      useful,

Interesting thread….. it’s really tedious inserting a picture and re-sizing it, or new slide > layout, so I can understand your need to ‘try the macro’ thing.

I find Steve R’s…. page on how to use this vba/macro stuff in powerpoint really useful…

How do I use VBA code in PowerPoint?

      Cheers

Fellow ppt mvp Glenna Shaw has it all mapped out here….

August 23, 2005 at 9:29 am in reply to: Save Chart as GIF (Powerpoint 97 SR2) #968157

      Chuck,

How very weird! On my tests saving any thing (pies / text etc) from powerpoint 97, as “filetype” gif, produces a file called
filename.PG, (that’s Pee Gee Comma) as the extension.

The file is really a JPG and not a GIF.

I don’t know what the answer is. I cannot find any mention of this problem on microsoft.com (as per usual).

My guess, is that it’s something to do with Service Release 2, or another MS security patch….as I’m pretty sure it used to work just fine on ppt 97.

My tests all worked on ppt 2003

      egghead,

This looks like a problem with your “graphics card” drivers. Probably best to update them to the latest version for your particular graphics card (e.g. ati / nvidia) and version of windows/osx

August 2, 2005 at 8:46 pm in reply to: Including x-bar symbol (XP) #964077

      Ronny,

There is an option in powerpoint to “embed” fonts. It’s normally mentioned in powerpoint when you do a
      File menu > Save As…..

However, some fonts have restrictions stopping them from being embedded.

To learn everything there is to know about including the fonts with your presentation… see Embedding fonts http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00076.htm%5B/url%5D

August 2, 2005 at 7:56 am in reply to: Including x-bar symbol (XP) #963951

      Ronny,

OK – This is all new to me. The x-bar symbol is exactly what it says on the tin. An X with a ‘bar’ along the top edge.

A quick search through fonts already installed on my PC reveals that the x-bar character is in a font called

      MS Reference 1

The MS is a clue that the font is from microsoft.
A search on google reveals that fonts comes with Encarta.
      This page confirms that: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/…uct.aspx?PID=73%5B/url%5D

My PC came installed with Encarta Encyclopedia standard edition 2005. So that’s probably why the font is installed on my PC.

Revealed on the same google search is this page http://www.has.vcu.edu/che/Vallarino/font_install.htm%5B/url%5D

Entering a regular lower case x in powerpoint using the MS reference 1 fonts results in the X-bar character.

      Jerome,

I’ve not heard of such a utility. What I have seen in the past, is “font editing” software, that allows the opening of fonts (e.g. in postscript format), and the saving in another format (e.g. truetype). As you probably know most truetype fonts can be embedded in powerpoint files.

You will of course have to refer to your font license for your postscript fonts to see if this is allowed.

      Read more about embedding fonts

      AlanChris,

PowerPoint can be a bit fussy on play sounds and videos.

What version of powerpoint are you using? (not to be confused with the version of windows). See help menu > about.

How are you inserting the sounds into powerpoint? The preferred method is “insert menu > sounds > from file”.

      >I have recently recorded sounds as wavs and mp3s
What software did you use to do this, and what format did you save the sound? e.g. wav , stereo, 44khz, microsoft ADPCM etc

      April 13, 2005 at 8:17 am in reply to: Playing AVI’s (Powerpoint 2000) #940649

      sloucho84,

No need to convert the movie file to anything else. If you get these error messages when you try to drag and drop an AVI video clip. “Video not available, cannot find vids:mjpeg decompressor” or “Cannot display this type of sound or movie” or “MMSYSTEM006 There is no driver installed on your system”. Or if you “insert movie from file” and powerpoint simply ignores you. Then try this mjpg mpeg tip that is so simple I was gobsmacked/astounded.

Rename the file from a .AVI to .MPG – That’s it!
(even renaming the file to .QT .MOV .m1v works). We found that you tend to have a greater success rate with AVI files from digital cameras that create movies. We believe this is because most of them use the Motion jpeg codec or mjpeg for short.

March 17, 2005 at 9:40 am in reply to: VBA Coding in PPT (2003) #935341

      Ed,

Have you thought about using the “visible” technique in VBA?

You could have all the text objects on the slide, then by making them all invisible, until you click the relevant text box above, then make the correct text box visible for each whatever the user clicked (that triggers the macro).

      With ActivePresentation.SlideShowWindow.Presentation.Slides(“YourName”)
      .Shapes(“YourObjectName”).Visible = False

      With ActivePresentation.SlideShowWindow.Presentation.Slides(“YourName”)
      .Shapes(“YourObjectName”).Visible = True

      Cheers
