You can use the new enhanced SET command to get user input. Not quite the same as the question you had under w98, but should achieve much the same result. You’ll need to modify your batch files slightly, since they’ll be getting the user input, rather than having it passed as a command line parameter.

Insert a set command, eg “set /p userinput=Please enter filename”, at the start of your batch file, and then use the %userinput% environment variable in lieu of %1 in the rest of the batch file.

For more details do a “set /?” in a cmd window. And you may find the Batch Files and Command Line Commands threads interesting, maybe even adding to your batch armoury.. grin

Would make sense, seeing as us “homies” aren’t supposed to know about that admin account. There’s an identical Account Unknown on my XP Home, with the exception that it’s 5.85mb, instead of 899kb like Victoria’s.

With your Start menu open, right click on the title bar, or some blank area, and select properties (the only choice given, so why not go straight there?). In properties click Customize

On the possibility of a virus being the culprit, I received the following from “CNET VIRUS & SECURITY NEWSLETTER”
1. Alert: Lirva worm exploits Avril Lavigne’s popularity

The popularity of singer Avril Lavigne has spread to the world of computer viruses. Lirva (w32.Lirva@mm), also known as Naith, will attempt to e-mail copies of itself to all contacts on an infected system, shut down all antivirus and firewall programs, and launch a Web browser to open the Avril Lavigne Web site on an infected user’s desktop.
with the following link for more info.

Maybe it’ll help, maybe not shrug Good luck in your quest!

You’re trying to download it, that’s all that you’re doing wrong. brickwall

Unfortunately things don’t seem to have improved since I tried to d/l a copy not long after it came out. I had the same problem and eventually gave up surrender and ordered the CD from MS.

PS I assume you’re on dial-up and other downloads are fine, things may be better on faster connections. If you’re on a fast connection, wait for input from someone who knows about such luxuries.

    • If you can’t resolve your problem with AVG (assuming that’s the cause), I can recommend another product in the same price bracket – AntiVir

Didn’t Woody try to some research on this a while back, via WOW? If I remember correctly, he asked people to send in details of what appeared on their CDs, docco, and displayed versions (&I recall sending my details in)> But I don’t remember seeing any results from this survey. If they’re available, that could help untangle some of this Winspeak.

    • in reply to: Editing Reminder Time field (OL 2000) #645279

This may help, even if not quite what you’re after.

When your contacts are in a table view (eg by reminder), you can use the field chooser to add the reminder time column to the view. It doesn’t give you the reminder line that’s in tasks, but at least you can enter the reminder time without having to open the contact first. Also remember “friendly” date and time entries (eg “tomorrow”) – try the answer wizard with “date time value” for more.

The proper solution probably involves forms (beyond my skill set). You may find someone here that knows enough about them to help you, or start experimenting in your spare time.

    • in reply to: Log On (WinXP Pro) #1800006

That’s just standard problem solving procedure: Ask or explain the problem to someone else, and if the solution doesn’t occur while you’re doing that, half the time you realise what the solution is about half a second after you’re done wink

A browse through the thread Batch Files might be worth while, too.

    • in reply to: Has SP1 been fixed (Windows XP Home) #645190

I agree with the ideal of OEMs providing ‘pure” Windows CDs, having been thru the joys of Gateway’s version of a “restore” disk back with w98.

My current vendor, a small local OEM, did supply me with an apparently clean XP CD. But, and I’m still trying to resolve this, they placed a sticker over the PC case lid with a statement to the effect that the 3 year warranty would be null & void if that sticker was damaged or removed ! That was after I had explicitly advised them that I wanted a tower case with plenty of room for me to add extra drives and other devices.

    • in reply to: TaskPad Views (Outlook 2002) #644984

I think you maybe up the proverbial creek without a paddle here.

The views you create in “Tasks” aren’t available for “TaskPad”. They apply to when you’re viewing the Tasks folder, only.

When you’re looking at TaskPad, you’re actually in the Calendar folder. Although you have access to your tasks in TaskPad, it’s not the full blown Tasks folder. If you look in the View menu, and your current Calendar view is “day/week/month” based, you’ll also see TaskPad View, with a drop down list of views for the TaskPad subwindow. You can modify these views if you right-click on the TaskPad heading in the window. I don’t know of a way to create additional ones for TaskPad, though.

Clear as mud? Play with it for a bit and it may start to make some sense.

Thanks, don’t have the time now, but I guess I’ll have to go back and do a full-on multi-user install for Office, since it’s now being used in a more realistic multi-user environment (XP vs 98 earlier). I did look at all that stuff when I first setup under w98, but had forgotten about it since I didn’t use it then.

And, nope, no bootlegs here, so at least that’s one problem source eliminated.

    • in reply to: SPAM -how to remove user (Outlook 2000) #644973

Create a rule for these emails/users, with at least the action “stop processing more rules”, and make sure this rule is before the “junk email rule”. That should stop the junk filter getting it’s paws on these emails.

    • in reply to: Office 2000 quits immediately on Win XP (O2K Pro SR1) #644972

Thanks, I’d missed that one somehow. Unfortunately it’s not applicable, since my CD key doesn’t start with “GC6J3”.

I guess I’ll just wait for a quiet time, do the relevant backups & take the plunge sigh.
