AskWoody LoungerMany thanks people for the advice so far. I visited the links and there was good information too. However the atumatic polling – whilst not so frequent – still occurs every 15mins. I have turned everything off in msconfig; only (as far as I am aware) my non-webbed accounting prograqmme is running… h e l p please!

AskWoody LoungerI’ve just installed – 2 days ago – a free spam filter from cloudmark. So far it has installed and run exceptionally well… it’s based upon a database of (un)known spammers. You tell the prog. that this message is spam (click on the icon) and you never get bothered again!

AskWoody LoungerI don’t know if this reply helps or clouds the issue…. I have a Main account with my ISP and subsidiary mail accounts for my employees. I log on and retrieve only my mail. Staff log-on and retrive just theirs. So what I am suggesting is that should there be separate mail accounts at the ISP side and separated Users on the Pc?

AskWoody LoungerWas the netbui installed only to the Xp machine = I have the same problem

AskWoody LoungerFYI I have now just installed a programme called pdffactory. I found this on a PC Pro magazine cover disk, and went to their web site to d/l the XP version. Having tried it now for three days I registered the product ($49.95). It is especially usefull for creating multipage scans in pdf format and I can scan straight to the pdf printer, and then store to HDD. The was I use it means that I no longer have to rely on tifs (the lamented Kodak Imaging) and find that the pdf format is a joy to email.

AskWoody LoungerThanks Leif. I hadn’t considered .pdf. On the face of it I have seen reviewer’s comments that state that multi-page documents can be outputted to .pdf. I suppose that there, then, would be something on the File menu, like export? I’ve never used pdf, apart from their reader.

WSStephenElms
AskWoody LoungerOk, many thanks – tried the File/Exit – your advice was excellent and spot on.

AskWoody LoungerThanks for the comments, to explain further – this programme uses a proprietary format, holding a number of individual documents in one file. It is the selection of 1 of these documents that I want to “print”. It is easy to fax or print them, so I thought that I ought to be able to set up a “prinrter” – that I select from the Print command – to em the document.

AskWoody LoungerI know the feeling well, many moons ago I had the same problem with w3.1 and w95!. FYI I now use a not-too-costly programme call Backup+; it’s very useful and flexible. Have a look at http://www.avantrix.com/

AskWoody LoungerWe have decided upon PC Guardian $39.95 for our data. Had a look at load of progs. But this seem easiest to encrypt files AND folders with 1 password.

AskWoody LoungerYou have to ensure that, before the installation of XP that your installed software is Xp compatible. Sorry to be a pain to you about this. I have found, since the installation of WXPHe, that some of my Son’s games won’t work. These I didn’t check on (!) because my PC’s are primarily for business…. Therefore I should have done the same check on them (got the, or badgered for, updated drivers) that I did on my mc business software and hardware.
-
WSStephenElms
AskWoody LoungerYep, I’ve been having that problem too on both of my Pc’s. After a few re-starts or normal shutdowns it goes away until we load / re-load new software. Not a major prob. at all though, but it is irritating.

AskWoody LoungerOn my Pc2 WXpHE upgraded all oK from W98 – in fact it’s excellent. I left W98 on the HDD. Two comments: processor is AMD500 and HDD was upgraded before Windows up/g to a 20Gb.

AskWoody LoungerOn this subject of NU2002. I’ve just installed WXpHe and see that I now need to upgrade to NU2002. Anyone know if the Upgrade, rather than a new purchase of 2002, version is the upgrade to 2001 – which is what I’ve got?
