I think I fixed it. I went into the BIOS settings and changed something regarding booting (I forget) and this time it booted correctly. So it must have been “something” I did.

      Thanks for trying to help.

I would lay odds that it is dust inside on/in the wheel. They are easy to clean. If it’s not dust inside, they are also cheap to replace.

That’s what I was going to say. I’d get a can of air-spray and clean out the inside of the mouse.

I read no mention of Linux. I understand Ubuntu is aiming at the tablet/phone with a phone being able to dock and become a full strength operating system. I’m looking forward to that idea. I just hope they hurry as I’m already 75. 😮

    • I am a virtual novice at designing a database that has had a devil of a time trying to find any sort of learning aids, books, or courses that will help me to learn how to design a database. What I have found is primarily focused on very simple databases and the basics of Access 2007 functions like tables, queries, etc. My preference is to do the database in Access 2007 as that is what my company has though I personally am not hard and fast locked into it. I would appreciate anyone’s recommendations on this. Thanks.

I want to add that what gives me the most trouble is what logic to use when it comes to arranging links/relationships between different data tables. I do realize that may very well be dependent on the specifics of the database I am trying to design. What I am hoping for is to see how other databases are designed and use/adapt the logic to what I want to do.

When I was in your position I found the best book was “Database Design for Mere Mortals” by, Hernandez. I actually took a class by him before he published his first book. It made the world of difference for me.

This is why I won’t buy any computer that has a Broadcom chip. Just too much trouble to get it working.

    • in reply to: Recommend PDF reader? #1457120

Are you downloading Adobe in Firefox as I always get that option when upgrading Flashplayer, Shockwave or Reader for that browser – in IE it pushes Google Chrome but unchecking the box gets you out of it.

I was using Adobe Reader until I learned about Foxit but one of my online utility bills will only work in Reader so I dumped Foxit (even though it’s supposed to be able to read all PDFs) and reverted to Reader.

I had the same problem. I think it was encrypted was the reason. Haven’t had that happen for a long time now so I don’t remember the exact circumstance.

From what you describe, I would guess it to be the Hard Drive you hear. I would buy Spinrite (https://www.grc.com/intro.htm) and run that on the drive.

    • in reply to: Need a pop-up ad blocker #1455483

moon: I’m using Emsisoft as my anti-virus and it has a feature that allows you to block sites. When I get a pop-up I ad its URL address into the Emsisoft Host Rules and select the “Hide Silently” option and I never see that pop-up again. I’m not sure if other anti-virus programs have that feature or not, but you might want to check.

    • in reply to: Problem accessing shared resources on network #1437741

prompts me for user name and password to log into my desktop pc [windows xp], my user name and password are not recognised. I guess my user name is not recognised. I use ‘Administrator’ as user name to log into my desktop pc [windos xp], so I type in the required field ‘Administrator’: should I type in anything different? Am I wrong with the domain or else?

I know nothing of what I’m talking about, but just let me throw out this idea. Perhaps the name “Administrator” is a “reserved” word and can’t be used in that context.

    • in reply to: Problem with Seagate 3TB Backup Plus #1430217

I didn’t bother with the software pre-installed, I just used the drive as a spare drive and backing up with my 3rd party software. Works fine.

    • in reply to: Macrium Reflect Standard problems #1393501

I installed Macrium on my Win7 machine and when I did it made a boot entry whereupon booting my computer I am given a choice to boot into Macrium or boot into Windows. If I am going to run a backup I always boot into Macrium or use the Rescue boot disk. I never run Macrium from Windows. The reason for that is I don’t have any problems that way.

I’d try creating a new USB with Kaspersky from that laptop and trying again.

      Bruce,

Thanks, I didn’t know about the inner workings of WDO only that it worked pretty well until I came up against the FBI virus on my cousins machine. It said it had killed it but must have missed something because it came right back. Only failure I’ve had with it.

BTW: MS Updates the WDO engine and you have to refresh your media to get those updates to the best of my knowledge. I remember when I used to run it from a CD-R disk and it would complain about not being able to update so I switched to the USB version and darned, if I remember correctly, I got that same message another time after that…and yes I was connected to the internet when those happened just routing usage not any infections known. 😆

Two things: The flashdrive will not be updated with new definitions as it cannot be written to at that point. It is best to recreate the bootable flashdrive or CD on a non-infected machine just before running it on an infected machine. When it is recreated the definitions will be updated and you don’t need to be online. The other thing (FBI virus), I booted from WDO and made a note of the files it said were part of the FBI virus. I then booted with UBUNTU live. Once there I went to the files identified earlier. I discovered them all in a nice little folder on the hardrive. I deleted the folder – bingo – virus gone. Actually since I had never done this before I just renamed the folder first and rebooted with Windows to see if that worked. It did, so then I deleted the FBI folder.

There is at least one web site, the Grant County Map Server that requires Silverlight to access it. I found out one day when I tried to access that same site while running Ubuntu. I have found that the web site error message will inform you that you need Silverlight to access it. I can’t believe the taxpayers got stuck with a proprietary system, but hey, it’s government. What else can you expect?

    • in reply to: Can’t copy MDB file #1321474

An MDB file is a MS Access file so you need to run Access and then open it from within Access. If you copy the MDB files from one computer to another Access will be looking in the wrong place for the file. While I used Access all the time when I was working since I’ve retired I haven’t used it and don’t have it on my computer anymore so I can’t tell you where you set that option. It may be in an options or settings menu or the table manager which someone else mentioned. I used to do that all the time. Sorry I can’t be more explicit.
