a valid win32 application.

I have just copied the WIN98 SE installation disk to the D partition of the BAD hard drive. Could I format the C partition and then (assuming the EXE file will be executable) run the SETUP.EXE from the D drive through a DOS process?
