    • in reply to: Upgrading W97 to WXP (97—>>>XP (Yikes)) #609957

I have just gone from Windows 95 to a brand new machine with Windows XP and have found it to be relatively pain free although I wasn’t too keen on the colourful cartoonish look of the new start menu, control panel etc although it is easy to change to what they call “classic view” which looks more like you’ll be used to.

I used Office 2000 on both OS’s. I backed up all of my Word and Excel templates and they all transferred fine. In Outlook I had no problems exporting and importing Contacts etc but was cross with myself as I didn’t “map fields” for Calender items ans so have ended up not knowing what I am doing after 1st September.

The other thing that I was slightly put out by were the default “file associations” – all my jpegs and gifs automatically opened in some new thing called Windows Picture & Fax Viewer but that was easily rectified.

Hardware was a problem with items over 2 years old – my old scanner manufacturer is now defunct so new new drivers were available and my Compact Flash card reader was just too old so that had to be replaced. Good old Epson had XP drivers for my 2 year old printer which were easy to download and install and keyboards and mice were recognised with no prompting.

On the whole and after about 1 month and I happy with XP

    • in reply to: WHEN was master documents fixed? (U Tell Me) #608389

My first ever post to this lounge was “What has happened to the sub documents in my master document?” Oh boy did I get some responses! Having used WordPerfects Master/Sub for years with no problems I hadn’t anticipated any probs when I switched to Word. The things it did to my sections and styles were unspeakable and once bitten never ever again. If it does work in XP it would be a massive nudge towards upgrading from 2000 but could we trust it?

    • I think that you should take the plunge and you will be pleasantly surprised. I am running Publisher 2000 on Windows XP with no problems. I am still using Office 2000 including FrontPage but Pub 2000 should be fine even with the rest of Office being XP especially if you let it install itself in the default location of Windows choosing. Let us know how you get on.

      Thanks that worked a treat!

    • in reply to: Auto-text transfer? (2000/XP) #603054

This was of some interest to me as I am just about to transfer to a new machine from a box with Windows 95 and 10GB to a new one with Windows XP and 80GB but I am sticking with Office 2000 til I have got used to things. The page refered to for the Save My Settings Wizard has changed (to http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/2000/o2ksmsdd.aspx )
It downloaded fine and all appeared well until I had to type in my email address and a password. An error message informed my that I had typed my email address incorrectly (I hadn’t) over on the KB MS acknowledge that this is a problem caused by having a dash in my email address and it’s resolution/workaround to this is to enter an email address without a dash!! Not hugely helpful as all my mail comes to my hill-cross domain!
      Don’t you just love ’em

    • in reply to: Mail Merge (2000) #595445

I often run merges from Word using Access 2K databases as the data source and have always had the best results by running a query in Access and using the query as the data source rather than the table. Might be worth a try in this case.

    • in reply to: Mail Merge with Access Data Source (Office 2000 SR1) #590850

Thanks to you both. It was one of those end of day things where I had a nagging feeling that I wasn’t tackling things in the most efficient way but couldn’t take time to stop and think about it before I got it out of the way. Word talking to me about SQL is guaranteed to cause panic!

You need to download Woodys WOPR placebar customiser which works a treat and will allow up to 10 locations to show at once. There are other ways to do it but they involve delving into the registry.

    • in reply to: Booklet (97, 2000) #578044

      Hi
Word 2000 does this pretty well. In File Page Setup in Paper Size choose landscape and in Margins tick “2 pages per sheet”

    • in reply to: Outline Numbering in Table (2000 SR1) #576434

Thanks to both of you for sound ideas.

Checking the table properties as sugested got the table breaking more reasonably and I did create the style to match up the alignment problem caused by “space before”.

The good news is that the numbering for once behaved perfectly!

      Many thanks as always

    • in reply to: pdf file format (2000) #574952

      Hi

If you just want to do this occasionally for a few documents you can actually have it done for free via the adobe website http://www.createpdf.adobe.com but obviously they want you to buy the software if you intend to do mass conversions.
I have used it for both Word and Publisher documents and have been very impressed.

      Hi

I have used the site http://www.abebooks.com to find out of print cookbooks and they have a copy of Woodys Word 97 Annoyances for $19.95 plus postage.

Hope you get it – the O’Reilly Annoyances books are a favourite of mine.

    • in reply to: Templates in W97 going to W2K (2000/SR1) #570332

      Hi Leigh

Like Leanne we had no problems at all with our templates sucessfully migrating from Word 97 to 2000 despite the fact that we installed 2000 to a different drive than that which 97 had been on.
Fortunately all our styles survived remarkably intact – in fact it was probably the most problem free upgrade we have ever had.

Take a deep breath and do it – you won’t regret it.

      Hi

In Word 2000 going to Tools Customise Options and uncheck “Menus show recently used commands first” should do the trick.
