There’s no need to switch to VMWare Player, VirtualBox can easily do what you want.

You said “I named the folder on the host, and gave rights to everyone to read the folder, but I’m not seeing it on the VM’s list.” However, the shared folders are actually setup from within the VM, you didn’t mention what you did there. Did you open the “Shared folder settings…” option from the Devices menu in VirtualBox? On the Shared Folders dialog, did you click on the little icon of the file folder with a “+” on it? Once you click on that, you should be able to navigate thru the local folders on the host machine or even shares on the network and select one to share.

Once you have a folder shared, in the VM it will show up under “Network places” as “Vboxsvr[your share name] on Vboxsvr”. So, if you named your share as “MyShare” it would show as “VboxsvrMyShare on Vboxsvr”. What I do then is use the “Map a network drive” option to assign a drive letter to that share so it appears in Windows Explorer as a drive.

I have a netbook with an ssd in it that I recently powered on after it had been sitting for 5 months without power. It powered right up and worked fine with no issues. I can’t say that I verified that every single bit on it was still intact, but I’m reasonably confident that it didn’t lose any data. My experience doesn’t disprove or prove the validity of the article but does show that YMMV.

First step is to join the Windows Insider Program to gain access to the Win 10 Preview downloads: https://insider.windows.com/

I think that if anyone could come up with a definite answer to the OP’s question, they could become rich. I’m sure many companies would pay for software or hardware that could accurately predict the life of a drive.

The ISO is not downloaded to your machine but there is an ESD file that can be converted to an ISO. Here’s a link to a tutorial on how to convert the ESD to an ISO: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2570-esd-iso-create-bootable-iso-windows-10-esd-file.html

    • in reply to: Tablet question #1498773

The recommendation of the Kindle Fire HD by RetiredGeek is a good one. An Amazon tablet will certainly meet the needs of someone who simply wants to use email and social media.

The main drawback to the Amazon tablets is that they do not have access to Google Play app store but are restricted to using the Amazon app store. The Amazon app store has a good selection of apps but pales in comparison to Google Play app store. At first this isn’t a problem but as you wife becomes a more sophisticated user it could become a limitation.

My first tablet was a Kindle Fire tablet but I quickly outgrew it and now have a Nexus 7 Android tablet as well as a Surface Pro 3 Windows tablet.

Glad it worked for you but at the same time I’m surprised it worked since I would have expected that Windows would need to install the phone’s driver in order to make the tethering work.

Edit: OK, I see you connected via wifi and not USB. That makes sense then.

    • in reply to: Need suggestions for a new email account #1498144

I have my own domain and even have an email address of mail@mydomainname.net. However, I don’t use that email address because I still prefer using my hotmail account. I have archived emails in my hotmail account dated as far back as 1998. It’s definitely not necessary to own a domain to be able to have an email addy that you own forever.

    • in reply to: Need suggestions for a new email account #1498109

I started using hotmail.com (now outlook.com) back in the 1990’s and it works for me. I also have gmail and yahoo accounts but don’t use them as I prefer outlook. I mostly use Windows Live Mail as my email client but like the ability to access my hotmail account from any device with a browser.

    • Pam,

The easiest way would be to open two copies of Windows/File Explorer.

[*]Open the first copy by clicking on the folder icon in the task bar.
[*]Open the second copy by holding shift when clicking on the same icon (as you’ll now have two) in your task bar.
[*]Size each to half of your monitor (Click on one Hold Down the Windows Key and press the left arrow key. Then Click on the other and do the same but with the right arrow key.)
[*]In the Right hand copy navigate to your external drive in the left pane of Explorer.
[*]In the left hand copy of Explorer and drag and drop your pictures folder on the External drive in the Navigation pane of the right hand copy of Explorer.
[*]Now just wait for the copy to complete.
        [*]Repeat for the Videos folder.

      HTH

This method will work and it sounds as if it did work for the OP but I disagree that it is the easiest way. The easiest way would be to right-click on the Pictures folder on the C: drive within Windows/File Explorer and select “Copy” then navigate to the root of the external drive, right-click and select “Paste”. Opening 2 copies of Windows/File Explorer may make things easier to visualize but makes the actual process much more complicated than it actually is.

It sounds to me that you didn’t make contact with the actual AVAST tech support. Here’s the link to the AVAST support page. https://www.avast.com/en-us/support . Is that the number you called?

I guess I never made a mistake in File Explorer before since I never looked for an Undo button! It might come in handy someday so I went ahead and added it to the Toolbar. Thanks to pdfero for pointing out what was missing and BruceR for how to add it.

    • in reply to: Deal on 5TB USB 3.0 HDD #1496193

$129 for a 5TB is a great deal, can’t even buy a bare 5TB drive for that price.

    • The capability to mount an ISO by double-clicking it is a new feature of Win 8.x (it’s also present in Win 10). In previous versions of Windows a 3rd party utility like DaemonTools, PowerISO or VirtualCloneDrive was required.

As the OP discovered, you right-click and select “eject” to dismount it.
