Dilbert is almost always funny, but I particularly like today’s offering.

    • in reply to: Turn off tracked changes (For Ever) – Word 2003 #1205114

It would be very easy to write a Macro that would automatically accept all tracked changes whenever you open any document. Something like the following in a DocumentOpen event.

      Code:
          With ActiveDocument
              If .Revisions.Count > 0 Then
                  .AcceptAllRevisions
              End If
          End With

I cannot imagine wanting to do this, but I guess it takes all kinds.

      Thanks Stuart

I will try and implement this now. The reason that I want to do it is that I have to distribute documents of about 16 pages to 5 International and 3 national sites (only 1 document to any one site as a rule). If they use tracked changes it comes back to me with dotted lines, different colours and boxes all over the place and it is difficult for me to then do any meaningful work as the pagination and formatting seem to be all over the place. As I have the originals and I know what I put in them I can easily see what has changed.

Has this behavior been happening for a long time, or did it just recently start happening?
According to the screenshot, you do have two third-party add-ins running. Did you recently install either of these, and did this new behavior coincide with installing either of these?
Also according to the screenshot, you’ve got two instances of WordWinCalendar running – not exactly sure how that happened, but I’d expect that to cause some kind of flaky behavior – you should only have one instance running.

Can you try temporarily uninstalling or unloading these add-ins, and see if the behavior goes away? – I’m betting on it being caused by one of these.

      Hi Gary

Thanks for the response. As far as I know those add ins have always been there as I have never used the VBA in Word only in Excel and I have not downloaded any new (only updates to ASAP) add ins for at least a year. I unloaded all and bingo you were right. When I go back to the office on Monday I will experiment by re-adding them and see what happens.

      Hi Sam

Thanks for the insight, I think though that the example is a bit simplistic. If I wanted to know which computer, Apple or Windows, was best I could Google it and find a whole bunch of technical and geeky info but posting the same question here will produce many replies from ‘lay people’ and like users and the thread will probably eventually disolve into puns, laughs and jokes based on comments received. I don’t Wiki, Face blog, twatter or any of that old malarky but enjoy the banter and honest answers here. Then I Google to check if they were telling the truth 🙂

      Hi Don

“Slinky has slunk away” what a sad way for a legend of the lounge to go. I would have liked to have thanked him more for all of the invaluable help and advice he has provided to me over the years

    • in reply to: Find merged cells #1204629

Never mind…found a VBA solution! Phew.

I inherited a huge spreadsheet (16K rows and about 20 cols) that I need to sort by last name.

The sort option tells me that merged cells have to be identically sized. I didn’t think there were any merged cells (certainly weren’t supposed to be).
Is there any way other than brute force looking through this huge sheet to find what the sort option thinks are merged cells?

      Thanks.

      Good morning

it seems to be my ASAP recommendation morning, I promise I am not on commission (it’s free any way). If you load this add in select the whole workbook and then select option 11. format there is an option to unmerge all cells. I find this really useful when I receive CSV reports from some bespoke software at work because it will also delete leading and trailing spaces etc.

    • in reply to: Batch Change Password Protected Excel Worksheets #1204628

Yes Catharine, that is exactly what I want to do and they are all in the same folder fortunately although the passwords can be one of two different PWs.

      Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

      Hi Leigh

The much lauded free ASAP UTILITIES has a facility to batch change passwords in one WB, running it twice with each password shuld do it. As for multiple WB’s I have no idea but perhaps you could look contact the author as he answers questions on his web blog.

      Good morning

Whenever my work PC goes into screensave mode the Word VB window has opened itself when I log back in. Any ideas why please? There are no modules, macros etc. in the VB Window it just seems to be empty and the other projects mentioned are unviewable and I therefore assume are system VB projects. There are also no toolbars available.
