    • in reply to: split/stitch files #1230397

      (2) does anyone know of a program that splits a large file into parts that then can be put back together by a computer challenged user? There used to be a DOS program split/stitch that would span a file over several floppy disks back in the day and I’m looking for something similar.

      Have a look at
      HJSplit or GSplit

As you imply that Firefox itself is working – what error message(s) are you getting ?
Also check your firewall (remove the allowed/trusted entry for Firefox) then start Firefox again – Firewall should then ask if it is to be allowed.

    • in reply to: FireFox 3.6x and Opanda EXIF viewer plugin #1230393

Thanks- I followed the instructions but it did not work. I changed “2.0” to “3.6” but it still did not work (the current version is 3.6.3). I also changed it to 3.0 but it still does not work.

      Try reading http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updating_add-ons
      a) Verify your version modification
      b) Try disabling version checking (at your own risk of course).

    • in reply to: Javascript not apparently working in Firefox 3.6 #1228476

If it’s only some sites and not others, I’d have you consider how recently you updated Java or JRE on your computer.

He thinks the problem is Javascript – this is not the same as Java.

Paul: Have you verified the problem using Firefox “safe” mode (to eliminate extension/theme interference)?

A specific example (or two) which do not require a login would be helpful ..

    • in reply to: WinZip vs. 7-Zip #1219092

I am using a licensed copy of WinZip (older 9.0) and like the context menus that it comes with. You can right click a file and add it to a new or existing zip file. If format is a issue, you can always create a self extracting file. If you need to burn to CDs or DVDs you can use WinZip to set the file size and span multiple discs.

All available with the other programs I mentioned as well.

    • in reply to: WinZip vs. 7-Zip #1216673

I am still waiting to get the additional information regarding what type of files we will be archiving. I know, though, that the files will be transmitted to a 3rd party. When I get a response from the employer, I will attempt to update this query.

Don’t forget to ask your third party which formats they use/require.

I use PowerArchiver (as mentioned by jscher2000, which includes a licece for the command line version PACL ) as a personal preference, for business use I would prefer a well supported (may mean paid license) utility; so suggest you should also consider WinRar and possibly Stuffit.

    • in reply to: WinZip vs. 7-Zip #1216402

Well, 7zip is free (even for business use) and WinZip is not.

For further recommendations you would need to provide more info e.g.
What type of files are you wanting to archive?
Is this for transfer to 3rd party or only for your own use?
      – does the archive format matter ?
      Is this for safety/backups?

      etc.

    • in reply to: Need desktop Flash reader #1212808

I then tried Flash Movie Player (FMP) (http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/flash_movie_player/)

I verified that I have the Adobe Flash Player installed at:
      http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

      Which returned:
      You have version 10,0,45,2 installed

Not tried either but from eolsoft FAQ:-
Q: When I try to run the program, it tells me each time that it requires “Macromedia Flash Player plugin”, which I already have..

A: If you fully confident you can view flash in the browser, but Flash Movie Player doesn’t want to start, it seems you are not using Internet Explorer as a default internet browser :). Some browsers (Opera, for example) install Flash plugin only for itself, not for the whole system. Try to navigate to the Macromedia’s flash installation verification page using Internet Explorer, and you’ll know the real information about Flash Plugin in your system.

So check flash page with I.E. and NOT Firefox (as they use different plug-ins).

    • in reply to: Firefox 3.5.7 and Adblock Plus #1207607

      Hi, agaian –

I think I discovered what was wrong: in Tools/Options/Content, the “Load Images Automatically” was unchecked….

But, it would be good to know how to undo Adblock choices…..

Not sure what you mean – perhaps Adblock has it’s own configuration/preferences settings (right click on the Adblock Plus Icon).
Use this – not Firefox configuration/options.

    • in reply to: Fresh View #1207479

If you mean this “freshdevices” site, I am almost instantly cautious as it offers free driver tuneups & pc tuneups. While this site may be completely innocent, such offers on other sites are known to be methods of installing malware on unsuspecting machines. In short: personally I would be disinclined to test such software – even though it may be a harmless image viewer.

Depends on your definition of harmless
The utility is OK – but you need a code (freely provided) and they constantly send you emails – then you need to renew the registraion (and revalidate your email every month or so).

I had a few of their utilities (View / Download etc) installed but eventually gave up after multiple “you need to reregister” cycles.

    • in reply to: IZArc archiving program FREE #1176410

I also tried it a couple of years ago. Had “issues” with file associations which IZArc repeatedly “hijacked”.
Checked out their forum and was concerned was the number of posts with no response.
At the same time I was looking at PowerArchiver which was my final choice.

Edit: Should note PowerArchiver is not free.

    • in reply to: splitting/zipping .bkf file (XP-SP3) #1130999

The file could be split – either immediately (using e.g. HJSplit http://www.freebyte.com )
or almost any zip utility (don’t compress just “store”) -these use the terminology of either “split” or “span”.
However, you would need to join the files again before you could perform the restore.

    • in reply to: FLV Player #1129787

VLC has a “loop” button when advanced controls is activated.
There is also a repeat option when using a playlist.

    • in reply to: Associated Programs (Home Premium) #1124637

      Chuck
Looking at the screen shot you provided, the file is being sent to you as “application/octect stream”.
This is coming from the site and is incorrct for a Word document (doc or docx).

I suggest you contact the site support and ask them to correct the “mime type”.
