cool Wish I’d found out about this one while still making heavy use of batch files. Still, it may help with those few that I still deploy now & then.

No, still on SP2, but otherwise current on my main home machine & laptop. This also happens on other systems, where I’m less sure of status but unlikely to be SP3 on any that I’ve used recently.

I don’t recall anything relevant in the SP3 info I’ve seen, but if there is something specific that could help, then it might be time to take plunge (despite Woody’s misgivings).

Good question – can’t remember whether I had tried it before, or not. The result: nothing happens.

I forgot to mention earlier that I have tried Googling this, and searching the MSKB, but without luck. Either not too many others are bothered by this, or I haven’t guessed the rigth search terms. (I’m glad Stuart confirmed that it’s not just a figment of my imagination.)

Yes, it does – I forgot to mention that. Unfortunately it’s not exactly a solution when trying to keep several (neat) explorer windows open for different drives while shuffling files & folders around sad

Sometimes the “sledge hammer” is the most expedient, if not elegant solution! (Guilty of similar offences evilgrin)

I’d be interested your opinion of AWK, once you’ve had time to have a proper play with it.

    • in reply to: Cooliris (FF3) #1115272

Yep, very much “horses for courses”, etc. grin

If you leave your “preview window open, with the address bar visible, after resizing and positioning, you can drag & drop links to the address bar. The window will keep its size, shape & location (unless you get mugged by one of those recalcitrant sites that “know” what size, shape & location you “need”).

If you want to retain the settings for your main browser window, make sure you close the “preview” window before the main one.

    • in reply to: Cooliris (FF3) #1115169

hmmn I want to like this, but (first impressions) I can’t see much advantage over “middle-click” to open a new tab, or “right-click” & “Open in new window”. There maybe merit in the “Send link” (except for the need to register) and “Add to stack” functiions – I’ll give it a chance for a few days in case it grows on me as I play with its options. Colouring visited links works, but is probably a personal preference thing.

PicLens from the same crew looks more interesting, and promising in the long term, especially if more sites enable themselves to support it.

(probably redundant, but) Remember to use “Alt-PrtSc” to capture just the current dialog or window, rather than “PrtSc” alone (which captures the screen).

      Agreed. thumbup

It’s an effective lesson/reminder about the trials & tribulations of life on the “bleeding edge”. evilgrin

My approach with new OS release, service packs, and patches is “look before you leap”, just to make sure that the system survives each event. That is, check real hardware requirements, make sure drivers exist, check compatibility with critical apps, give hackers time to reveal the security issues evilgrin, etc. I do the checks via the Lounge & elsewhere on the web – not just MS specs & release info.

That is, I avoid the thrillseeker approach and let others do the pioneering for me. grin

A little plugin subforum maybe? Just a (rapidly) passing thought grin

    • in reply to: Revo Uninstaller #1114744

I’m on a constant scout for portable utlities and applications grin. They, along with the Google apps, are invaluable whether in an in-house support role, or switching between varied client sites. Maybe even valuable enough to lobby for a new forum? evilgrin

    • in reply to: Revo Uninstaller #1114734

Magic! Looks like I’ll be able to discard (or at least place in limbo) several discrete tools that do what Revo has consolidated in to a “one size fits all” Swiss army knife. I paticularly like the “Hunter” mode for ultimate convenience.

And to top it off, it’s available in a portable version as well! cheers

You could also follow up the leads from the WikipediA entry for AWK. It’s not nearly as awkward as it may appear at first glance. And it has a power and elegance that should also appeal to a BATch file afficianado grin

You can also add toolbars, including the address bar, to your taskbar. This, combined with two-row(+) layout and autohide, gives a great combination of maximum screen area, maximum taskbar area, and convenient access to any and all the shortcuts you want. Setting up folders as toolbars in the taskbar lets you have cascading flyouts to as many levels as you can cope with.

And if you can keep track of where everything lives, such toolbars, and the taskbar, can be set up on any, or all, edges of your screen, without loss of screen real estate when combined with autohide.
