I have Windows 10 and my computer does not meet them requirements to upgrade to 11. I don’t plan to buy a new computer and I want to keep Windows 10 because I have a specific hardware modem that I need to keep using for text based communication.

How do I secure my system so it will not get taken over  but still allow me to use it for communication?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 5. I also have paid for M S Office 2016 which is installed on my PC and includes a copy for a mobile device such as a phone or tablet. There is supposed to be a version of M S Office that runs on Android, but every time I have tried to intall Word on my Note 5, the download will not even start because it shows “The current version of Word is Not Compatable With Your Device” (or similar messge). I have installed OfficeSuite Professional by MobiSystems, Inc. and it works just like M S Office. If you already have a Microsoft online account set up, you can install other M S apps that sync your docs just like your pc does and read them on either device. If you have Amazon Prime, they have lots of “Actually free” Android apps you can download. Don’t let M S hold you hostage for a few software applications, get the Samsung phone and you will be a lot happier. I am sure they will eventually release Word for my Android device, but I really don’t even need it now. I use Consumer Cellular and recommend them highly.

First, make sure you have the installation CD from either Microsoft or the computer manufacturer. If you have the original CDs, proceed. IF the restore is stored on the same hard drive, you need to do the restore from the drive so do not erase it. Having said that…

Western Digital makes a utility that will write zeros to your entire drive. It takes a little longer to do this, but it will get rid of ghost-like things that seem to linger even after doing a reinstall. I did a repair install once and afterward still had the same problem, so used the Western Digital Data Lifeguard program and wrote zeros to the entire drive and reinstalled everything and the problem went away.

You can call Microsoft and order the Windows XP SP3 update on a CD or DVD. It is good to have the hard copy of the update because you won’t have to download the multi-megabite updates again. Just be sure to run Windows Update even after using the XP SP3 update because there are a lot of new updates since SP 3 was released. Also consider using Firefox for your browser.

External hard drives are really cheap now, and if you buy one you can use it to copy your My Documents folder and things like pictures to the external drive and also your Address Book, your Contacts, any work you want to save and your e-mails. There are two different places to check for contacts. (1) Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories and then Address Book. Once the Address Book is open, click File then Export, then Address Book (.WAB) and follow the screen prompts. If there is an option during this process to include sub-folders, check it.

Then.. (2) Open Outlook Express and do basically the same export through Outlook Express. Export the file to your new external hard drive or flash drive and you can copy the contacts to any Windows computer you use, and have a permanent copy of your contacts so you don’t have to re type everything if your system crashes or you get a new machine. After dong the reinstall, open the address book and use the import option and all your contacts will be back exactly like they were before the re-installation. You can export it to your desktop and burn it to a cd also.

You can also save the updated drivers to the external drive and after you get everything working again, use a program like Acronis True Image to make a disk image on the external drive, which can be restored any time you have a problem. Just make sure you save anything you created since the re-installation, including your contacts info to your external drive, or the new info will be lost.

You did do a backup (disk image) just after installing XP SP3 and all the updates, right? I had a similar problem a couple weeks ago and used a disk image to revert to a good state and it fixed whatever it was that was wrong. I noticed the problem started just after installing last months windows update security fixes. Your problem didn’t start on the second Wednesday of last month did it?

    • in reply to: Connectivity Speeds not as Advertised #1296494

Is this the place where I can find settings that I should use for network connections? My ATT connection was very slow (about 4kb/sec, my old dial up speed) and with my High Speed DSL connection is supposed to be (I think) 386 kbs. I called ATT about the slow connection speed and after over three hours on the phone, they said the connection was fine on their end and the problem was in my computer. They then offered to sell me an annual subscription for $49.95 to fix the problem. I informed the person on the phone I would switch my ISP before I paid them fifty bucks to fix my connection. After I hung up, I messed around with the settings in the LAN network connection by clicking on the dual computer screen icon in the tray, then selecting properties, then in the local area connection properties window that opened, I selected configure for the LAN connection that is built into my MB. Then I clicked on Advanced and in the list that appears, I started changing setting one at a time until I got to the link speed/connection mode setting, which I changed from from 100 MBS to 10 MBS half duplex. This sped up my connection a lot and it seems to be faster than it has ever been, but I do not understand why I have to set my 100 MBS connection to 10 MBS to get a faster connection. Before I did this, I deleted the network connection and restarted the machine to see if it would rebuild the connection itself but nothing like that worked.

    • in reply to: OUCH!!! Need to upgrade SP2 to SP3 #1252808

You cannot use that link directly in my tests. You have to go to this page , follow the link for your region (North America) under “order the cd”, and click through. That allows a validation process to occur. The landing page is your link, but it cannot be accessed without going through the information page in my link here. Thanks for the lead, though!

The total cost with shipping and local sales tax (where applicable) is about US$12.00, all things included. I like to run my upgrades locally, so this is how I did it, running locally from a certified Microsoft CD.

I ordered the SP3 CD Directly from MS and they shipped it for free… I have no idea why.

Don’t forget to try System File Checker before you reinstall. If it shows anything to be changed use the restore to earlier version option to see if this will do anything. There should also be a log file in this same area that shows any changes that have been made recently.

      Start/
      Programs/
      Accessories/
      Under System Tools,
      Click on System Information
      At Top click Tools
in Drop down Box click System File Checker

Before you run it, at the bottom of the page, under Settings, check the box to “Find Changes”, then click “Advanced” and there should be a “View Log” button where you should be able to see any changes that have been made recentlylmade in the log file.

      .
I reccommend going with XP Pro, if for no other reason for the restore feature, it has saved the day for me many times, I would not use Windows 98 again since using XP Pro.

      Hope that helps some

You never know what will fix something like that. I was having a problem with System Restore, but updating a driver for something on the motherboard fixed the problem…

You don’t use a Logitec Mouse and their newest driver do you? There is a problem with Windows XP coming out of standby with a USB connection to a Logitec Mouse. Plug it into a PS2 port and see if that helps, or there is a fix at logitec’s website to change a setting in the BIOS.

When I iuninstalled Acrobat (V5) then nstalled the new Acrobat Reader (V6), and started to have trouble with it, i went into the Adobe folder and found both Acrobat Reader (V5)and Adobe Reader (V6) were in the same folder. I uninstalled both and reinstalled the regular Acrobat Reader (V5), which fixed mine. I did not try to install the reader v6 again.

Not to try to confuse things, but I think the latest version of Acrobat reader (v6) is called the Adobe Reader, when I downloaded it i did not see “Acrobat” anywhere in the name.
