What resize filter(s) does Image Resizer PowerToy use? Faststone Image Viewer (mentioned earlier) is my favorite for a couple of reasons, namely the batch process is very powerful allowing for much more than just image resizing and concerning the image resizing in particular, it uses the Lanczos3 resize filter and that’s my favorite by far, so far.

I’m wondering about the need for context menu option (speed and ease of use). I use the xnView explorer shell context menu and it has many additional options for photo handling including resize but I never use them, especially now that competent email packages include photo resize , link attachment and background upload.

Is there a way to have Explorer not try to connect when a connection is not possible?

Seperate profiles is an easy solution also. One can share as much or as little as one wants between two user profiles yet easily keep mapped drives off the list when they’re not there. Its a good general practice when the same computer is introduced to environments where configuration data is different, especially for network and Internet connections, security protocols and changes in drives available and manner of access to those drives.

The install DVD is about what, 2.3 gigs or so? If you you’ve only installed a few utilities it seems very reasonable that Windows 7 could tuck it all back into 1 DVD. I haven’t tried it myself yet to see the particulars of the process.

I don’t know, I tried the steps I posted and it jumped right into notepad for editing when I went back to Live Mail.

You don’t mean the Click items as follows section under the General tab in Folder Options do you?

I know that’s one place where if its set to Double click to open an item then it takes a single click to select or highlight it and just hovering the mouse pointer sort of outlines the item and it won’t activate the choice unless double-clicked.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor #1194227

Maybe it said 32-bit only because the upgrade advisor was detecting a 32-bit installed OS, and of course, a 64-bit upgrade cannot be used in that situation unless you are going to do a custom install and basically do a clean or side-by-side install so the 32-bit and the 64-bit streams never cross.

I did not know that either, works well when I have a full or most of a full screen to stretch the address window out enough to see the full path. Unfortunately it doesn’t work so well in comparitive mode. I can at least click inside and drag back to the begining to see it, but of course that’s not as good as just being able to see it all straight off. If I unlock the toolbars and drag the search window as small as it will go I can get most of it on most of the time and 1920 horizontal pixels to work with helps.

Now if you can tell us how to make the pathway display the default, or turn it on in the title bar again without resorting to CCM (crippled classic mode) so we could get the best of both worlds. The only joy I get out of the breadcrumbs trail is when I go into a folder I’m going to delete then step it out again, delete the folder from another window and then hit the back button on the step out window. What?! You can’t find the folder? It was there just a minute ago. Have another look…still not there eh…well I guess you won’t be joining Skynet this month there little buddy!

The loss of complete pathway display in favor of the breadcrumb method is not an improvement when browsing syncronized folders in multiple windows on multiple systems. Seems like I spend half my time verifying locations prior to any sort of transfers or modifications now since that’s not the kind of mistake one wants to make with important documents.

Try this then if you haven’t. Go into Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Associations and find the .htm file. Highlight it and click on Change Program… and set it to Notepad.

Then go back to Live Mail and see if it works.

That seems to have worked as far as IE goes. There is an older version of WindowBlinds on that system. The person who uses the computer all the time prefers Avant as the default browser and I thought that would revert to normal size as well since its basically just a skin with IE being used as the engine. It definitely has something to do with WindowBlinds because if I unload it, the entry fields and text expand without even so much as a refresh. However, if I go into WindowBlinds and specify it not to skin Avant and just leave it unchanged, the fields are still small.

So I might try updating the Stardock management software even though the new Impulse is a bit annoying in that it throws up little text bubbles from time to time about what game or Stardock program is on special. One of the MyColors themes may not inflict this problem and keep the color contrast levels good for extended viewing.

Thanks for the assist so I can send in the offense for a change.

I get the same thing and someone may know the procedure when in Live Mail for associating the filetype. You should have a My Stationery folder in your user documents (if not you can search specifically for one of the filenames and find the location) that you can access directly and either edit the background picture or the htm file.

    • in reply to: Windows 7 Home Premium is all I need #1194115

One of my Win7 installs is virtual and runing in XP Pro with 1 gig of memory. Its a little slower than my virtual XP install running in Vista, but not much slower. Its also a good point made by the OP about reduction and simplification (we still spend way to much time at the computer, and its only going to get worse) if enough new features and backward compability are built into a new OS to allow for it.

The explosion of highly competent free programs (an important consideration since any additional cost would not be advantageous in OS comparisons when one can perform that task and the other can’t without the free program) that both modify and supplement an OS in the last decade has made if very difficult for any new OS and its heralded advancements to supplant an older OS based soley on comparisons of competency. For example, XP doesn’t even have the ability to burn DVDs on its own, 7 does, however, if I install CDBurnerXP, or ImgBurn, or Burn4Free or Nero 9 Lite, or…suddenly I’ve made XP a more competent DVD burning OS than Win 7, without shoring up 7’s capability in the same manner. Same applies to file encryption, GUI modification, partition management, imaging and backup, security, and on and on.

It surprised me on how little Windows 7 offered until I thought about it for a while and realized how much additional sofware I use to supplement all my computer activities. Everyone talks about how rich and diverse, and how the App. Store makes an iPhone what it is now…well, welcome to the world of Windows!!

All add ons disabled and compatibility mode turned on, It remains stubbornly entrenched as an area built for Lilliputians.
