It sounds as though you have a missing reference.

To fix it, open some VBA Code. Open your references (Tools | References). Look for one that says it’s missing.

Note its name. Deselect it and close the References box.

Re-open the References box, and re-select the reference.

Close the box, and you should be back in business.

Could you open the Message Box using acDialog? That might cause the code to wait for a response from the user. Then, continuing with .Activate so Word comes up…
