Chris is right but a fix may involve some “shotgun” tactics. If a replacement utility will work without causing a blue screen and not affect any other processes, that’s a good permanent patch, not just a band aid and the first course of action. Get out the heavy equipment only if needed.

Just uploaded an image, seems to work fine at least for jpg. Are you sure you’re not exceeding the file limit size?

Are you running 32 or 64-bit? If 64, it sometimes reports incomplete or confusing results since two lists (32-bit and 64-bit) of things are being kept and it doesn’t always combine them but I don’t know if this is such a problem or not.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Home Premium is all I need #1193981

I agree with everything pretty much straight through, even Picasa, PS7 and Photodraw 2 (though mine is V2 but maybe its the same thing). The only quibbles maybe are the pre-order price wasn’t a great bargain–it was close to fair and what the upgrade price should be. The normal upgrade price is actually the retail price…because who hasn’t owned and run a previous version of Windows at this point? Very few people. I like Win 7 pro and $200 for the upgrade is NOT an upgrade price, its a retail price. Also, Vista has gotten to the point of respectability with SP2 but its far too little and far too late of course to heal that wound and finally, I still love the heck out of what I can do with XP. It takes a few more add ons and utilities to do some of the things Win 7 can now do natively but those utilities and supplemental programs are often much more capable than those in Win 7 are at this point, but if I were forced to move over to Win 7 completely, I could handle that as well..not going to happen at $200 a pop though.

I don’t remember how, but there is a way to hide drives in Win7.

I think that’s only if the drive is empty. Its an option in the advanced folder options menu list.

Not sure what is meant by ‘link to one of these.’ Do you mean to a page where the entry boxes and text in them is tiny in IE? If so, remember, it works fine in Firefox so its definitely a local problem, but as an example I just activated a ROKU box and the Netflix sign in email and password entry fields were tiny, as the screen cap shows (I typed HELP ME !!!!! in the email entry).

There’s a more advanced version of the SRH shareware utility that might be a viable substitute. http://download.cnet.com/USB-Safely-Remove/3000-2248_4-10530962.html?tag=mncol

If everything goes right, it should be very easy. Start the install disc while in XP and go custom and follow through with where to install the OS. Since Windows 7 is the latest iteration of Windows it will be aware of the XP install and automatically add it to the boot menu.

    • in reply to: Tiny data entry fields, everything else normal #1193661

As stated, changing font or text size alters all text on the pages exept in the data entry fields. I’ve discovered some settings I never knew existed but this doesn’t seem to be one of them.

You can also install 7 clean in the same directory volume that Vista resides in. All you do is choose Custom from the menu (booting to the Win7 upgrade install disc) and advanced and have it format the hard drive before installing itself. Because Vista is still there prior to installation, win 7 will recognize that and no further proof is needed that it’s an upgrade.

    • in reply to: Windows Desktop Wallpaper Loads Only & Hour Glas #1193249

How long has Google desktop search been on? That has been known to occasionally lock up or severly slow down a system like this but I see other candidates as well. Is taskbar shuffle out of beta?

Sometimes it can even be a combination and a start up delay control program can do the trick.

Or it might be a problem with windows itself and running chkdsk a couple of times and possibly even a repair install will be needed.

    • in reply to: Windows networking – LAN broken if no Internet #1193195

Have you tried a different router and/or the standard #.#.#.1 gateway address with the same results? Its hard to troubleshoot well since you can’t also get into the modem. Nothing on the network has a static I.P with a lower number than the gateway does? And the router has had the I.P ranges adjusted or limited accordingly? Seems to keep coming back to the router having a spaz when the Internet goes down ultimately, either from some setting or malfunction.

    • in reply to: Installing HD from another Computer #1193186

The new hardware of the new system is not going to be compatible with the old OS’s drivers for the old system’s hardware, but it may still boot if the SATA driver is compatible and if it does then Win 7 will probably do a good job of adjusting the driver set based on its inspection of the new system’s hardware. If you do get that far then you could use the BIOS to change which OS you wanted to boot to by changing the hard drive boot order accordingly. Or, instead of Vista (Win7) BootPro, I would use a similar program called EasyBCD. Run that while in the new OS and use it to edit the bootloader by adding an entry for the old OS. Then you’ll get the boot option menu at startup to more easily choose which OS to boot to.

    • in reply to: Get Pictures from a Nero Video #1193147

If its a slideshow video of images on the CD always put the CD in a computer and explore the CD for a folder that contains a set of the original photos that were used in the video. If its there, problem solved, if not, then you’ll have to go through the extraction or snapshot process, which won’t be too good for quality but it will be something at least.

Many media players (VLC, GOM, KMPlayer) can be used to take snapshots automatically or manually and save them automatically to a hard drive for further processing after capture.

    • in reply to: How do I rollback Win7 Pro trial version to XP3 #1193000

If you do try a rollback, maybe with the guidelines in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=933168&SD=tech, treat it as if it were a new install and have all data backed up and be prepared for a new install if it doesn’t turn out well.

If it were my system, I was backed up and had Plan B ready, I would give it a try and see if I could make Plan A work, but if time was limited and I wanted it to work for sure, I’d go straight to Plan B.
