Well, this just happened again on a different laptop. T430 8GB RAM Windows 10 AU. I was able to get into the event log after trying to restart the firewall and getting error code 5 on the failure.

The Windows Firewall service terminated with the following service-specific error:
      Access is denied.

      My id is an Administrator.

      Any new thoughts anyone!!!

      Sudo15 –

Running Sophos AV since day 1. This problem cropped up about 3 days ago.

It took about 25 minutes but sfc reported no errors.

      Firewall still does not start.

There was nothing in the status report except for the message that said 100% complete.

      Any thought on next steps??

Thank you for your reply but the troubleshooter was of no help whatsoever.

    • I’ll take a look but this being New Year’s weekend, I likely won’t be back to you for about a week or so

    • System is clean or so says Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Sophos AntiVirus. It’s the only app affected (so far).

After poking around on my laptop a bit (and reading some things suggested holdum333, I discovered that Revo did NOT completely remove FF from my system. I deleted the FireFox folder in my AppData and reinstalled. So far this worked. Now on the re-customizing FF – a chore, but not a big one.

      Thanks for the insight.

    • in reply to: Turning my computer off #1524091

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away (as in the early IBM mainframe days) a service engineer admonished me to not touch the Power button – that is, leave the system running. I’ve taken that advice to heart and I now never turn off my machines.

I’m currently running a 10 year old desktop that has been migrated from Win XP to Win 8.1 (with all of the stops in between). I built a server in 2008 which is currently running Windows Server 2012. I have a small netbook running Win 8.1. There is a older Lenovo W500 and two very late model Lenovo T series laptops as well. With the exception of the netbook, these systems are never, ever turned off – well not “never”. The desktop and server have been upgraded and moved occasionally which does require a power off/power on cycle. The laptops, of course, have batteries and the server and desktop are both connected to a UPS so power outages are never a problem for me.

Of course, there is a concern (or used to be a concern) about charge recycles for the battery powered units that are plugged in and charging. I’ve found that the intelligent battery circuitry and the Lenovo Power Manager installed on the 3 Lenovo units do a fine job in keeping the batteries healthy.

So, I would suppose the the almost 50 year old advice about not powering down is still valid – unless you are concerned about your electric bill.

    • in reply to: KeePass on Android #1509302

I’ve been using KeePass on all of my Android devices (2 phones and a tablet) as well as all of my Windows PCs (3 of them) for about 3 1/2 years. I couldn’t be more satisfied with the product. In fact, I was so satisfied with it that I actually sent the author a donation!!

What I especially like about the product is that the data base is encrypted so I have no qualms about storing it in my non-public area in DropBox. It really simplfies synchronization between devices.

You won’t go wrong with it – and it’s free!!!

    • I’ve been using T’Bird for a very long now and while not an expert I could certainly be called a Power User. Have you tried adding after all of the copy rules as the very last action a Delete action? Be very careful to restrict this to the Sent folder.

I think Chris is right on with his update philosophy.

I’ve been working in the IT industry for over 45 years – on all types of platforms (IBM Mainframe, Mid-range systems running AIX, UNIX, Linux, Windows Server, and desktops running both Linux and Windows – and the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy is one that has been adopted my most large scale enterprise grade IT departments – and it applies to hardware fixes as well as software.

While I’m certainly not the Super Tech I once was, I’ve always subscribed to the “let someone else test the fixes first” attitude. For my own personal Windows 7 computers (I have 3 of them, not counting my wife’s and my at home domain controller) I will always “age” updates for at least 75 days after release on the not always valid assumption that if something goes wrong with an update, Micro$oft will fix it quickly.

Again, Chris is right on !!!!!!!

    • I discovered that I needed the .msc in Win7 64 bit on my laptop.

    • in reply to: Vista Power Management #1287376

Thanks – but I’ve done all that – prior to making my original post.

The issue doesn’t appear to be the settings – the issue appears to be how Vista is reacting to battery signals from the hardware.  My critical battery setting is 10% and windows is instructed to take no action.  In my current problem, the system is shutting down (not sleep or hibernate but power off) with a battery charge significantly greater than 10%.
