You really are at the mercy of social media nowadays. You need it, but there’s only so much you can do to navigate Facebook or whatever and avoid all the junk. I was off of social media for a while, now I’m back on it. Now, I’ve noticed if I enter my name in a search, I get all kinds of links to websites with my current address, past addresses, relatives, voting records and phone number. It even offers to make you a map to my house if you want it.

I think Google and twitter has become at least 50% spam now.

Great Article! Just exactly what I needed to work on my project. I don’t know what I’d do without you guys newsletters sometimes!

    • I dabble with video files pretty often. I have a lot of files on my personal computer, and many more in storage that I’ve pulled from the web and from dvd’s that are in the audio_ts and video_ts format.

I used to use dvdshrink back in the day when everone used XP and ripping DVD’s was the thing. I still use InfraRecorder as a software to make all of the video_ts files back into an iso file. I also still use VLC sometimes, and I still use ImgBurn as my primary DVD & CD burner software. (be careful if you install that one) I use DVD Flick all of the time. It still installs on W7, W8 and W10 – works well. I use 7zip to extract files directly from and iso file – 7zip also pulls apart exe files and many others BTW. I have all of this stuff installed on my computer for regular use.

I have used Daum Potplayer as my primary video player for a few years now. I think it works really well. I convert files from the .VOB format to .Mp4 pretty often. I am currently messing around with Handbrake to convert a video file to .Mp4 and leave out the lines. I keep running into problems like making a huge, huge video file. Making it look right. Takes forever.. https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/DeinterlacingGuide

      I use comand line to merge all of the video files like this: “C: copy /b VTS_01_1.VOB + VTS_01_2.VOB + VTS_01_3.VOB + VTS_01_4.VOB + VTS_01_5.VOB FILE.VOB” where FILE.VOB is literally the result of VTS_01_1.VOB + … + VTS_1_5.VOB attached end to end, one after the other.

      You can use the copy /b A.ext + B.ext + C.ext File.ext for all kinds of files.

I have not yet gotten to the point where I can edit those video files like OP was asking. Cutting out a little piece of of the video file, just to have for regular use. I used to do that with older versions of NERO, but I have not yet found a current free software solution for that particular proble. I’ll try and post a solution somewhere know when I solve that one!

Have you tried this Lenovo update? http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-73695 — It was released on 9/3/2015 and I think it is optional, but it may
make Windows 10 work for you. You might execute the update on one of your Thinkpads and see what happens. After installing this update you might just complete the winows 10 installation over the internet automatically, which is a good idea. I’ve known a few folks who just let the Win10 upgrade process run it’s course, sometimes it takes a couple days. If it doesn’t work because of hardware issues, it seems to revert to the old Win7 or Win 8 install with no ill effects.

It looks like the device you are talking about is listed there: Supported Systems – ThinkVantage System Update is supported on the following systems:
      Lenovo 3000 C100, …
      Lenovo 3000 J10…
      *All ThinkPad*

I would download the README file first and check it out as well.

Before you do this, I would make sure I could get all of the drivers and stuff for chipset and modem and a few other things. I show that manuals/drivers for a lattitude E5430 are here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/latitude-e5430/drivers

*You MUST back up anything that you want to keep on that Hard disk before you do this, deletes all the files and reformats the whole disk!*

This stuff is fun, but it can be a little challenging if you’ve never done it. Your notebook could be down for quite a while. It’s entirely up to you.

Insert USB or DVD. Click ‘install now’ — Now, what you want to do, is right when you get that Windows Setup box, it says “which type of installation do you want?” you need to select “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)” — next you get a box that says “where do you want to install windows?” select “Drive options (advanced)” — now you’ll see little rows listing the partitions. Like: Drive 0 partition 1: system reserved 350 MB ….. you can select the partitions by moving up and down, they are highlighted blue.

Select each of those partitions and delete them one at a time. Then click “format” and then click “new”. The windows setup box will fill up with 3 or 4 new partitions. That gets rid of the old MBR and replaces it with a GPT table. Click next and it will start installing windows.

Have you run the Disk cleanup tool or deleted any any system files by hand? Has it been more than a month since your Windows 10 upgrade? Windows 10 often deletes old files (like C:Windows.old) after 4 -5 weeks to make free space. This will complicate reverting back to the previous version.

It’s also possible to go to Microsoft Recovery : “https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/home” and get your old version there. You will have to have your old product key. There might be a way to use one of those product key recovery tools to find your Windows 7/8/8.1 Serial number.

You can get a free download of Win 8.1 Windows Installation Media Creation Tool: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media — you might have to call Microsoft for phone activation.

      Windows 7 resources here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

To revert to an earlier install or repair your OS.

      open the Start menu.

      select: Settings

you will see: Update & security

      select: Recovery

      You should see:

      – “go back to Windows 7” (or Win8 or Win8.1, Microsoft will ask you why you want to go back)

      – “Reset this PC” (if your PC isn’t doing well this might help)

Click the Get started button and select one of these.

I produced a high quality 3 Gig bootable Windows 10 iso file with its own product key just like you would purchase at the MS store. This is why we subscribe to Windows Secrets. Very pleased.

      Thanks Fred!

“Windows is a slow-moving train that’s getting passed by mobile devices based on iOS and Android. Office simply can’t follow the same time track as Windows and stay competitive” Not sure if I completely agree.. Based on what I’m seeing at big retailers like Office Depot, Walmart, Best Buy and others there are a plethora of Tablets, Net-books and even a few more phones that are running windows 8.1. In fact when I opened the sales fliers in my morning newspaper on Black Friday, probably 75% of the high tech devices in the fliers were using Windows.

Love your articles Woody. Keep them coming.

I did have trouble with the android-x86-4.3-20130725.iso described in the article for some reason.

I did go and recheck my Virtual box installation and the android iso I mentioned. After rebooting my PC and taking some time to let things work on their own, I was able to resolve my issue. It must have just been my Virtual box installation, or something I missed. This Android OS operates just fine, as do the install scripts apparently. Apologize for not coming back sooner to correct my earlier claim.

I liked this article “How to run Google’s Android OS on a Windows PC”. I have been using VMware player on my home PC for some time. I’ve wanted to move on to Virtual Box for a while now, since VirtualBox has more features, and is more widely used.

Following Fred Langa’s directions, I got it up and running tonight, it looks great! I was able to get Linux Mint running and a version of Android. I did have trouble with the android-x86-4.3-20130725.iso described in the article for some reason. Following the guide, I was able to get pretty much anything to boot and run correctly, from Ubuntu to Manjaro Linux with Openbox and most of the Android iso files that I ran across on the internet. I suspect there is some issue with the android-x86-4.3-20130725.iso file that I downloaded from here: https://code.google.com/p/android-x86/downloads/detail?name=android-x86-4.3-20130725.iso&can=2&q=

I’ve now downloaded it twice and checked the files SHA1 Checksum both times, and it will not boot correctly. I can get to the step: “Installation — Install Android-x86 to hard disk” and then press Enter.

After that I get an endless loop. Anyone else have this problem?
