      You should be able to locate the uninstall utility in Firefox Folder { …Program FilesMozilla Firefoxuninstalluninstall.exe }
      or equivalent.

    • in reply to: W98 Protection Error #622252

      I suspect you mean CONFIGMG.VXD?
A google search found this explanation http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/update/vmm32vxd.html%5B/url%5D and an article (in German) http://www.wintotal.de/Tipps/Eintrag.php?RBID=2&TID=475%5B/url%5D showing the extraction command as “extract I:win98win98_45.cab configmg.vxd c:”

Note on my Win98SE the file is ONLY in the directory “c:windowssysbackup”

I guess my hardware doesn’t need it.

      Hope that helps.

    • in reply to: RealOne Question #622250

      BigAl,
      Not quite.
I removed the older version before reading the links – I then checked for TkBellExe before installing V2.

The registry keys were ADDED by the new install – but as I said, not the program EVNTSVC.EXE.

If you check the keys, you’ll ntice that TkBellExe is all one word – not a program filename.

As I don’t use it much – Im happy to delete the keys anyway and see what happens.

It’s just that I have no idea what these keys do, nor do I pretend to understand the format.
      -2147483646 is 0x80000002 (Flags perhaps?).
What effect do two the vertical bars have in a data entry – { logical OR } ??

    • in reply to: RealOne Question #622209

I wasn’t intending to upgrade – but since you asked.
After removing the old version, I installed “RealOnePlayerV2Gold”.

      The EVNTSVC.EXE was not (re)installed.

However, after reading Bat17’s links I checked for “TkBellExe” and there was a key entered under HKLMSoftwareCLASSESSoftwareRealNetworksUpdate6.0PreferencesComponentsRNAdmin:0.1Reg0

      And the related HKCRSoftwareRealNetworksUpdate6.0PreferencesComponentsRNAdmin:0.1Reg0

      with the data
      -2147483646|SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun|TkBellExe

I have no idea what these do as there is nothing under any “real” keys:-
      HKxxSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

No hits on a search for TkBell*.* either.

    • in reply to: RealOne Question #622148

Just checked my “other PC” – has RealOne installed and the file is there!

However, it is an older version (RealONePlayerGold) and not version 2.

Here’s an extract from PROGRAM FILESCOMMON FILESREALUPDATE_OBRealPlayer-log.txt :-
Starting the installation of component: RNAdmin
      Copying file: C:Program FilesCommon FilesRealUpdate_OBrndal.exe
      Copying file: C:Program FilesCommon FilesRealUpdate_OBevntsvc.exe
      Copying file: C:Program FilesCommon FilesRealUpdate_OBrnad3201.dll

Thanks for the reminder to “recycle it” grin

    • in reply to: Recommendations for large-file ZIP program? #613832

There is an indication (sort of)..
If the table mentions DOS – it has to have a command line interface!

Plus, there are links for any you want to read more about.

I am deliberately avoiding giving a specific recommendation as I haven’t used any of the “free” ones in anger – either command line or GUI.

    • in reply to: Recommendations for large-file ZIP program? #612225

Check out the Archiver Comparison Test site http://compression.ca/act-win.html%5B/url%5D for a list of archivers and their features.

I suppose with “self extraction” you don’t necessarily need ZIP format?

    • in reply to: Find Taskbar or Tray Folder #609275

If it cannot be found in startup, then it is probably executed from within the registry.

Mistakes in here can “kill” windows – so at being very careful crossfingers check at
      HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion

      either of these keys:

      RunServices
      Run

      HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
May also be under HKCY [HKEY_CURRENT_USER]

    • in reply to: Limited User cannot log in (2002) #594462

Unsure if these are relevant, but:-

      MSKB article:
Logon Screen Appears to Stop Responding After Several Unsuccessful Password Attempts (Q283198)
      http://support.microsoft.com/search/previe…b;en-us;Q283198%5B/url%5D

      Basically, this is “by design”

      Another MSKB article:

Failure Events Are Logged When the Welcome Screen Is Enabled (Q305822)
      http://support.microsoft.com/search/previe…b;en-us;Q305822%5B/url%5D

which refers to “Account Logon failure audits” which can cause “bad logon attempts”!

Maybe, you are encountering a combination of these?

    • in reply to: Customize contacts email (Outlook 2000 SR1) #592199

I originally thought I had the same problem – then in the “Check Names” (Change to) dialogue I noticed the horizontal scroll bar.

Clicking on this to scroll to the right displayed the full email address!

      Does that help?

    • in reply to: PowerPoint, Word, and Excel won’t open (2000 SP-1) #592194

Is it possible that the PowerPoint Window has just been “moved” off-screen?

What happens if you Right Click on [empty space on] TaskBar and select one of the “Cascade” or “Tile” options.

    • in reply to: Can’t view just one webpage #589747

Yes both “articles” are the same – I was just giving a alternate description as the KB was pulled (as rmrucker pointed out).

You shouldn’t need to uninstall ZA Pro – you can just use its shutdown.

You could ask the bank to check (from one of their PCs) if this patch/IE6/Win98 combination does actually work ?

When you deleted your cookies, did you have to re-register or just log-in again. This “patch” has caused some problems with email accounts – users had to recreate their account from scratch to get access.

Is this approach possible with your on-line banking access?

If you want to keep checking yourself, there are some rather drastic measures you could try:

      a) Create a new user account under Windows on your PC and use that to access the bank – this would eliminate all the cookie/temporary internet file possibilities.

My suggestion of using another browser was a way of immediately identifying the “patch” as the problem.
Check with the bank which browsers they support if necessary.

      c) Alternatively, you can’t uninstall the IE patch but you could uninstall IE6 (revert back to IE5/IE5.5)?

I’m assuming you need access to the account and not necessarily keep fighting to find a fix.

    • in reply to: How to check for hotmail account? #589742

      Just a thought – you could check for “cookie”(s) from Passport.com and Hotmail.com [Msn.com ].

Of course if you clean/delete cookies then it won’t mean anything, but if you don’t… ?
