    • in reply to: Can’t see cell values (2000) #1147067

      Thanks for your help.
I put this up on the Test board first and when I opened it I still couldn’t see the numbers. After rebooting everything is fine but what is weird is that I have several versions of this sheet saved and the same cells were “blank” in all of them and they are all fine after rebooting.
These little boxes we use are just filled with magic.

      Thanks

    • in reply to: Hans may not read this (all) #1133168

Several years ago I was a labourer working at a small manufacturing facility when I was in the right place at the right time and overheard a manager wanting a report that the computer program they were using didn’t supply. I had a good understanding of Excel and other applications although I didn’t have a degree I could flaunt to get a good computer related job. I volunteered to look after creating a spreadsheet. After some successes I was given more and more complex reports to complete until I was in over my head.
This is when I discovered the Lounge and Hans. I had never heard of macros or “Get External Date” but over the next several months Hans patiently walked me through the learning curve. (There were others, of course, who were of immense help and I don’t mean to diminish their contributions, but it always seemed that Hans was the first to answer and it was always the right answer.) This eventually led to my promotion to Network Administrator.
After this company went out of business I was able to secure a similar job by showing them the different things I had done even though their “Help Wanted” ad specifically called for a college degree. I am now working for a large company making a lot more money then I was as a labourer, doing what I love to do.
I cannot imagine myself being here without the existence of this Lounge and in particular the patience and easy to follow lessons by Hans.
Hans, I cannot express my gratitude and appreciation for all of the help you have given me.
Thank You Hans and thanks all the other folks who take the time to share your knowledge.

    • in reply to: Result from Lookup shows formula (2000) #1113628

Eureka! When I first got stuck I tried changing formats but I didn’t re-enter the formula, when I pressed the F2 then enter it worked like a charm.
Thank you not only for your solution (and your help too, Hans) but also for the quickness of your replies.

    • in reply to: Result from Lookup shows formula (2000) #1113611

Thanks for the quick reply. I have checked the options and the format and they are all set correctly.
While waiting for a reply I hit the edit formula button and when I clicked OK the cell changed to show the result but when I tried to duplicate this feat in another cell it didn’t work.
      Confusion comes easily to me.

Thank you for your quick reply, How do I check the settings for Windows Update?
BTW, in reply to the second response I received from Hans, my Automatic Live Update in Nortons is turned off.
      Thanks again for your help.

    • in reply to: Problem with XCOPY #923971

Thanks for your quick reply (you too, John)
Just so I understand, does the xcopy not make an exact copy of the drive so that when I take the D drive out and change it from slave to master and put it in another machine, it works just like the original C drive? If xcopy copies all the info, does it not copy the boot information as well?
I have since realized that the second drive was an 8-Gb, not 20 so I know Win 98 won’t recognize it (I don’t remember why) but I will try again with a 6 Gb. When I formatted the first one I just right clicked on it in my computer and chose format. Is that not correct?
Thanks again. I am always amazed at how much I learnin the Lounge!!

    • in reply to: Install problem #759871

      Thanks for your reply,
The instructions say for the software to be installed and during the install process it says to power on the printer and then connect the USB to the computer. But with the problem we’re having we never get to the point where it directs us to plug in the printer USB, the cd keeps running the setup.exe over and over again.

    • in reply to: printer disconnects (XP Home) #755954

Do you have any other USB devices connected? If so, disconnect them, uninstall and reinstall the printer and then reconnect the other devices. If there are no other devices check out your device manager and under Universal Serial Bus Controller (something like that) check to see if there is a Mass Storage Device listed under USB controller, if there is delete it and uninstall and reinstall the drivers.
If that fails you can check out HP.com, they have some troubleshooting steps there and also a toll free tech support phone number if you’re in warranty.

MS Query is an add in that is included with Excel. The Help menu in MS Query might be of some help. Also check out http://www.kx.com/technical/tutorials/excel/%5B/url%5D
