    • in reply to: Is program compatible with Windows 7 #1207292

I am running Microsoft Photodraw V2.0 on Win 7 32-bit Pro with no special considerations and it seems to be running perfectly, but I’ve only used it lightly so far and have not accessed all the commands and options yet.

Are you using the VIRTUAL XP to run Photodraw or did you just install it so it can be used with Windows 7?

    • in reply to: Problems opening PPS file from Vista Mail progra #1185582

In general, it’s better to save attachments to disk instead of opening them directly from an e-mail message, but see Unable to open .PPS attachments directly from Windows Mail in Windows Vista for a possible solution.

Hi Hans, I tried the regedit process and the powerpoint presentations will still not open from Windows Mail. Any other suggestions?

    • in reply to: antivirus compatible with Windows 7?? #1182885

Avast enthusiastically indicates that it has earned the Windows 7 logo! And it supports 64-bit programs.

If an AV manufacturer didn’t support Windows 7, they would very soon be out of business!

[Quite puzzled that you didn’t Google for “ChosenAVSoftwareName Windows 7″?]

I came to the Lounge rather than doing a Google search because the quality of the responses from the Lounge is always HIGH and ACCURATE. Thanks for your input.

    • in reply to: Delete Partitions & reformat #1182434

If you are going to use this as the system/boot disk then you can delete both partitions and then create and format a new partition at the start of the operating system installation, after you have booted from a CD.

If it is going to be a data disk then you can use disk manager to delete existing partitions and add the new one. You can run disk manager by Start > Run > diskmgr.msc, or by right clicking on My Computer, choosing Manage and then selecting disk manager in the left pane.

Diskmgr.msc worked just fine. Thanks for the help.

    • in reply to: Google showing up in French and Spanish #1182289

Google generally looks at your ISP location to guess your language and then redirects you to a “national” Google site (e.g., google.fr, google.es). On that page, there usually is a link toward the lower right to use the main .com site. Does that match what you see, or are you getting the main .com site in another language?

I just went to Google using my laptop and it came up in Spanish – just like the desktop did earlier. There was a link in the lower right to Google-English which I clicked on and it came up in English. This is strange – first French and now Spanish. I live in northcentral Arkansas. Hmmm?

    • in reply to: Spam Blocker #1180540

      See [post=”689661″]Post 689661[/post].

(I’ve been using SpamBayes in Outlook – I don’t use Outlook Express myself – for several years, and it works well)

Thanks for the input Hans. My friend has been told that SPAMFIGHTER from Microsoft is a good program. Do you have any experience or recommendations about it. Thanks again.

    • in reply to: Change owner name in registry #1179908

The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion key contains two string values that you can edit: RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization (the latter is usually blank for a home PC).

Hi Hans, thanks for the input. Actually I found three keys – one for RegOwner, another for RegisteredOwner and the third was RegisteredOrganization. I used the FIND command under Edit to find them and got them all changed. Thanks again.

    • in reply to: kernel32.dll is infected #1169090

Kernel32.dll is one of the core Windows files, so you cannot just remove it while Windows is running.

Any chance that you can boot the PC from an external drive, e.g. a bootable CD-ROM?

Also see How to Remove Trojan.Win32.Patched (but I assume that system restore will not be possible here).

I did a boot scan with AVAST and it found the infection but again said it could not move it to the chest or disinfect it. Is there any other antivirus program that could somehow disinfect this trojan?

    • in reply to: System Security 2009 #1167161

I see this that MIGHT help: Remove System Security 2009, removal instructions

Hi Big Al, do you think the AUTOMATIC REMOVAL tool is safe to download and use?

    • in reply to: System Security 2009 #1167160

See Remove System Security 2009/4.51 (Removal Info) For XP/Vista for instructions. Note that the name of the .exe varies from case to case – where the article mentions 05643921.exe, substitute 19409844.exe.

Hi Hans, when I click on the link in your reply, I get a window that says Firefox can not connect to the site?

    • in reply to: Avast Unable to Scan #1162796

When a friend runs AVG Scan – she gets the message at the end that AVG is UNABLE to SCAN 128 files. The file names are as follows: C:Documents &Settingsall users…sbRecovery.reg

She has three options, DELETE, MOVE or CHEST.

What should she do. Thanks for your input.

OOPS – my friend is running AVAST Antivirus – NOT AVG. Sorry for the mixup.

    • in reply to: SATA Hard Drive only shows 9 GB #1158009

I never had the drive to begin with.

      Thanks for the suggestions though.

      Joe

Hi Joe, Surprise – surprise. I had not yet recycled the hard drive and was working on another one with my drive dock so I decided to try formatting it again. Using Disk Management, I formatted it again and it came back that the formatting was successful and the drive was “healthy”. So now I have a working 232 GB hard drive. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and ideas.

    • in reply to: UNICODE (UTF-8) shows gibberish #1157816

The “gibberish” consists of Greek characters. Has your friend set Greek anywhere in her Regional and Language settings?

The Greek characters is part of the UNICODE symbols. It has latin and several other foreign language symbols. I found this out by doing a search in Wikpedia.

    • in reply to: Dual Channel Ram Memory? #1156363

Why don’t you go to the Crucial site and let them tell you what to buy. I also have a Dell 5150 and here’s what Crucial says:

This may be the same link: Memory upgrades at Crucial.com (blush – it is! Sorry Joe!)

I did go to Crucial and have determined that the memory from Newegg will work. Interesting that I can get the Crucial memory from Newegg for $7 less than directly from Crucial – and it is free shipping. Thanks to all for their help.

    • in reply to: SATA Hard Drive only shows 9 GB #1156208

See if How to use Disk Management to configure basic disks in Windows XP helps.
Much more technical – Disk Management

      Joe

Using the Disk Management process, I was able to delete both partitions and then created a single partition. Once that was done, I formatted the new partition. I got an error message saying that “the format did not complete sucessfully.” I formatted it a second time and got the same message. When I right click on the hard drive listing and then go to properties, it takes about 5 minutes to finally show it and then it said that all of the space was used (RAW). I think there is a problem with the hard drive and will dump it (properly recycled, of course).

Thanks to all for your help.
