Help – I am not sure but sympathy by the bucketload. How big is the file – I only use Publisher for flyers etc and a simple two page file with about 4 small jpegs inserted is over 15,000KB! Have you tried printing pages 1-20 21-40 etc? Otherwise would it be possible to convert the file to a .pdf – I have reduced a 5000kb .pub to a 125kb .pdf.

    • in reply to: Need Sponge Cake Recipe #644274

This recipe may be a little different to your mothers but it is quick, easy, tasty and it works.

Grease and line the base of a 7inch cake tin.

Whisk the yolks of 3 eggs with 4oz castor sugar and juice of a lemon (hand whisk is fine but hand held electric is much quicker). Stir in grated rind of lemon, 1/2 oz ground almonds and 2oz semolina. In a clean bowl whisk the 3 egg whites til in peaks and fold them into the cake mix carefully with a metal spoon trying to keep as much of the air in whilst ensuring that all is evenly blended. Pour the mixture into the cake tin a nd bake in a preheated oven at Gas 4 350 farenheit 180 celsius (or 160 fan oven) for about 40 -50 minutes. it is ready when it is springy in the centre. Cool and then split in half and snadwich two halves together with lemon curd and whipped cream.
BTW if you have no semolina to hand then I see no reason why cornmeal or even plain flour shouldn’t work.
Go for it – I’m sure she’ll be thrilled at such enterprise and kindness.
      Regards

      Joe & Al

All sorted – it only took a proper reboot but I was lacking time and patience this morning. Safely restored and locked so she can’t move it again – there are times when I wish MS did a XP “Seniors” line so my users couldn’t keep doing these things.

      Thanks guys

      Thanks Al

I am not on site at the moment – there is no internet access on the machine in question so I have excaped home for for lunch – as it happens I only did a restart so this pm I will do a full shutdown and report back if I am still unable to move the darned thing.

      Many thanks

Slightly bizarre – are they made of real food or some sort of modelling medium?

    • in reply to: Headers and Footers (2000) #631503

When you go to View Header and Footer there is an icon for Page Set Up where on the Layout Tab you can turn on “Different First Page” in the headers and footers section.

    • in reply to: Scanned photos – how to review them (Windows ME) #631381

      Hi

I am not familiar with the particular graphic software you have but lots have a “Browse” facility – in PaintshopPro it is in the File menu, which allows you to see thumbnails of all of the photos in a particular folder as well as printing out a contact sheet so look out for something like that in your PhotoExp.

Having moved from Windows 95 directly to Windows XP I have no experience of Windows ME but I have been most impressed by the way that XP handles photos. In Windows Explorer there are options that would allow you to view the contents of the CD as Thumbnails or a FilmStrip.

    • in reply to: England and Pubs #621105

First of all the caveats – it is depressingly easy to eat appallingly in English pubs – many are part of chains and have very similar centralised, plasticised menus offering chicken terryaki, thai spiced prawns, lasagne etc etc. They can be found all over the country London included and pop up with alarming frequency around tourist spots especially.

However there are some great places that offer genuinely home cooked food in pleasant surroundings. If you are around central London SW1 (Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square etc) then the following may be of interest:

Ebury St Wine Bar – good wine list, good bar meals, friendly staff and locals and a good more expensive restaurant for treats
Grenadier, Wilton Row – good beer, very English, quirky, OK food
Nags Head, Kinnerton Street – genuinely friendly, decent food
Orange Brewery, Pimlico Road – Home brew at its best, friendly atmosphere, opposite very popular Saturday morning Farmers market

In the City (St Pauls Cathederal, Stock Exchange etc) try
The Black Friar – Queen Victoria Street – fabulous Edwardian art nouveau decor and bags of atmosphere
The Eagle, Farringdon Road – some of the best pub food in town at very reasonable prices
The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street – Converted from an old banking hall fabulous architectural features and decent food
Olde Cheshire Cheese, off Fleet Street – 17th century and a bit touristy but worth a visit if you are nearby

Also there is a fabulous farmers market held every Friday and Saturday in Borough Market (London Bridge Tube) which is well worth a visit for proper food being sold by its producers, most offer lunchtime snacks – try the fabulous Chorizo and Rocket in a Roll from Brindisa, fresh hand dived scallops with garlic & lemon, venison burgers, home produced sausages & bacon all for about $5. Well worth a visit

Thank you so much – needless to say it works a treat. ISBLANK and ISTEXT will both be useful in IF formulae

    • in reply to: HAGGIS!! #618114

I agree that Haggis is wonderful – how come a country that exports such abysmal food can declare haggis unfit for human consumption is beyond me!

Neeps must be made with swede (the yellow turnip) and nutmeg added to this with the salt, pepper and butter is delicious.

However I am agahst at your suggestion of serving it with beef gravy – what do you think the Scots invented whisky for?

      Oh imitation Marmite

    • in reply to: Re: Tired of Twinkies and Jolt? #614264

Fat free – can’t be all bad then.

I am always amused by the No Calorie and Caffine free versions here – I mean what is in them that anybody would willingly want to ingest?

    • in reply to: Re: Tired of Twinkies and Jolt? #614057

The Jolt site made me feel like I had a hangover with none of the fun!

      Twinkies any better?

    • in reply to: lsass.exe (XP Home) #612118

      Thanks Joe

I was unable to get into Safe Mode and even tried the new (to me) Last Known Good Configuration option which would have been super if only it worked. Being the sole user of a standalone machine I find this whole obsession with passwords crazy.

I think I can get hold of an XPH disc and will try Recovery Console. Unfortunately I don’t think I can justify the time or expense of password recovery programs. I am just grateful that I had kept my old box with W95 so at least I can keep up with my mail and seek help from the lounge.

      Many thanks

    • in reply to: Upgrading W97 to WXP (97—>>>XP (Yikes)) #610787

I was working when it was bugging me so I got round it by opening the files from within the application that I wanted to use. However it appears to be fairly similar – open My Computer – navigate to a jpeg, gif whatever and right click open with then browse to Fireworks, Photoshop etc and check the “Always open files of this type with this program” Box

What I find annoying is that I can’t imagine why anyone would want to open say a .png with the viewer but I suppose it is an improvement on some of Microsofts previous image/graphics attempts!
